Costco rolls out new perk to help shoppers beat crowds… but there's a catch
Executive tier members will be able to shop for an hour earlier than regular Gold Star members from June 30.
The big box retailer will now allow its top tier members, who pay $130 a year, to shop from 9am to 10am on weekdays and Sundays, and 9am to 9:30am on Saturdays.
'Our Executive Members are our most loyal members, and we want to reward them for their commitment to Costco,' the company told employees in an email seen by Business Insider.
The retail giant said that the top tier members would also start receiving a $10 monthly credit for Instacart orders, as well as $150 worth of other benefits and savings on Costco services.
Around half of Costco shoppers have Executive level memberships, but they account for 73 percent of sales, according to the company.
The top level also offers a 2 percent rebate on all Costco purchases made that year up to a total of $750.
Costco hopes the new shopping hours will reduce traffic in car parks and lines at checkouts, which is a key customer complaint.
However, it is also a move that could boost membership fee revenue, a key driver of Costco's bottom line.
Last year Costco brought in more than $4 billion a year from membership fees alone, after upping its rates in September.
As well as access to discounted groceries and electronics, Costco membership also gives shoppers access to services such as hearing tests and home insurance.
It is not yet clear whether the new shopping times will include these extra services.
It comes after Costco also expanded its gas station hours and added more pumps.
The retailer's gas stations are now open from 6am until 10pm on weekdays.
On Saturday and Sunday, Costco gas stations now open at 6am and close at 8:30pm and 7:30pm, respectively.
The wholesale giant originally closed it 60 gas stations at 9pm but decided to extend its hours further, much to the delight of its loyal customers.
Costco members are delighted that gas stations are now open an hour later
Costco has built a reputation for consistently offering gas prices below market averages, leading to the familiar sight of vehicle queues at Costco pumps across the country.
Fuel sales made up around 12 percent of the Costco's total sales last year, and its cheap gas and accessible stations are a key incentive for memberships.
Costco hiked its membership rates back in September last year, taking its standard Gold level membership from $60 to $65 and its Executive level by $10 to $130 a year.
It was the first time the retailer had upped its membership fees since June 2017.
The retail giant currently has around 52 million members in the US and Canada.

More than 3,000 Boeing workers who build fighter jets go on strike
Over 3,000 Boeing workers will begin striking Monday in Missouri and Illinois, after members rejected a four-year labor agreement with the aviation company. The strike follows a landslide vote against a revised job contract on July 27, where 3,200 workers who build fighter jets declined the deal. Workers assemble and maintain advanced aircraft and weapons systems, including the F-15, F/A-18 jets, along with a range of missile and defense technologies. The strike is the latest blow for the aviation giant, which has faced a string of issues including fatal air disasters, machinery malfunctions, and an almost two-month walkout by almost 30,000 workers in 2024. 'IAM District 837 members build the aircraft and defense systems that keep our country safe,' said IAM Midwest Territory General vice president Sam Cicinelli on Sunday. 'They deserve nothing less than a contract that keeps their families secure and recognizes their unmatched expertise,' he added. The IAM Union is one of the largest trade unions in the U.S., representing nearly 600,000 active and retired members from Lockheed Martin to United Airlines and an array of employees at numerous railroad, transit, healthcare, and automotive companies. Workers at Boeing defence hubs in St. Louis, St. Charles, Mo., and Mascoutah, Ill., said the proposal 'fell short of addressing the priorities and sacrifices of the skilled IAM Union workforce.' 'Our members are standing together to demand a contract that respects their work and ensures a secure future,' an IAM statement read on July 27. Boeing said they were 'disappointed' by their employees' decision in a statement. They said the deal was an offer 'that featured 40 percent average wage growth and resolved their primary issue on alternative work schedules.' 'We are prepared for a strike and have fully implemented our contingency plan to ensure our non-striking workforce can continue supporting our customers,' they added. In June, 260 people died after a London-bound Air India 787 Boeing Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff from the Ahmedabad airport in India's western state of Gujarat.

Swiss luxury watchmakers' shares drop after Trump tariff shock
Aug 4 (Reuters) - Swiss luxury watchmakers' shares, including Richemont (CFR.S), opens new tab and Swatch (UHR.S), opens new tab, were volatile in early trade on Monday, reflecting the challenge for the industry after U.S. President Donald Trumpset a 39% tariff on Swiss imports. The sector, which exported watches worth 26 billion Swiss francs ($33 billion) in 2024, is already under pressure from a stronger franc and falling global demand. Watch exports are on track to hit their lowest levels since the pandemic in 2020. "The impact of the U.S. tariffs, if they stay at 39%, could be devastating for numerous brands in Switzerland," said Jean-Philippe Bertschy, an analyst at Vontobel. Shares in Richemont and Swatch were both down around 1% at 0906 GMT, paring back losses after earlier falling as much as 3.4%, and 5%, respectively. Bertschy linked the move to hopes of Switzerland still getting a better deal - the tariffs are effective as of August 7. Swatch Group Chief Executive Nick Hayek called on Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter to meet Trump. "Tariffs can change at any moment due to the unpredictability of the Trump administration," said Georges Mari, co-owner of Zurich-based investment firm Rossier, Mari & Associates, which holds shares in Swatch, adding that it is "impossible to make a serious forecast". Monday was the first day of trading following the U.S. tariff announcement, as markets were closed on Friday for the Swiss National Day holiday. The U.S. is Switzerland's leading foreign market for watches, accounting for 16.8% of exports worth about 4.4 billion francs, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. While Richemont generated 32% of its full-year 2025 sales in the watches category, its exposure to the United States market should be just below 10% of overall sales, analysts at Jefferies said. Swatch, meanwhile, generated 18% of its 2024 sales in the United States, with its CEO saying the company had raised prices by 5% following the first tariffs announcement in April.
