'A mistake': Aaron Rodgers at war with Steelers coaches as Jerome Bettis accuses team of abandoning their soul

Steelers' offseason acquisitions of Aaron Rodgers and DK Metcalf have sparked debate (Getty Images)
The Pittsburgh Steelers may have made headlines this offseason by landing
Aaron Rodgers
and DK Metcalf, but not everyone's convinced the glitzy moves align with the team's traditional DNA. In fact, Hall of Famer Jerome Bettis is ringing the alarm bells—and Rodgers might be silently agreeing.
Jerome Bettis questions Steelers' identity shift away from
run-first football
Aaron Rodgers signed with Pittsburgh for what could be his final NFL season, bringing a Hall of Fame résumé and a clear philosophy: he thrives in a controlled, efficient, pass-first offense. But that clashes with what offensive coordinator
Arthur Smith
has planned—a ground-heavy, tight end–centric scheme that echoes old-school football more than Rodgers' up-tempo style.
Bettis, appearing on The Dan Patrick Show, didn't hold back.
When Patrick asked about the departure of running back Najee Harris and whether Rodgers changes the team's approach, Bettis was clear: 'They're going to run the football. They drafted [a] young kid from Iowa who's really, really good running back.'

He emphasized that even with Rodgers and Metcalf on board, abandoning the run game would be a fundamental mistake. 'If you ask Aaron Rodgers to throw the ball 40 times, that's a mistake,' Bettis warned.

His logic? At 41, Rodgers shouldn't be scrambling or absorbing unnecessary hits. The offense should play through the run to maximize play-action and control tempo.
Clash of philosophies between Aaron Rodgers and Arthur Smith looms large
The tension deepens when you examine Arthur Smith's history. Known for heavy run schemes, multiple tight end sets, and complex pre-snap motion, Smith's system is almost the antithesis of what Rodgers prefers. The quarterback's track record thrives in motion-light, single-tight-end, pass-heavy playbooks—a setup far from what Pittsburgh appears to be building.
Even Bettis acknowledged this delicate balance: 'He's moving. He's getting the ball out. He's, you know, quick in the huddle, out of the huddle, running.' That doesn't mesh easily with Smith's grind-it-out game plans.
Beyond the philosophical divide, practical concerns remain. Pittsburgh's backfield, featuring rookie Kaleb Johnson and Jaylen Warren, is unproven. Meanwhile, the offensive line—an Achilles' heel for Rodgers in New York—must protect its aging quarterback or risk an early collapse.

The Steelers' attempt to fuse new-school talent with old-school identity could either produce fireworks—or a full-blown identity crisis. As Bettis said, this isn't about names on paper. It's about knowing who you are—and sticking to it.

IND vs ENG: 'Every two or three overs' - Ollie Pope reveals hilarious ritual before going out to bat

Ollie Pope, Ben Duckett and Joe Root of England (Photo by) As India and England gear up for the crucial 4th Test of the series in Manchester, spirits are high in both camps. A win for England will put a series victory out of reach for Shubman Gill's men, while a win for the visitors will set up a thrilling series finale. With less than three days to go until the 4th Test gets underway, England batter Ollie Pope went viral for a hilarious and light-hearted interview. The Englishman, who scored 44 and 4 in the Test at Lord's hasn't had the best of outings in the previous two Tests. However, the 27-year-old scored a blistering ton in the first innings for England, paving the way for a win at Headingley. In conversation with Sky Sports Cricket , the player shared a hilarious tactic that he uses ahead of games. When quizzed about what a player will do if they want to use the toilet in the middle of an innings, Pope did not hesitate to reveal the facts. "Yeah, you're in a bit of trouble. It's never actually happened - touch wood - just because I think weirdly when you're out there, you're king of sweating and so focused, you'd never really find yourself in that position," said Pope. — SkyCricket (@SkyCricket) However, he joked that its much more easier when you're not on the field, allowing him to run off. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? The Open 2025: Xander Schauffele leads the way

Xander Schauffele of the United States plays his tee shot on the 1st during the third round of the British Open golf championship at the Royal Portrush Golf Club, Northern Ireland, Saturday, July 19, 2025. (AP Photo/Peter Morrison) Portrush (Northern Ireland): The third day is often called the moving day. On that day, a Congress of eagles descended on the Royal Portrush at the 153rd Open. Eight of the top dozen players at the time of writing had landed at least one eagle — defending champion Xander Schauffele had two. But amidst all this, World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler stayed way ahead of the field. He was three clear of second-placed China's Li Haotong (10-under) and four ahead of Englishmen Tyrrell Hatton and Matt Fitzpatrick. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Rory McIlroy was looking dangerous at 8-under alongside last week's PGA Tour winner, Chris Gotterup, and Harris English of the US. All three were yet to finish. Scheffler of the calm demeanour and a languid walk seemed content building up blocks of pars and averting any potential stumbles early in the third round. There were six straight pars and none of them from over 10 feet, suggesting a build-up. But with just with one and a half rounds — 27 holes — left in this Open, he was two clear of the field and looked way more dominating than the three-shot lead suggested. Scheffler's second day 7-under 64 after a first round 68, had set the tone and he kept carrying on in the third round. After a sedate stretch of six pars, he let loose a 382-yard drive on the par-5 only to follow up with a 209-yard second shot to set up an eagle, He duly holed and moved to 12-under, even as Matt Fitzpatrick, who opened the day with a bogey, get an eagle to get to 10-under. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy the Dip: Top 5 Dividend Stocks with Growth Potential Seeking Alpha Read More Undo A few minutes later, Scheffler added some more distance between him and the field holing a 16-footer for his first birdie of the day – following up on an eagle – to reach 13-under. Right behind Scheffler and Fitzpatrick was Li Haotong, seeking to become the first Major champion from China. He was also seeking to end a long four-year slump during which he made just two Major starts – both missed cuts at the 2021 and 2022 Opens. He did not play a Major in either 2023 or 2024 and missed a ton of cuts on the DP World Tour. And yet at Portrush, he played as if he was never gone. Two straight 67s with no bogeys in his first 31 holes and after 36 he was eight-under — just two behind Scheffler and one behind Fitzpatrick. Poll Who do you think will win the 153rd Open? Scottie Scheffler Li Haotong Matt Fitzpatrick Rory McIlroy The only man missing out on the action seemed to be the 2023 champion, Brian Harman, who dropped shots on the first, third and the eighth and he had just one birdie to compensate for them. He had tumbled down to 5-under and out of Top-10. Scheffler and Fitzpatrick were not the only one landing eagles. Tyrrell Hatton holed out from 139 yards on the fairway on the seventh while Schauffele looking to become the first man since Irishman Padraig Harrington (2008-2009) to successfully defend the Claret Jug, had two, both with monster putts from 24 feet and 44 feet. Schauffele was 5-under for the day and had crept up to 7-under. Eagles being the flavour of the day, last week's PGA Tour winner at Rocket Classic, Chris Gotterup, joined the party from just inside 30 feet on the 12th. McIlroy, who began the day with a 36-foot birdie, added two more on the 2nd and the 4th. A string of pars followed but he was always with sniffing distance of birdies, yet it was a bogey that came his way on the 11th. But within minutes he holed a 56-footer for an eagle on the large green on the Par5 12th. He ended the day at 5-under 66 and was 8-under. Indian-American Akshay Bhatia was lying T-34th.
