‘Spokesperson' for AI ‘Band' Velvet Sundown Now Says He's a Hoaxer

Yahooa day ago
The pseudonymous Andrew Frelon, who spoke to Rolling Stone on Wednesday as a spokesperson for the viral AI band The Velvet Sundown, and runs a Twitter account that purports to represent the band, was running an elaborate hoax aimed at the media, he now says in a Medium post. The band's official Spotify page also posted a notice insisting that Frelon — who 'confirmed' that the band created music with the AI tool Suno — is unaffiliated with the band. Velvet Sundown currently have more than 700,000 listeners on Spotify.
A Velvet Sundown X account that's linked to from the band's Spotify page messaged Rolling Stone early Thursday morning asking for a correction and reiterating their disavowal of Frelon. 'We understand the intrigue our project inspires — and we're not here to dispel mystery,' the Spotify-linked account Twitter said in a DM early Thursday morning. 'But we are here to correct the record….The Velvet Sundown is a multidisciplinary artistic project blending music, analog aesthetics, and speculative storytelling. While we embrace ambiguity as part of our narrative design, we ask that reporting on us be based on verifiable sources — not fabricated accounts or synthetic media.' (The 'band' have not yet responded to a request for further comment.)

In his lengthy Medium post, Frelon claims that he took advantage of the Velvet Sundown's lack of social-media presence and transformed another account he had started in March into what purported to be the band's 'official account.' From there, he claims, he used a long list of 'social engineering' tricks, including interactions with the media, to make it appear to be the band's actual account — with the supposed aim of testing journalists. 'Knowing from past projects something about the dynamics of journalistic news coverage,' he writes, 'I thought it would be funny to start calling out journalists in a general way about not having reached out to 'us' for commentary.' Frelon also told Rolling Stone on Wednesday that he had a strong interest in 'art hoaxes.' (The phone number Frelon called from, with a 514 area code, now has a 'not in service' message.)
Despite the obvious AI origins of its photos and music, Velvet Sundown has been picked up on numerous Spotify playlists, attaining substantial listenership that led to widespread media coverage. Glenn McDonald, a former 'data alchemist' at Spotify, told Rolling Stone that their prominence on the streaming service is emblematic of a move 'away from understandable algorithms with strong grounding in actual human listening and communities' and toward AI-driven systems that 'can pick songs for recommendations based on characteristics of their audio.'

Families in Ocean Park embrace historical, festive Fourth of July celebration

Jul. 4—OCEAN PARK — Isabella Chute, 11, shuffled across a handmade wooden stage fashioned to a trailer while her family distributed buckets and American flags in preparation for Friday's Fourth of July parade. Her red and blue dress, which doubles as her solo costume for her dance team in Gray, glittered in the sunshine as she tapped across the board to an instrumental version of Tom Petty's "American Girl." Isabella had been practicing her tap routine for days ahead of Ocean Park's annual Fourth of July celebration. She and her brother, 7-year-old Kurtis, have watched the parade every summer with their grandparents, Pam and Jeff, who live in Ocean Park year-round. But Friday marked the first time the family from New Gloucester made a float. Like many families who visit the coastal village nestled in Old Orchard Beach, four generations of Isabella's family have spent summers in Ocean Park, said her mother, Cindy. A few groups of people wearing matching T-shirts carried banners through the parade, showing off their family's historical homes that have been around for decades. "The Fourth of July itself has built upon years and years of tradition," said Dennis LeBlanc, 79, who has visited the community every summer since 1992. Some paradegoers described Friday's celebration as a mix of Halloween and Independence Day. Hundreds of people lined Temple Street, awaiting candy and clapping, while various community groups — including a kazoo band — marched down the streets. Among the patriotic red, white and blue, some people wore inflatable dinosaur costumes, "Wicked"-themed outfits and superhero attire. "Anything goes," said Michele Bouchard, who was gearing up to drive a pirate-themed golf cart with skeletons stuck to the top. Harper, 8, and Nolan and Henry, both 5, sat in the back seat of the cart, wearing eye patches and golden temporary tattoos. This year marked the family's sixth summer visiting Ocean Park and their second year in the parade, she said. They've already started planning the decorations for next year's "Jaws" theme, Harper said. After the parade ended, Dennis LeBlanc and his wife, Maggie, found a shady bench in a park to relax. A few blocks away, dozens of people folded up their beach chairs and stayed outside, socializing on their wraparound porches and in their driveways. Maggie LeBlanc, 79, said she and her husband always visit their second home during the Fourth of July, which falls just around the time they're ready to get away from their home in Greenfield, Massachusetts. Dennis LeBlanc said he was introduced to Ocean Park in the 1970s by his mentor, a retired minister who invited him to his cottage. The historic community, which is affiliated with the Free Will Baptists, has expanded to include community programming, a temple for nondenominational Christian worship and more families who live there during the summer. "As soon as I came up here, the place was different," he said. "I could kind of feel it." As the summers pass, the LeBlancs have noticed the vintage cars cruising the parade route getting newer. They've seen people tearing down old cottages to build taller, more expensive homes. They feel deeper political polarization — even the colors red, white and blue "feel different to me now," Maggie LeBlanc said. But in the summers, she said Ocean Park is where people leave their egos and politics behind. "It's one of the few places in our world, I think, that there isn't a competition, divisiveness — at least for the day," Dennis LeBlanc said. "It's the way we wish the world outside of here could be. It's simple, caring, kind." Copy the Story Link

Today's ‘Wordle' #1477 Hints, Clues And Answer For Friday, July 4th

How to solve today's Wordle. Looking for Friday's Wordle hints, clues and answer? You can find them here: I hope everyone had a lovely 4th of July holiday. As I write this post for Saturday, I am also in the middle of frantically preparing for our 4th of July barbecue, so I'm going to make it short and sweet. Huzzah! How To Solve Today's Wordle The Hint: Useful for hay, I guess. The Clue: This Wordle begins and ends with consonants. Okay, spoilers below! The answer is coming! . . . Today's Wordle Every day I check Wordle Bot to help analyze my guessing game. You can check your Wordles with Wordle Bot right here. CRIME didn't pay, which I should have known. 225 words remained, though I did have two yellow boxes. I tried mostly new letters with STEAK and got one new yellow box in the process. BEARD was lucky, giving me the green 'B' I needed, and at this point I honestly only could come up with one word, though Wordle Bot later told me there were two. Thankfully, BALER was the Wordle! (Not to be confused with BALLER). Huzzah again! We tied, so the Wordle Bot and I get no points for that and no points for guessing in four. Our July totals remain: Erik: -2 points Wordle Bot: 4 points The word "baler" comes from the verb "bale," meaning to make something into bales (bundles). "Bale" traces back to Middle English bale and Old French bale, from Old High German bala meaning 'bundle.' The suffix '-er' denotes an agent—so a baler is someone or something (like a machine) that makes bales. Let me know how you fared with your Wordle today on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook.
