EMMA RADUCANU survived the heat of Wimbledon's hottest opening day – but almost got wiped out by a stray champagne cork.
Mimi Xu, a South Wales schoolgirl, was sent back to the classroom she lost 6-3 6-3 to the former US Open champion on her debut.

This was not quite the schooling that many had expected, given the gulf in class, age and experience because Xu, 17, performed admirably on her rookie appearance.
Yet Raducanu's supremacy, particularly when it came to serving, saw her advance comfortably to round two and she showed no signs of any back problems that had plagued her summer plans.
In fact, the biggest challenge she faced was evading a cork that flew out of a champagne bottle and on to No.1 Court turf.
This happened after Raducanu had taken the first set and she comically offered it back to the culprit in the crowd.
Champagne tennis from the British No.1 will have to wait for another day but this was an encouraging start to her campaign.
It was a sticky 31.7 degrees in south-west London by the time Raducanu began her eleventh singles appearance at Wimbledon.
This arena brings back uncomfortable memories as it was here that she suffered an anxiety attack in her debut year in the last 16 against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic.
Back then, she was an unknown teenager, thrust into the spotlight of Wimbledon while in the middle of her A Levels.

A few months later she passed her biggest exam of them all, winning the US Open in historic fashion and becoming a global superstar.
Xu is in a similar situation to the pre-famous Raducanu verison from that early part of 2021.
Earlier this month, the Swansea star sat her biology A Level and when she came out of the room, she discovered she had received a All England Club wildcard.
The pair both have Chinese parentage – Raducanu speaks to Xu's mum in Mandarin.
And Xu is coached by Nigel Sears, who was in Raducanu's box four years ago.
They even dress the same, with similar Nike white clothes, golf visor and hair in a ponytail – though Xu had green underwear on – and celebrated key points in identical manner.

After breaking the Xu serve inside two minutes, Raducanu was instructed by coach Mark Petchey to get her racquet restrung backstage.
That break proved decisive as she moved one-nil up after 36 minutes and then dominated the second set to win her fourth match on grass this month.
The next match will be against Marketa Vondrousova, the 2023 Wimbledon champion from the Czech Republic, and that will be a far harder proposition.
Provided they can both stay clear of champagne corks that is.
Post-match, Raducanu said: 'I'm super pleased to have come through that match. It's so difficult playing another Brit in the first round, when the draw came out.
'I can't say I was loving it. Mimi is a really dangerous player. She's so young. Got some amazing weapons at her disposal.
'I am really happy to have come through that and I want to thank everyone for their support on both sides. It was a really nice atmosphere.
'Sometimes it's difficult (to find rhythm) in the moment with nerves and adrenaline, you don't have an idea of what is going on. I think I had some really good patches.
'And some moments where I lost my focus and Mimi was able to come back.
'I'm really happy with how I toughed it out in the really crucial games and won the important points today.
'Well, I'm glad people were having fun today. I mean I saw a champagne cork fly on to the court – glad you guys are having a good time. Cheers to you.
'It's really nice to be back and I just use it as support. I love it. I love playing in this atmosphere. It's my favourite tournament by far. I'm just so happy to get another match here.'

Rhayader farmer aims to break British sheep shearing record

A TWO-time Welsh champion shearer from Powys is teaming up with a national team colleague to try and set a British record. Gethin Lewis, a farmer from Rhayader, will be attempting the 8-hour two stand British ewe record, along with Welsh team-mate Llyr Evans, next weekend. The event will take place on Saturday, July 12, at Glan Elan Farm, Cwmdauddwr, just outside Rhayader, where Gethin, 29, has farmed his whole life. Gethin has already achieved many feats in the shearing world, including becoming back-to-back champion shearer of Wales at the Royal Welsh Show, in both 2023 and 2024. He has also represented Wales for three seasons in New Zealand and was part of the first-ever Welsh test match team to win on Kiwi soil. After 12 months of training and preparation, the duo will now attempt the 8-hour two stand British ewe record, while raising money for the Wales Air Ambulance and Brain Tumour Research. 'Since being involved with Nick Greaves and Llyr Jones' nine-hour lamb record in 2022, it inspired me to want to attempt one myself,' said Gethin. 'So, in 2023, we set out a personal best/tally day to see if I could shear 700 ewes in nine hours. I managed to shear 737, which motivated me further to try a record attempt with Llyr (Evans), who had shorn a tally of 734 in 2024." Llyr, from Trawsgoed, near Aberystwyth, said: 'I have helped with several records and enjoyed being involved and supporting the attempt. 'I always enjoy being surrounded by hard-working people, which makes me push myself a bit more to get to their level.' Gethin grew up on the family farm at Glan Elan, which has over 1,000 breeding ewes and a 60-head suckler herd. He started shearing aged 17, after leaving college, and currently runs a shearing business in partnership with a friend, which was passed down to them in 2022. Shearing season begins in mid-May and finishes just after the Royal Welsh Show, at the end of July. 'I have been a part of the Welsh speed shearing team for two seasons, winning speed shear test matches in New Zealand and in Australia at the Wagga Wagga Speed Shear in 2024,' added Gethin. 'I have also (recently) become a shearing instructor, which I enjoy.' Llyr lives on the home farm of Hendre Rhys and starts his season shearing around the UK, before returning home in June. Llyr has completed six seasons shearing in New Zealand and has also shorn in Norway and Denmark. Gethin and Llyr's attempt at establishing the first British record at this discipline will start at 7am on July 12, with the first run. The second run will be from 9.30-11.30am, the third is from 12.30-2.30pm and the final run is from 3-5pm.

Liverpool reject Bayern Munich approach for Luis Diaz

The PA news agency understands the Premier League champions have no intention of selling the 28-year-old, who played a key role in Liverpool's title success last term. Bayern are the second club to have registered an interest in Diaz this summer, with Barcelona having already been rebuffed. Diaz, who joined Liverpool from Porto in 2022, has two years left on his contract. He scored 17 goals for the Reds last season, 13 of them in the league as Arne Slot's side won the title by 10 points. He has 41 goals in 148 appearances for Liverpool. Last month Diaz said he was happy at Anfield but his representatives had held discussions with other clubs. Speaking during a press conference before Colombia's World Cup qualifier against Peru, Diaz said: 'We are currently in contact with Liverpool, because we are talking to clubs, and that's normal given the transfer market that's opening. We're trying to arrange what's best for us. 'We're talking to clubs, it's normal in the market and we're looking at what's best for us. 'I'm waiting to see what happens. I'm very happy at Liverpool, I've always said so. They've welcomed me very well from day one. 'If they give us a good renewal or I stay there for two years, I'll be happy. Now it's up to them.' A post shared by Liverpool Football Club (@liverpoolfc) Meanwhile, former Netherlands captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst has joined Liverpool as an assistant coach as part of a number of changes to Slot's backroom staff. The ex-Feyenoord and Rangers boss is joined by Xavi Valero, a former member of Rafael Benitez's Liverpool staff who returns to the club as goalkeeping coach after seven years with West Ham. Goalkeeping coaches Fabian Otte and Claudio Taffarel have both left the club.

Porto's poor domestic form continued in the Club World Cup, where they picked up a measly two points from three group matches. And Anselmi, who guided Porto to a third-placed Primeira Liga finish last season, has paid the price for the team's woeful run, which culminated with a defeat to Lionel Messi's Inter Miami. A snippet of a club statement read: "FC Porto - Futebol, SAD informs that it has begun negotiations with coach Martín Anselmi to terminate the sports employment contract that has been in force since January 2025."
