
Minnetrista mom of 3 uses data and science through Edina lab to improve her life
"I had my third baby. I wasn't feeling good," said Valerie Vadnais Wall. "I was tired all the time taking care of everybody else and not myself."
She's been running for the last 10 years, and has seen huge improvement in her health.
"I've lost 65 pounds," said Vadnais Wall.
She loved running so much that she joined a group of women in the Chaska/Chanhassen community to keep her motivated.
"I decided that I want to have fun and join something that is empowering, and it was Mom's On The Run," said Vadnais Wall.
Now, she's preparing for her fourth marathon, which is taking place in the Twin Cities, and has decided to take her training to the next level. As a dentist who co-owns a practice, she believes in the science and importance of data.
"I don't want to succumb to the health diseases, like diabetes, high blood pressure. My mom has dementia, and I didn't want that for myself, so I wanted to take the power to have the data and then to do better," said Vadnais Wall, who came to Kelly McKenzie at the Human Powered Health lab in Edina, Minnesota.
"It's nice to have data to validate what you're doing is working for you," said McKenzie.
At the lab, McKenzie measures her oxygen levels, heart rate, bone strength and balance.
"For her going into premenopause, and then menopause eventually, you want to make sure that your bone is in a really healthy spot, so that when your estrogen starts to decrease, your bone will naturally go with it," said McKenzie.
This type of testing is not reserved for elite athletes. It's recommended for everyone seeking to further their knowledge on their health and well-being.
"I'm not a professional athlete, so it's a little intimidating, but [Kelly] made it super easy and comfortable, and I'm excited to know that all this hard work is paying off," said Vadnais Wall.
This type of testing will help Vadnais Wall with basic things outside of running, like lifting groceries and walking up stairs, to avoid any injuries.
"I do feel that, at 51, I'm in the best shape of my life, even after my 20s and 30s, so I'm excited," said Vadnais Wall. "I do want to be that role model to other people, to other women who are middle-aged."
Vadnais Wall will be running the Twin Cities Marathon on Oct. 5 with her kids cheering her on along the course.

What Is Pelvic Organ Prolapse?
You know the feeling: You've just finished going to the bathroom, and you walk to the sink to wash your hands. Maybe you peek in the mirror and smooth down your flyaways or reapply lipstick. Then it hits you. You have to pee again. So why is this happening? There's no simple answer since bladder frequency can be caused by many things, from a UTI to pelvic floor disorders. According to a 2025 study published in BMC Women's Health, nearly 50 percent of women will experience some form of pelvic disorder in their lifetime. But a significant education gap remains, starting with who can experience what. Many people assume that issues like urinary frequency and incontinence center around people who have given birth or those over 55. This is especially true when the word 'prolapse' comes into play. The Oxford Dictionary defines prolapse as 'a displacement of a part or organ of the body from its normal position.' A pelvic organ prolapse refers to a displacement of any organ in the pelvic region, like the uterus, bladder, or rectum. What is pelvic prolapse? While a prolapse can only be diagnosed by a medical professional, it can happen to anyone with a vagina. They might be post-partum or post-menopausal, as young as 11 or as old as 92. Yes, women have been dealing with prolapse since the beginning of time, but 'that doesn't mean it's normal,' says Meghan Markowski, PT, DPT, a board-certified pelvic floor physical therapist at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. What causes pelvic organ prolapse? How do one's organs shift? Some use the analogy of a house to explain the mechanics of the pelvic floor: the bones are like a foundation, the muscles provide the floor and stability, and the connective tissue functions like beams, linking everything together. It's when the muscles are weakened and instability occurs that prolapses begin to happen. Pregnancy, thanks to hormonal changes and the increased weight of the uterus, is one common cause. 'But prolapse is not exclusive to pregnancy and delivery,' says Markowski. Some people have a genetic predisposition, and anyone suffering from a condition that puts repeated stress on the pelvic floor, like a chronic cough or asthma, may also be susceptible. Then there's the blessing (and occasional complication) of being hypermobile. A clear benefit to athletes like gymnasts and cheerleaders, hypermobility affects the entire body, including the connective tissues of the pelvis. When these supportive beams are overstretched and weakened, the entire pelvic floor is destabilized. Karen Kowenski, a Houston-based pelvic floor physical therapist and owner of Empower Yourself PT, has seen children as young as 11 dealing with a weakened pelvic floor. There can also be a correlation between certain forms of aggressive exercise and incontinence. 