
Doctors reveal the four words you should avoid saying at your next check-up
Experts across the nation are warning patients against uttering the phrase, 'Just one more thing' at the end of their appointment.
Dr Lisa Ravindra, a primary care physician at Rush University Medical Center, said: 'I've heard it many times. I find it's often things that patients are hesitant to bring up at first, and they're working themselves up to be brave enough to discuss it.
'But it's often the most important thing they came in for.'
According to Dr Ravindra, patients tend to inform their providers of serious symptoms, such as chest pain and difficulty breathing or side effects due to medications, at the end of their appointments - thinking that they are of no consequence.
However, the quick mention of this type of information can make a significant difference in their overall diagnosis, treatment and type of appointment as it can help them better understand the problem, she claims.
Additionally, she also noted that doctors tend to end up late to their other appointments when patients bring up deep discussion-worthy symptoms at the end of their own.
She told TIME: 'Should I dive into a conversation with them, and be late to see the next patient (and the one after that)? Or should she ask them to schedule another appointment to discuss whatever they brought up?
'Then you risk patients feeling dismissed,' she says. 'They made the decision to finally talk about it, and I'm asking them to talk about it another time.'
A 2018 Statista survey found that most physicians spent between 17 and 24 minutes with each patient during the day - a major reason for patient dissatisfaction.
Researchers noted that most US doctors saw between 11 and 20 patients each day - which Dr Ravindra claims can make it difficult for her to give ample time to each patient.
British doctors, meanwhile, cram in 25 to 40 patients on average a day, while in the European Union, doctors see no more than 25 patients per day to ensure sustainable practice and quality care.
Furthermore, Dr Melinda Steele, a primary care physician in California, added: 'The "just one more thing" scenario happens all the time.
'Doctors are like ducks: We're calm and collected on the surface, but we're moving it under the water.
'We're getting blasted from all different directions, having to triage things, go through messages and labs, and see patients in clinic. It's better to not be surprised by a doozy when you're trying to get out the door.'
According to both experts, it is better for patients to make a list of all their symptoms and problems beforehand.
Dr Steele explained: 'A lot of people come to the doctor's office and they're nervous and forget what they want to bring up, so writing it down can offload some of that and make sure the issues are actually addressed.
'If you have symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, or dizziness, move them to the top of the list and mention them up front.'
She also recommends patients book appointments and seek out physicians as soon as they notice a symptom rather than wait and complain about multiple ailments at once.
Dr Steele told the magazine: 'It's pretty common for people to come in with a big list of issues, because they feel like there needs to be enough to justify taking time off work.
'Reaching out to your doctor earlier and tackling issues earlier can definitely prevent complications and ensure appointments are as seamless and satisfying as possible.'

You can use resistance bands or tubes to build strength. Or try pushups and pullups — old standbys that create muscle overload by using your own body weight. These four basic options for strength training present fitness possibilities for young or old or beginners. And they offer flexibility for use in the gym, your home or in a hotel room during travel. You'll probably wind up using a combination of the four, and they all have their pros and cons. They are appropriate for all ages and can be augmented with aerobic exercises like walking or running — or even climbing stairs. Let's let Dr. Rafael Escamilla, a biomechanist and physical therapist at Sacramento State University in California, and Dr. Michael Stone, a sports scientist at East Tennessee State University, walk us through the possibilities and their pluses and minuses, depending on your age, your motivation and your goals. Both are internationally recognized experts, college professors and former competitive weightlifters who still work out almost daily. Both suggest a medical check if you're just starting out and the guidance of a trainer at the beginning. Most suggest strength training two or three times per week. Dumbbells and barbells We're talking primarily about dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells and medicine balls. 'If you're relatively healthy, free weights are the way to go,' Stone told The Associated Press. 'They have more carryover to daily life — to lifting things. It transfers better. In daily life you pick up your grandchildren, pick up the groceries.' Free weights are also more versatile, accommodating natural movements that a machine will not allow. Free weights require the user to focus on balance, activating additional muscle groups than simply those targeted. Stone reminded that you need not use much weight. Just a pound, or a kilo or two, will do it. Start slowly and increase the weight gradually. 'I would also strongly suggest that if you've never lifted weights before, go find somebody who knows something about it,' Stone added. Weight machines This is probably the least intimidating option for the beginner. The machines offer stability and a fixed pattern of movement and they give beginners a chance to get familiar with the movements involved in strength training. 'Machines are a good way to start,' Escamilla told The Associated Press. 'They're safe and easy and you don't need a lot of technique or skill to do them.' Escamilla pointed out they also reduce the risk of injury, isolate muscles and help build confidence as you're starting out. The machines also are more time effective. 'Start here and then you can gravitate to free weight and other options,' Escamilla said. Resistance bands and tubes These are the most portable options. They can help to build muscle, improve flexibility and balance, and avoid the need to sign up for a gym membership. The bands or tubes are made of elastic and come in a variety of sizes and resistance levels — how far they stretch and how difficult it is to stretch them. Bands also come in fabric models. 'They take up no room to pack and they're supercheap,' Escamilla said. 'You can take them with you as you travel — just throw them in your suitcase.' You can use them to work your legs, arms, back, chest and shoulders and other muscle groups. They can be used in many configurations and may be less intimidating than dumbbells or barbells. 'The bands won't cut it for a 300-pound (140-kilo) football player,' Escamilla added. 'But they're good for your average person — your average adult.' Bodyweight resistance The idea with every weight-resistance exercise is to overload the muscles. Your own bodyweight can be used to do this. Exercises like pushups, pullups, squats, lunges and planks and others fall into this category. 'Your body weight can be used as a form of resistance,' Escamilla said. 'You can get a good workout doing these and you need almost no equipment.' No matter the option, Stone emphasized the need to vary your exercises — both the types and the number of repetitions. You can also vary locations, perhaps choosing an outdoor gym for your workouts. Outdoor gyms are often found on beaches like the one at the popular Barceloneta beach in Barcelona, Spain. 'You can't do the same number of sets and repetitions all the time and expect to get better results," Stone said. 'You get stale and monotony can set in.'

First doctors graduate after completing new part-time course
A group of medical students have become the first cohort of doctors to qualify by studying new graduates formally secured their qualification at the University of Edinburgh after completing the HCP-Med for Healthcare Professionals up in 2018, the five-year scheme encourages professionals in other areas of healthcare to consider studying to become has a strong emphasis on GP placements in the hope of boosting the numbers of general practitioners entering Scotland's NHS. The university said it was "proud" to be the first to produce graduates, numbering 20 in total, from the course. Edinburgh medical course offers 'new pathway' Dr Jen Kennedy, the HCP-MED programme director, said: "We have lots of incredibly talented people working within the NHS in Scotland who may have missed the traditional route to become doctors. "By creating this new pathway and widening access to medical degrees, we are able to nurture their talent and use their valuable experience to enhance the healthcare workforce".Prof David Kluth, head of Edinburgh Medical School, said he as proud that Edinburgh was the first university in the UK to offer the programme. He added: "The students on this programme bring with them a rich diversity of backgrounds, experiences and skills - from prior careers to lived experience of the communities they will serve. "This breadth of talent and perspective is vital in building a more inclusive, adaptable, and effective medical workforce for Scotland."

How South Florida's soaring living costs are pricing out retirees
A number of senior citizens in South Florida are experiencing homelessness, forcing them to sleep inside their cars. Soaring rents and a lack of affordable housing has forced some of those in the Sunshine State to spend their twilight years sleeping rough. Carolyn Simon is one of those, having resorted to sleeping upright in the front seat of her car for two months due to not being able to afford a place to live. She spoke with WSVN about her troubles in May, revealing she is reliant on social security for money and parks up inside well-lit parking to catch some shuteye. Demonstrating her sleeping stance to the outlet, the 78-year-old said: 'Since I've been here, I sleep here in this seat, scrunched down. 'My ankles and legs are swollen from having to sit all the time. I buy jug water, it's cheaper. And I eat one meal a day, for $2.02, and then I get a free senior drink.' Carolyn resorted to showering at a nearby gym thanks to her Medicare plan which gets her inside the facility for free. She added: 'It can happen to anyone. Don't think it can't, because I never thought about it.' In 2019, the amount of people aged 65 and over accounted for almost eight percent of the homeless population in Miami-Dade County, the Homeless Trust said. That number had nearly doubled to a shocking 14 percent in 2024, with projections indicating it could hit 22 percent by the year 2030. In January of this year, the Department of Housing and Urban Development said in a report that homelessness had reached a record high in 2024. Over 770,000 had experienced homeless on a single night in 2024, an increase of around 18 percent compared to 2023. The report found that 146,000 found that older adults had experienced homelessness, an increase of six percent. Maria Navarro, another elderly Florida resident like Carolyn, spoke with CBS News last October, revealing how despite working seven days a week, she still has to sleep in her car. She told the outlet it is very depressing at times and that instead of enjoying retirement she uses a dumpster area to shower using buckets. Ron Book, Chairman of the Miami-Dade Homeless Trust, said homeless seniors are among the most vulnerable. He told the outlet: 'The face of homelessness has changed. I want people in our community to think about their mothers, and their grandmothers, and their grandfathers being homeless for the first time. After Carolyn's story was aired last month, local leaders banded together to help her find accommodation.
