Leona Maguire five shots off the early lead at Women's Irish Open

LEONA MAGUIRE IS five shots off the early lead on day one of the KPMG Women's Irish Open. Switzerland's Chiara Tamburlini has set the pace at Carton House, six-under after an opening round 67. You can follow the leaderboard here> Maguire carded 72: The Cavan golfer started with a bogey on the first, before a steady, par-laden front nine. She birdied the 11th, before dropping further shots on holes 16 and 17, and rounding off with a second birdie on the 18th. Advertisement At the time of writing, she sits in a 19-way share of 29th. Emma Fleming, Anna Foster, Aine Donegan and Olivia Mehaffey are all above Maguire on the leaderboard. Fleming remains in action, but is the best of the Irish as things stand, three-under thru 15. Foster and Donegan both shot rounds of 71 to sit two-under, while Mehaffey has made the dream start with an eagle on the first. Sara Byrne, Canice Screenan and Anna Dawson have also just opened their rounds. Meanwhile, Kildare local Lauren Walsh signed for a two-over 75 after an improved showing on the back nine. It was a similar story for Beth Coulter and Olivia Costello, who shot rounds of 76. Roisin Scanlon (2.24pm) and Anna Abom (3pm) are the later Irish starters. More to follow.

Paul Shankey steps down as manager of Waterford footballers

PAUL SHANKEY HAS stepped down as manager of the Waterford senior footballers. The Meath native decided against taking up the option of a third year at the helm. Chairperson of Waterford GAA, Neil Moore, said: 'We extend our sincere thanks to Paul for his commitment and service to Waterford football. Advertisement 'His contribution over the past two years has been valued, and we wish him every success in the future.' Shankey led Waterford to a memorable win over Tipperary in 2024 – the Déise's first Munster SFC victory in 14 years. However Waterford had a disappointing season in 2025, winning just one game as they finished bottom of Division 4 in the National League. Waterford suffered a three-point defeat to Tipperary in the quarter-finals of the Munster SFC, and lost all three games in Group 2 of the Tailteann Cup.

Another county on the lookout for a new football manager as departure announced

Paul Shankey has decided against taking up the option for a third year as Waterford senior football manager. The highlight of the former Meath footballer's two-year spell was a Munster quarter-final win over Tipperary last year, their first Championship win over their neighbours in 36 years. It was also their first victory in Munster in 14 years and bridged a six-year gap to their last Championship win of any kind. But Shankey found progress in the League and Tailteann Cup hard to come by. They finished bottom of Division Four in each of the last two years and failed to qualify from their group in the second tier competition in either season. In a statement, Waterford GAA credited Shankey, who has been a long-time resident in the county, for bringing 'professionalism and dedication to the role' and 'helping to guide the team through a period of development and transition'. Waterford chairman Neil Moore added: 'We extend our sincere thanks to Paul for his commitment and service to Waterford football. His contribution over the past two years has been valued, and we wish him every success in the future. 'The process to appoint a new senior football team management will now begin.' Shankey's departure means that Waterford join Louth, Sligo, Mayo, Antrim, Roscommon and Dublin in looking for a new football manager.