'If we're constantly jumping and pushing, or lifting heavy weights, and we don't have a strong support system, little by little by little, our organs are going to start to change position,' says Markowski. 'Those types of activities can be good for you, but they could exacerbate these issues' if performed improperly or excessively. You don't have to eschew this type of exercise, but a strong and coordinated pelvic floor will help prevent a possible prolapse or other pelvic floor disorders. Reducing urinary frequency caused by prolapse There are small changes you can make to reduce urinary frequency. Kowenski says the first order of business is to assess any lifestyle patterns. 'Are you constipated? Do you hold your breath when you lift weights? How do you move around?' Sometimes it's just about better body mechanics. Kowenski observed a teen horseback rider who would experience incontinence after she landed from a jump. Kowenski watched the way she positioned her body on the landing: 'Her back was arched, and this [impact] was putting extra pressure on the bladder.' A slight repositioning of her torso while jumping immediately eliminated the leakage. 'There's a lot that we can do about [pelvic floor issues],' says Markowski, but there are also things you can try on your own, like a technique called the double void. Typically, when we go to the bathroom, we sit on a toilet and relax our pelvic floor muscles to release urine. If everything is in the perfect place, your bladder will naturally empty in one sitting; however, even a small prolapse can cause the bladder to become slightly askew. This displacement can cause a section of the organ to sit behind the urethra, making it impossible for the bladder to drain effectively in the typical seated position. This is why you may have the sensation of emptying your bladder, but after standing up and allowing gravity to move things around, you realize there's more urine waiting to be emptied. This is the thinking behind the double void; sometimes, we just have to physically encourage urine to leave the body by repositioning the bladder. 'If we're suspicious that there's a change in the position of your bladder, you can stand up and lean forward to try to reposition where your bladder is on top of the urethra,' says Markowski. After you stand briefly, you sit back down on the toilet and try again. All of this shifting and standing should take less than one minute. If necessary, you can add some rocking movements: Kowenski recommends 'sitting on the toilet, and rocking back and forth, side to side.' With that physical encouragement, any trapped urine should see the light of day. A little movement and an extra minute will help ensure you're really done. Which states' air quality are most impacted by Canadian wildfires? See map.
As wildfires spread across Canada, air quality in the U.S. continues to be impacted, and people sensitive to air pollution could face "serious health effects," according to a government website that tracks air quality in the United States. There are 59 uncontrolled wildfires and 108 controlled wildfires across Canada as of Wednesday, July 30, the country's National Wildland Fire Situation Report said on its website. To date this year, there have been 3,582 fires. Fires have burned nearly 1.5 million acres since the start of 2025, according to the country's report. The smoke floating over the border shared between America and Canada is now impacting air quality in states as far south as Texas, AirNow's data shows. The EPA has declared the air quality in states near the Canadian border as "unhealthy or "unhealthy for sensitive groups." See maps and impacted states. How financial advisors with ADHD manage symptoms — and thrive
When Aubrey Williams, a financial advisor at Open Path Financial in Goleta, California, watched his kids fill out an ADHD diagnostic questionnaire, he realized nearly all of the symptoms applied to him. It was a moment of revelation — one that would ultimately change the course of his business. For financial advisors, recognizing ADHD symptoms and learning how to manage them can have a profound impact on daily work and long-term success. ADHD is far from uncommon in adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 15.5 million American adults were living with ADHD in 2023. While there is no data on the number of financial advisors who have ADHD, the Financial Planning Association launched the Neurodivergent Planner Knowledge Circle in October 2021 to offer support and community. "ADHD is something that if you don't confront it, it can really wreck your life," said Otto Rivera, an investment manager at Bedford, Massachusetts-based White Lighthouse Investment Management and host of the FPA knowledge circle. "It can always make you feel like you're behind everyone, even though you're talented." READ MORE: For clients with disabilities, proper communication is key There are three types of ADHD, according to the CDC: predominantly inattentive (difficulties focusing), hyperactive-impulsive (excessive physical movement and impulsive behavior), and combination (symptoms of