New York City FC beats Toronto FC 3-1 as Tomás Romero picks up second victory in three starts

CBS News04-07-2025
Hannes Wolf had a goal and an assist, Tomás Romero picked up his second victory in three starts and New York City FC beat Toronto FC 3-1 on Thursday night.
New York City (9-7-4) moved into sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 31 points.
Wolf opened the scoring in the 20th minute with his team-leading ninth goal of the season. His side-volley shot went off the far post and redirected off the other post into the net for a 1-0 lead.
It was just the seventh first-half goal this season for NYCFC, which entered lowest in the league in that category.
Mitja Ilenic made it 2-0 in the 49th with his second goal of the season. Agustín Ojeda dribbled into the area for a cross that deflected off Ilenic inside the far post.
Toronto (4-11-5) cut its deficit to 2-1 in the 70th on an own goal. Theo Corbeanu got past his defender along the right sideline and got to the endline for a cross that went off defender Justin Haak and Romero's arm into the net.
But four minutes later, Kevin O'Toole scored his first goal since March 9, 2024 off a great pass by Wolf.
Toronto, which entered with just 25 goals allowed this season, was looking for its first road victory against New York City since September 2020.

Zach Lowe responds to Nets' Cam Thomas over 'consensus' spat

Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas recently made headlines after addressing The Ringer's Zach Lowe over comments Lowe made in a recent episode of "The Zach Lowe Show" podcast. Lowe was pointing out what the consensus is on Thomas and his game, prompting Thomas to respond by dismissing the criticism. Once the dust settled, Lowe took the time to address the situation. "If Cam Thomas had listened to the subsequent 12 minutes, I don't think he did, but I don't know. He would have heard me deep-dive into his game and talk about career-high assists," Lowe said to colleague Rob Mahoney. While Thomas was within his right to address any criticism of him or his game, Lowe also spoke about Thomas for much longer than what was put on social media to provide context around the conversation. "Certain kind of passes that he's gotten meaningfully better at: Nick Claxton lobs, little dump-offs, and stuff like that," Lowe continued. "I have said consistently for two years of Cam Thomas dialogue that the guy can straight up get buckets and there is a place for him in the NBA. To me, that place is most likely sixth-man scoring burst guy, which is what I said in that 12-minute segment." As part of Lowe's discussion of Thomas, the former ESPN NBA commentator mentioned that Thomas is one of the most polarizing players in the NBA and how social media reacted to Lowe's comments proved that once again. Thomas, 23, is coming off the best season of his four-year career as he averaged 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game while shooting 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point land. Thomas is currently a restricted free-agent this summer, meaning that he doesn't have much control over where he plays next season and with few NBA teams having ample cap space, Thomas may have to settle for what the Nets want to pay him. It's possible that Thomas is frustrated by his first foray into free-agency, something that Lowe understands, but Lowe also wanted to make it clear how he feels about the controversy and Thomas. Kyrie Irving fires back at former Nets teammate Kevin Durant's claim about commitment

Kevin Durant recently appeared on the "Mind the Game" podcast with LeBron James and Steve Nash. The 2013-14 MVP made headlines over comments he made while discussing his Brooklyn Nets tenure with his former head coach, where he claimed that they were the only two that were committed to winning. Kyrie Irving revealed that he would address the comments on stream. The nine-time All-Star did just that as he fired back at his former co-star suggesting that he wasn't committed. "When he said this, emotionally, I was like, okay," Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving claimed Tuesday. "We're all committed to the goal at the end of the day, but sometimes not everybody's going to follow what you want them to do. I wish I had my soundboard for this, but not everybody's going to do what you want them to do." Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp "I've had to accept that as a human being and as a leader -- not everybody's going to do what you want them to do," Irving continued. "Not everybody's going to be committed the way you want them to be committed. And it's not like K is asking me for this, but I asked for this commitment before I committed to Brooklyn from him, which was a beautiful thing. I'm like, 'yo, let's commit to this thing, we can build up Brooklyn and we can really put Brooklyn on the map. Nobody's been thinking about Brooklyn. But when he said that, I'm like, bro, Steve wasn't even in the play yet." Irving added that Durant was responsible for Nash being hired. He noted that things going on behind the scenes made the situation weird for everybody involved. The superstar point guard's decision not to take the COVID-19 vaccine led many to claim that he wasn't truly serious about winning a championship. While he was suspended to begin the 2021-22 season, Irving ultimately held firm on his stance. His decision contributed to James Harden asking for a trade and ultimately being dealt to the Philadelphia 76ers. Irving, Durant and Nash all saw their tenure with the Nets end the following season. Kyrie Irving clears air on relationship with Kevin Durant, playing together with Nets

Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant appeared to be very close friends prior to their tenure as teammates on the Brooklyn Nets. Their off-the-court relationship was a big part of the reason why they chose to team up with one another. There has been speculation that the way things soured in Brooklyn has fractured the nature of their relationship, with some fans even suggesting that the two may no longer be friends. Irving cleared the air on their relationship. "I'd like to just say this as a disclaimed, okay," Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving revealed Tuesday. "Me and KD are not beefing. I'm not beefing with Steve Nash. I'm not beefing with anybody, you guys. This is not personal against KD." Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Irving later touched on sharing the court with the 2013-14 MVP. "I will say this," Irving stated. "The 7/11 duo of me and KD will never be topped in terms of just being on the court with somebody that special. So, let me get that disclaimer out. Let me get that disclaimer. I've played with a lot of great players, but playing with KD -- that was OD. One of the best of all-time." Irving and Durant thrived on the court during their limited time as teammates. There were far too many off-the-court distractions, however, which ultimately led to the duo both being traded during the 2022-23 season. While there has been speculation that there could be bad blood between the two superstars, Irving's comments suggest that they remain on good terms. The two stars once again shared the court as teammates at the 2025 All-Star Game. More NBA:
