Starbucks faces intense competition in China, its second-largest market after the United States, where consumers are becoming more frugal with their spending. Domestic competitors like Luckin Coffee, which draws clients with cashierless locations and cups as cheap as 8.8 to 9.9 yuan ($1.23 to $1.38), pose serious threats to Starbucks.
Currently, Luckin Coffee is flourishing in the United States, launching two stores in Manhattan, New York City.
According to the brand's Instagram page, the company offered complimentary tote bags to the first 100 clients as part of special promotions to commemorate the launch of the stores on Monday.
While Luckin Coffee's U.S. opening day is over, New Yorkers can still look forward to a unique treat at the two locations: drinks that cost $1.99. A person can download and order drinks through the Luckin Coffee app in order to take advantage of the offer on the first beverage order.
Like Starbucks, Luckin Coffee serves a variety of beverages in addition to hot or iced coffee, such as frappes, matcha, specialty lattes, and refreshers. The company also sells cold brew in a variety of flavors, including pineapple, blood orange, coconut, and raspberry.

With more than 22,000 outlets since its establishment in 2017, Luckin Coffee has emerged as one of China's fastest-growing coffee businesses. Singapore is home to its stores as well.
The chain's mobile app allows its locations in China to function without cashiers, enabling customers to order their drinks by paying online. This isn't the case with the new Manhattan outlets, though, as cashless establishments aren't allowed in NYC till 2020.
According to Luckin, their coffee beans are sourced directly from the best coffee-producing locations, and the coffee is chosen from over 180 blending formulas that closely fit consumer preferences.
Starbucks participated in the most recent battle in China over low rates for coffee earlier this month. The company announced that it would make dozens of its products, including non-coffee drinks like the Frappuccino, more "accessible" in a post on its Weixin social media account. Prices for some drinks will start at just 23 yuan ($3.21). Starbucks alters menu for the summer
Starbucks recently revealed some modifications to its summer menu in the United States. The Strawberry Matcha, Brown Sugar, and Salted Caramel Mocha are new frappuccinos that will be available in stores in July, with a layer of cold foam on top.

Surprise $400 checks rolling out to millions of Americans — no zip code needed to cash in

Millions of New York residents will soon receive surprise inflation relief checks worth up to $400—with no zip code or application needed to qualify. This major financial support initiative, announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, is part of New York State's newly approved 2025–2026 budget. In a bid to combat rising living costs and ease financial pressure on households, the state is automatically issuing these one-time inflation refund checks to more than 8.2 million residents. The best part? No sign-up forms, no regional restrictions, and no zip code requirements. If you're eligible, your check is coming—simple as that. These $400 checks are part of a state-funded relief package, designed to help New Yorkers cope with ongoing inflation, rising rent, grocery bills, and utility costs. The initiative is a cornerstone of Governor Hochul's 2025–26 budget, reflecting the administration's focus on direct aid to working-class and middle-income families. The New York Inflation Refund Program ensures that qualifying residents receive up to $400 per household, depending on their income and filing status. Unlike federal stimulus checks that were previously disbursed by income tiers or COVID relief plans, these payments are automatic and require no action from recipients. Who Is Eligible for the $400 Inflation Relief Payment? To receive a check, you must have filed a 2023 New York State income tax return (Form IT-201) . The state is using 2023 tax data to determine eligibility and refund amounts. Live Events Here are the basic eligibility criteria: Filed 2023 NY State tax return Not claimed as a dependent on another person's return Meet the income threshold for your filing status Income Thresholds and Refund Amounts: Filing Status Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) Maximum Refund Amount Single Up to $75,000 $200 Single $75,001 – $150,000 $150 Married Filing Jointly / Widowed Up to $150,000 $400 Married Filing Jointly / Widowed $150,001 – $300,000 $300 If your income exceeds these limits, you won't receive a refund under this specific initiative. When Will the $400 Checks Be Sent? According to state officials, the checks will start going out by mid-October 2025, with deliveries continuing through November 2025. Because of the large number of eligible recipients—over 8 million—the mailings will be staggered. Important Note: There's no specific order by zip code, last name, or region. Unlike some government programs that roll out aid by area or application date, this one is completely automatic and statewide. Residents are encouraged to check their mail regularly during the fall and to ensure their address is up to date with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance. No Zip Code Needed – What Does That Mean? The phrase 'no zip code needed to cash in' simply means that the checks are not being issued based on geographic location. In the past, some relief programs were rolled out in stages depending on where you lived. That's not the case here. All qualified New Yorkers, regardless of where they live—from New York City to Buffalo, Albany, Syracuse, and everywhere in between—will get their check at the same time as the system allows, without prioritizing one zip code over another. So, whether you're in Queens (11413) or Saratoga Springs (12866), you're equally in line. How Will the Checks Be Delivered? The checks will be sent via regular U.S. Postal Service mail. The envelope will likely come from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, so don't toss out any government-looking mail during the October–November delivery window. Some residents may also receive direct deposit if that's how they received their tax refund in 2023. However, the majority will get physical checks. No Application or Paperwork Needed One of the biggest advantages of this program is that you don't need to apply. If you qualified based on your 2023 income tax filing, the system will automatically issue your refund check. There's no paperwork, no re-certification, and no website form to fill out. Just make sure: You filed your 2023 NY income tax return Your mailing address is up to date You were not claimed as a dependent If all three apply, you're set. Why Is New York Issuing These Refund Checks? This refund is part of a broader response to rising costs across the state. From housing to groceries, gas to healthcare, inflation has stretched household budgets thin. The state government has received strong pressure to act. Governor Hochul emphasized that the refund is part of a 'proactive strategy to bring immediate relief' to those most impacted by inflation, especially working families, the elderly, and renters. This initiative also allows the state to reinvest surplus funds from previous fiscal years into direct financial support, as opposed to long-term infrastructure or administrative programs. Watch Out for Scams Whenever relief money is involved, scammers follow. Be cautious of: Emails, texts, or phone calls asking you to 'claim' your refund. Requests for your Social Security number or bank info. Websites asking for a 'processing fee' to access the $400 check. Remember: You do NOT need to do anything to receive your inflation refund. If you're eligible, it will come automatically. Any request for action is a red flag. What to Do If You Don't Receive Your Check If you believe you're eligible but haven't received a check by December 1, 2025, follow these steps: Visit the official NY Tax Department website – Look for 'Inflation Refund' updates or FAQ section. Call the NY State Tax Refund Helpline at 1‑800‑225‑5829 (if available). Double-check your 2023 tax return status to ensure it was processed correctly. A Welcome Relief for Millions This surprise round of $400 checks for New Yorkers is a refreshing example of state-led inflation relief in action. With no zip code restrictions and no application required, it ensures that millions of families get timely financial support without jumping through bureaucratic hoops. If you're one of the 8.2 million New Yorkers who qualify, this fall could bring some much-needed budget relief—automatically. New York inflation refund checks up to $400 begin rolling out in October 2025. No zip code, no paperwork, no application needed. Based on 2023 state income tax filing and household income. Checks will continue mailing through November. Eligible residents will receive them automatically by mail or direct deposit. FAQs: Q1: Who qualifies for the New York $400 inflation refund checks? Anyone who filed a 2023 NY State tax return and meets income limits can get it automatically. Q2: Do I need my zip code to get the $400 inflation check? No zip code is needed—the checks are mailed automatically to all eligible New Yorkers.