both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive ADHD). "When you get diagnosed, you have this awareness now," Rivera said. "It does empower you to start making decisions, work with it and be happier." ADHD challenges for financial advisors The symptoms of ADHD vary from person to person. Rivera, who was diagnosed in 2021, said he often experiences inattentiveness and difficulty initiating certain tasks that he finds challenging. It can also be hard for him to pick up on details, especially when clients are verbally communicating a great deal of information. "Distraction is always there, now more than ever with our phones and all our notifications and email coming in and getting direct messages from colleagues," he said. "All those things do contribute and can actually worsen the challenges." Williams said that for those with inattentive-type ADHD, the struggles are often internal. Individuals might experience fatigue, anxiety or difficulties in establishing relationships. "Sometimes there's so much going on inside that it's hard to relate to another person," he said. READ MORE: 'The threat is existential,' but these leaders are staying the course on DEI Williams added that it can also be challenging for him to adapt to an environment that lacks structure or routine, leading to procrastination and anxiety over meeting deadlines at the last minute. Even starting simple tasks can be hard, whether due to low motivation, lack of planning or other factors. "It can be a little overwhelming," Williams said. "For neurotypical people, they sort of build their own internal scaffolding to emulate that, but [for individuals with ADHD], it could be very intense and draining." How to manage ADHD symptoms For financial advisors with ADHD, it's also about managing their energy, Rivera said. What works for him, Rivera said, is working on more complicated tasks in the morning after taking his medication, and then leaving easier tasks for the afternoon when his energy is lower. Williams recommended that for more sophisticated long-term tasks, financial advisors with ADHD plan ahead and break it down into smaller parts that can be gradually completed. He recalled situations in which a big project would be on the horizon, not due anytime soon. "I spent [those times] sort of in agony, not able to start, but wanting to," he said. "I had to adapt my way to neurotypical people." For those who are trying to motivate themselves, Williams suggested they try "body doubling," in which they work alongside someone on Zoom or in a coffee shop to stay in a productive environment. Another strategy he uses to keep himself on track with work is to hold a daily debrief of his planned tasks with someone in the morning. Similarly, Rivera recommended using calendar apps to set task reminders and reviewing next day's plan the night before. He added that AI notetakers are helpful to ensure detailed documentation. And having an item on hand to fidget with, such as a clickable pen, can also help improve focus. "That will just create physical placebo for me to create some tension on my body and then keep me in the loop," Rivera said. To avoid feeling overwhelmed with information over the course of a conversation, Williams suggested financial advisors ask the most important questions early in order to absorb the essential details. For Williams, having a comfortable and organized space is extremely important to helping him stay focused for work. His preference is for a clear desk, with his phone kept out of reach to avoid distractions. He also likes to listen to a consistent playlist to establish a steady work rhythm. Physical exertion can also help with the management of symptoms. Rivera recommended incorporating a simple daily cardio workout, which he has found to be life-changing. "It gets you in a really good mood," he said. "It helps you get a lot of clarity, and it helps with your focus." Don't be afraid to let clients know you have ADHD Rivera said he's comfortable sharing his neurodivergence when his clients ask about it. He has yet to encounter a client who thought differently about him after learning of his condition. "Our general population is much more aware of ADHD and other neurodivergent challenges that folks have out there," he said. "It's a more empathetic world out there than it used to be some years ago." Williams added that although all of his clients are accepting, when he initially considered sharing his diagnosis, it seemed like a risk to be "putting myself out there." However, he noticed that other neurodivergent financial advisors were comfortable being vulnerable with clients. That gave him the confidence to be open with his clients. Then he took it a step further. Now, he's turned his expertise in neurodivergence to his advantage. He frequently shares personal stories about himself with clients, including the story of how he paid off his debt after learning how to manage his ADHD symptoms. "It sort of sets the tone that I am a person of compassion and understanding," Williams said. "I'm not someone who does everything [perfectly] and knows the right answer to everything, [but] I do my best to educate myself and learn." Solve the daily Crossword
