New York City FC beats Toronto FC 3-1 as Tomás Romero picks up second victory in three starts
New York City (9-7-4) moved into sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 31 points.
Wolf opened the scoring in the 20th minute with his team-leading ninth goal of the season. His side-volley shot went off the far post and redirected off the other post into the net for a 1-0 lead.
It was just the seventh first-half goal this season for NYCFC, which entered lowest in the league in that category.
Mitja Ilenic made it 2-0 in the 49th with his second goal of the season. Agustín Ojeda dribbled into the area for a cross that deflected off Ilenic inside the far post.
Toronto (4-11-5) cut its deficit to 2-1 in the 70th on an own goal. Theo Corbeanu got past his defender along the right sideline and got to the endline for a cross that went off defender Justin Haak and Romero's arm into the net.
But four minutes later, Kevin O'Toole scored his first goal since March 9, 2024 off a great pass by Wolf.
Toronto, which entered with just 25 goals allowed this season, was looking for its first road victory against New York City since September 2020.

Paul Goldschmidt regrets bad throw in 12-5 loss to Phillies, Yankees' 9th error in 4 games
NEW YORK (AP) — If Paul Goldschmidt could do it over again, he would run to first base in an attempt to retire Nick Castellanos instead of trying an off-balance throw to the plate in a bid to prevent Trea Turner from scoring the tying run. Not only did Goldschmidt's throw not get the second out of the seventh inning but the Gold Glove first baseman's miscue was the ninth error in four games for the Yankees, who committed two Friday night in a 12-5 loss to Philadelphia that dropped them 5 1/2 games back of AL East-leading Toronto. 'I was playing in and he hit a little bit to my right, a little soft and I knew going to be a bang-bang play at first and tried to get him at home,' said Goldschmidt, a four-time Gold Glove winner. 'Looking back, I should have just made the play and went to first base there. I think even if I put that throw perfect, Turner's probably still beating that out." With Turner on third and Kyle Schwarber on second, Castellanos hit a 42-foot grounder at 61.4 mph to Goldschmidt, who was playing in. At the edge of the grass, Goldschmidt moved to his right, made an off-balance throw and the ball sailed over catcher Austin Wells' glove as Turner scored the tying run, Schwarber took third and Castellanos second. 'Probably too aggressive of a play by me to try and make a play where they were going to be safe anyway and it led to another base runner rather than just getting the out at first," Goldschmidt said. "So that was a mistake.' It was Goldschmidt's third error this season and the Yankees' 54th. Two pitches later, Luke Weaver hung a changeup that J.T. Realmuto hit for a tiebreaking, three-run homer. 'You're Paul Goldschmidt and you trust that I'm going to throw the ball on line,' manager Aaron Boone said. 'Even if we don't have a play there, maybe something happens. The runner trips or something, so you're trying to make a play there.' Weaver allowed his fifth homer in 12 appearances since making a quick return from a hamstring injury on June 20. He allowed home runs in three straight outings July 1-4 and had four straight scoreless appearances before Friday. New York's relievers allowed 10 runs and has a 4.28 ERA, 23rd among the 30 teams. The Yankees have a 6.20 ERA in July, the worst mark in the major leagues. 'It's a challenge right now, but we've got to have guys step up,' Boone said New York is 3-6 following a five-game winning streak. The Yankees are 21-27 opening a seven-game AL East lead with a 35-20 start, committing 30 errors during the slide. 'We're in a good spot to make a run here,' said Austin Wells, who hit one of the Yankees' four solo homers. 'I think the tides are going to turn.' ___ AP MLB:

Sabrina Ionescu carries Liberty to win over Mercury
NEW YORK — We finally got the Liberty and Mercury going at each other pretty close to full strength. And at the start, it looked like it was going to be a great one. Both teams had all of their starpower and key contributors — except for New York's Nyara Sabally — as a see-saw battle went into the fourth quarter undecided. But Sabrina Ionescu and the Liberty shined the brightest in an 89-76 win. Phoenix's Alyssa Thomas and Kahleah Copper had their way early at Barclays Center, with Copper converting on contested shot attempts and Thomas playing bully ball. Ionescu couldn't trade buckets with them, scoring just three points in the first quarter as the Mercury star duo totaled 17. But Ionescu regrouped and scored 26 in the final three quarters to send the Mercury home with a loss. She finished with one of her best stat lines of the season: 29 points, eight assists, five rebounds, one block and one steal. It was her night. She signaled that with just over seven minutes in the fourth after converting an and-1 layup on Monique Akoa Makani. And on the next possession, she put her team up 15 with another layup after weaving through Phoenix's defense. After a Mercury bucket, Leonie Fiebich essentially scored the dagger — a 24-footer that put the Liberty up 16 at the 5:43 mark. The ending looked completely different from the start when the Libs were held scoreless for over three minutes to start the matchup. Jonquel Jones dragged her team back, though, with nine points in the period to keep the deficit within four. Before Ionescu exploded, it was Jones looking like the No. 1 option. She was on double-double watch before halftime and eventually finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Thomas finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists and two steals. Copper contributed 14 points and three rebounds. The teams traded blows, and the Liberty eventually trailed by 12 in the period. Coach Sandy Brondello's team responded with a 17-7 run in the final minutes, headlined by nine Ionescu points. Just like that, the game was tied at 46 going into halftime. It was a game the Liberty should've been losing big. By halftime, the Liberty were shooting 34.2% to Phoenix's 48.6%. The Liberty's third quarter began sloppily and slowly. The Mercury — again led by Copper — got off to an 8-3 start. But that's where having the luxury of two MVPs and three All-Star players comes in handy. A fourth All-Star — Emma Meesseman — is awaiting a visa and will be in New York shortly. A quick three-minute, 11-3 run flipped the game once again. Breanna Stewart's layup at the 2:19 mark put her team up three and forced Mercury head coach Nate Tibbetts to call timeout. Ionescu's barrage continued with a 25-foot trey after Kennedy Burke's block on Satou Sabally. Then Jones — in the corner in front of the Mercury bench — banked in a buzzer-beater that was upheld after an official review to end the third. It put the Libs up eight entering the fourth. The Sabrina Show continued from there — this time with four assists as the Mercury's comeback attempt fell short. The road team trailed by as many as 18 points before cutting it to 10. Finally, the Liberty could exhale after dropping the first two games of the season against the Mercury. Not enough time was left and the Liberty put them in too deep of a hole Friday night. And there was mainly one player to blame for that — No. 20, Sabrina Ionescu.
