Hong Kong fans queue for opening of Cristiano Ronaldo exhibition
Visitors at the opening of the 'CR7 LIFE Museum Hong Kong' at a luxury shopping mall posed next to life-sized statues of the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player, including one in mid-air celebration and another in traditional Saudi dress.
'Cristiano Ronaldo is my idol... he's special,' said 14-year-old Alvin Lai, who was first in a queue of more than 100 people.
'He's the most hardworking person out there,' said university student Henry Singh.
'He's 40 years old and still going very strong.'
Ronaldo signed a new two-year contract with Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr last month, calling it a 'new chapter' in an Instagram post.
Al Nassr are due to play in a pre-season tournament in Hong Kong next month.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo will be greeting fans at the museum 'very soon', said Tomas Froes, a representative of the footballer's family office.
The 12,000 square feet (1,110 square metres) exhibition sends a 'strong message for everyone to achieve their dreams', Froes told AFP.
Organisers have said the Hong Kong exhibition will run for a year before heading to mainland China. – AFP

National body willing to lend Zii Jia a helping hand
PETALING JAYA: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) are open to helping independent men's singles shuttler Lee Zii Jia ( pic ). Zii Jia posted a series of cryptic images on his Instagram five days ago which included a stitched-up figure holding a blood-stained needle, raising concern about his mental wellbeing. While the National Sports Council (NSC) have allayed fears that the 27-year-old was suffering from mental or personal problems after contacting Team LZJ, BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh said that the national body were willing to extend a helping hand if Zii Jia needed it. 'As the badminton governing body in Malaysia, we are concerned about all players. We know that many have contacted Zii Jia to ask about his posts including NSC,' said Kenny at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara yesterday. 'If Zii Jia needs help and support, we are willing to help him if we have the expertise.' Zii Jia has had a difficult year, only managing to compete in the Orleans Masters and All-England in Match so far after suffering a right ankle ligament injury during the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou last December. The Paris Olympics bronze medallist lost to Ireland's Nhat Nguyen in the Orleans Masters last eight and went down to Hong Kong's Angus Ng Ka Long in the All-England first round. Zii Jia later said that he had rushed his comeback after aggravating his injury. He planned to make his return in the US Open last month but had to delay his comeback, citing he had not fully recovered. Zii Jia has also withdrawn from the Japan Open from July 15-20 in Tokyo and it's still unknown when he will return to competitions. Meanwhile, another men's singles player Ng Tze Yong 's surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee has been successful. Tze Yong underwent the operation at Aspetar Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Hospital in Doha on Monday and will now go through about four weeks of rehabilitation there before returning to Malaysia to continue his recovery. 'Surgery done and feeling love from the incredible staff, especially those from Malaysia,' said Tze Yong via Instagram. 'Big thanks to BAM and National Sports Institute (NSI) for the ultimate support throughout this process. Now, it's time to lock in and do the real work.'

France wildfire shuts down Marseille airport, halts trains
MARSEILLE – A wildfire in southern France on Tuesday forced Marseille airport to close and interrupted train traffic as the blaze spread rapidly to the edges of the city. Several forest fires have raged in recent days in southern France, fanning out at speed due to wind and parched vegetation after a heatwave. Scientists say human-induced climate change is increasing the intensity, length and frequency of extreme heat that fuels forest fires. The fire started in a vehicle in the area of Pennes-Mirabeau to the north of Marseille, on the road to the airport, roaring across 700 hectares (1,700 acres) by the evening, firefighters said. It sent plumes of acrid smoke billowing into the sky, causing the airport to close its runways shortly after midday (1000 GMT), a spokesman for the Marseille Provence airport said. The spokesman later said that the airport would partially reopen at around 9:30 pm and that 54 flights had been cancelled and another 14 redirected. The website of the SNCF national rail operator showed more than a dozen train trips had been cancelled in and out of the city. It said rail travel to and from Marseille would remain "highly affected" on Wednesday. Marseille mayor Benoît Payan on X warned residents the fire was now "at the doors of Marseille", urging inhabitants in the north of the city to refrain from taking to the roads to leave way for rescue services. The mayor of Pennes-Mirabeau said two housing estates had been evacuated and firefighters had positioned themselves outside a retirement home to fight off approaching flames. The Marseille Provence airport is the country's fourth after Charles-de-Gaulle and Orly outside Paris, and Nice. The fire near Marseille is just the latest to hit France in recent days. To the west along the Mediterranean coast, near the city of Narbonne, more than 1,000 firefighters from around the country were seeking to contain another blaze. It had crept across 2,000 hectares (4,900 acres) of trees since starting on the property of a winery on Monday afternoon, emergency services said. In the village of Prat-de-Cest on Tuesday morning, trees were blackened or still on fire. As she watched fire trucks drive to and fro, retiree Martine Bou recounted fleeing her home with her cats, tortoises and dog on Monday afternoon before returning. But her husband, Frédéric, stayed all night to hose down the great pines on the other side of the road so the fire would not engulf their home. "I've never seen anything like it. I have never lived next to such an enormous fire," he told AFP, reporting flames dozens of metres (more than a hundred feet) high. The fire near Narbonne caused authorities to close the A9 motorway to Spain, but on Tuesday morning they said they were progressively reopening it to traffic.
