Sweden happy to be 'flying under the radar' ahead of Euro 2025 Quarterfinal against England
Sweden topped its group with maximum points after three wins, including a memorable 4-1 victory over Germany, while England finished second in its group after bouncing back from an opening loss to France by thrashing the Netherlands and then Wales. But while England is considered one of the favorites at Euro 2025, Sweden is rarely mentioned when it comes to naming the potential tournament winners.
'We are always flying under the radar, I would say,' Sweden captain Kosovare Asllani said Wednesday, 'and it is something that kind of suits us because obviously we think that we are one of the best teams in the world due to the results we have been doing the last few years from the tournaments. But people rarely speak about us as someone that can win the gold … and it suits us kind of because we know we can beat any team in the world when we have our best day.'
Sweden has collected a whole host of silver and bronze medals at tournaments but hasn't lifted a trophy since winning the first Women's Euros in 1984. In coach Peter Gerhardsson's eight-year tenure, Sweden was twice a World Cup semifinalist, took the silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, and reached the Euro 2022 semifinals – where it was routed 4-0 by England. However, the players sense that this could be the year the team shakes off its bridesmaid reputation.
'We have an incredible belief in one another and the entire team, and we do play very intense and physical football,' Asllani said. 'Since Peter took over as coach ... we have developed enormously over these past few years and got better and better. It feels as if we are a very hungry side now. We want success.'
Sweden and England have been evenly matched since that semifinal in 2022, with their two encounters in the Euro 2025 qualifiers ending in draws. England is also only one spot above sixth-placed Sweden in the world rankings.
'It's the kind of game that both teams want, and I mean any top player in the world wants to be playing in the big games,' England defender Lucy Bronze said. 'For me, it's probably the most exciting quarterfinal because the teams are so full of confidence quality … I think they're probably two of the highest ranked teams facing off against each other. But we knew that coming into the quarterfinals it was going to be against a tough team. We obviously watched Sweden and Germany play each other … These are exciting times being in a tournament playing against top teams.'

Dolphins CB Kader Kohou to go on season-ending IR with knee injury
Dolphins starting cornerback Kader Kohou will miss the 2025 season after suffering a knee injury in practice on Saturday. Miami coach Mike McDaniel said Wednesday morning that Kohou, a former undrafted player who quickly worked his way into a starting role, will go on injured reserve. Kohou went down grabbing at his right knee after a one-on-one rep against receiver Tyreek Hill during practice. He remained down for a couple minutes while being looked at by trainers before walking gingerly, but under his own power, off the Dolphins practice field. 'I've seen him come into the league with nothing promised and earn his spot within this team,' McDaniel said. 'And this year in particular, I saw him ascend to a different level, trying to take the reigns of his career and get his game to an even higher level. For that and the timing of it, I was crushed until I talked to Kader, and honestly Kader made me feel a little bit better about where he was at simply by his mindset.' Kohou signed with the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and has recorded 180 tackles, one sack, and three interceptions in three years. It's a significant blow to Miami's secondary that has undergone significant changes since the end of last season. All of the Dolphins starters in the secondary – including All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, who was traded, and safety Jevon Holland, who left in free agency – are gone. Miami recently signed veteran cornerback Mike Hilton, who figures to be the likely starter in the slot this season. Former Raiders and Patriots cornerback Jack Jones also recently signed with Miami to compete for an outside cornerback spot. Other options on the boundary include veteran Kendall Sheffield, Cam Smith, and Storm Duck. McDaniel said he feels good about the Dolphins depth at cornerback right now but did not rule out the possibility of signing another experienced player. 'If there was a situation in a week where I didn't feel that we were good,' McDaniel added, '(general manager) Chris (Grier) and I would talk and we would get something done there.' Miami's secondary will also be without Ashtyn Davis for a while after the safety suffered a noncontact injury in practice this week. McDaniel said the team is still evaluating the extent of the injury, but it isn't expected to be season-ending.

Xhaka Joins Sunderland from Leverkusen on Three-Year Deal
Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka has joined Sunderland on a three-year contract, returning to the Premier League two years after he left Arsenal for Bayer Leverkusen, the English club said on Wednesday. Xhaka, 32, spent seven years at Arsenal before joining Leverkusen, where he won the Bundesliga and reached the Europa League final in his debut season. No fee was disclosed for the transfer, but English media reports said Sunderland signed Xhaka for 17.3 million pounds ($23.14 million). The move to the newly-promoted Premier League club comes a week after Leverkusen manager Erik ten Hag said Xhaka was too important for the club to let go. "I'm very proud to be here. When I spoke to the Club, I was excited and I felt the energy, and the mentality that all the people and players have," Xhaka said in a statement. Xhaka, who has made 225 Premier League appearances for Arsenal, won the FA Cup twice with the North London side. Sunderland begin their league campaign with a home game against West Ham United on August 16.
