Crypto startups raise $2.6bn in July: Here are the winners

Yahoo4 days ago
Crypto startups are rolling in it.
In July, 65 crypto projects raised over $2.6 billion in new investments to grow their businesses, according to DefiLlama.
That brings the total amount raised by industry players to $13 billion so far this year, up from the $9.5 billion raised in total in 2024.
Pitchbook expects crypto startups to double that figure to $18 billion in 2025.
Here are the three crypto projects that raised the most money in July.
Pump.fun, $590 million
Pump.fun raised $590 million in an initial coin offering at the beginning of July to, as it boldly proclaimed, 'kill Facebook, TikTok, and Twitch' by transforming itself into a new type of social media platform.
At a glance, the controversial memecoin generator token sale seems a grand success. Pump.fun's ICO sold out in just 12 minutes, capping off one of the fastest and largest raises in recent crypto memory.
However, the project sold 2 billion fewer tokens than it had originally planned.
The project had previously said 150 billion PUMP tokens, out of a 330 billion total ICO allocation, would be offered to the public at $0.004 each.
That implied a $600 million raise. But the live dashboard confirms just 148 billion tokens were sold, pulling in $590 million — about 98% of the originally stated public allocation.
The sale came in the same month as the platform is struggling with plummeting revenue amid a memecoin slump and an increasingly crowded market.
And those traditional social media platforms? Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, saw its stock price surge 11% this week, giving it a market cap of just under $2 trillion, about half of the entire cryptocurrency market.
OSL Group, $300 million
Hong Kong-based OSL Group said it has secured $300 million in equity financing.
'The funding will accelerate our global buildout — particularly in regulated payment infrastructure and access points,' Ivan Wong, CFO at OSL Group, said in a statement.
Upexi, $200 million
Upexi, a Solana treasury company, announced a $200 million deal led by Big Brain Holdings at the beginning of July.
The deal took the form of a convertible note offering, and the proceeds will be used to buy more Solana, the company said.
Upexi is part of a wave of crypto treasury companies that have cropped up over the past year. While the bulk of them copy Michael Saylor's Bitcoin-buying strategy, many are also allocating resources to buying altcoins.

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong Has A 7-Hour Playlist With One Song On Repeat: 'Helps Me Do Deep Focused Work'

Benzinga and Yahoo Finance LLC may earn commission or revenue on some items through the links below. Many investors and entrepreneurs listen to music throughout their daily routines. Coinbase Global Inc (NASDAQ:COIN) CEO Brian Armstrong sometimes listens to the same song over and over, thanks to a Spotify Technology (NYSE:SPOT) playlist. How is COIN trading now? Track it here. What Happened: Armstrong, who once slept in the Coinbase office during the early days, has helped transform the cryptocurrency trading platform company into one of the largest in the sector today. Coinbase is often looked to as a leader in the cryptocurrency sector and a soaring price for Bitcoin over the last year has put companies such as Coinbase in the spotlight again. Armstrong is among the cryptocurrency executives helping push regulations for the sector in the U.S. Trending: The same firms that backed Uber, Venmo and eBay are investing in this pre-IPO company disrupting a $1.8T market — One of the secret weapons for Armstrong may be his listening habits. A leak of Spotify playlists revealed the Coinbase CEO has a playlist that contains the same song 60 times. "From the Spotify leak — I've been exposed for having a 7-hour-long playlist with only one song on it. It helps me do deep focused work, don't ask me why," Armstrong tweeted. The Coinbase CEO appears to have confirmed the playlist exists and is used for his key work. The song used in Armstrong's playlist is "Long Way Home" from music producer and DJ Gareth Emery. The song comes in at 7 minutes 25 second long, making the playlist around 7.5 hours long. Emery took to social media to show his appreciation for Armstrong. "I love this! Back when I wrote it, everyone thought 7 minutes was way too long and it needed cutting down — glad I kept it exactly as it was, and love seeing that it's still out there doing good in the world!" Emery It's Important: The Panama Playlists provides top song picks for playlists made by CEOs and politicians. Some names on the list, such as Armstrong, have confirmed the leak as true. The report has put a spotlight on Spotify's privacy settings that allow users to have their playlists made public for friends and others. Armstrong has 10 public playlists according to the report. Other jams loved by the Coinbase CEO include: "Two Suns In The Sky" by Davi "Greatest Love of All" by Whitney Houston "SOL" by Pryda "Wait For It" by the Original Broadway cast of Hamilton "Shallow" by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper When it comes to listening habits, there could have been more embarrassing song choices and playlist titles than the ones that belong to Armstrong. For those bullish on Bitcoin, perhaps the 7:25 'Long Way Home' can keep some rallies going in the future. Two Chinese nationals charged for illegally shipping Nvidia AI chips to China

Two Chinese nationals in California have been arrested and charged with the illegal shipment of tens of millions of dollars' worth of AI chips, the Department of Justice said Tuesday. Chuan Geng, 28, and Shiwei Yang, 28, exported the sensitive chips and other technology to China from October 2022 through July 2025 without obtaining the required licenses, the DOJ said, citing an affidavit filed with the complaint. The illicit shipments included Nvidia's H100 general processing units, according to the affidavit seen by Reuters. The H100 is amongst the U.S. chipmaker's most cutting-edge chips used in artificial intelligence allocations. The Department of Commerce has placed such chips under export controls since 2022 as part of broader efforts by the U.S. to restrict China's access to the most advanced semiconductor technology. This case demonstrates that smuggling is a "nonstarter," Nvidia told CNBC. "We primarily sell our products to well-known partners, including OEMs, who help us ensure that all sales comply with U.S. export control rules." "Even relatively small exporters and shipments are subject to thorough review and scrutiny, and any diverted products would have no service, support, or updates," the chipmaker added. Geng and Yang's California-based company, ALX Solutions, had been founded shortly after the U.S. chip controls first came into place. According to the DOJ, law enforcement searched ALX Solutions' office and seized the phones belonging to Geng and Yang, which revealed incriminating communications between the defendants, including communications about evading U.S. export laws by shipping the export-controlled chips to China through Malaysia. The review also showed that in December 2024, ALX Solutions made over 20 shipments from the U.S. to shipping and freight-forwarding companies in Singapore and Malaysia, which the DOJ said are commonly used as transshipment points to conceal illicit shipments to China. ALX Solutions did not appear to have been paid by entities they purportedly exported goods to, instead receiving numerous payments from companies based in Hong Kong and China. The U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Industry and Security and the FBI are continuing to investigate the matter. The smuggling of advanced microchips has become a growing concern in Washington. According to a report from the Financial Times last month, at least $1 billion worth of Nvidia's chips entered China after Donald Trump tightened chip export controls earlier this year. In response to the report, Nvidia had said that data centers built with smuggled chips were a "losing proposition" and that it does not support unauthorized products.