From Tea To Espresso: Coffee Culture Grows In Tea-Loving Nepal

Coffee hasn't always been an easy sell in Nepal. The Himalayan country is a major tea producer, as well as a major consumer. When people greet each other in the morning, they don't ask "how are you." They say "have you had your tea?" Tea - usually served as a sweet, milky beverage in a piping hot glass tumbler - is as much a part of Nepal's culture as rice, a constant presence at homes, meetings and social gatherings. But a growing number of Nepalis are warming up to coffee, as trendy cafes spring up street corners in cities and towns across the country. One cafe in the capital, Kathmandu, is widely seen as the pioneer. Gagan Pradhan began Himalayan Java as a single cafe in an alley, and it's grown to a chain with 84 locations in the country. Pradhan estimates there are around 7,000 cafes across the country, although so far international brands like Starbucks aren't in Nepal. "There are lot of tea shops throughout the nation, but the kind of set up they have is still kind of old fashioned," Pradhan said. "I think with investors and people like us, when it comes to coffee shop we are more serious not only with machines, we are serious with everything like the lighting, the set up, the furnishings, the location." Pradhan said tea shops usually offer just black tea or tea with milk, whereas a typical coffee menu has 10-15 hot beverages and about 10-15 cold beverages, he said. Pradhan said it's an appealing business because the initial investment to open a cafe is very low, they're clean and simple enough for a single to family to run, and customers are willing to pay more for coffee. Several of eastern Nepal's tea plantations in the mountains of east Nepal, famous for the tea, are joined by coffee plantations now. Nepal is part of a regional trend. Coffee consumption has soared across traditionally tea-drinking countries in Asia as members of growing middle classes seek out novel flavors and adopt international trends. Coffee is a premium drink in Nepal: it costs about $2 at Himalayan Java, which is enough to buy a meal at a local cafe in Kathmandu, or five cups of tea. Still, cafes bustle with officers workers on breaks and students looking for places to study. "I think the idea of drinking coffee (in Nepal) was first triggered with people thinking it would elevate their standard of living, but then once they tasted coffee many people just liked it and continued to drink it," said Deep Singh Bandari, a social worker who is a regular visitor to the coffee cafes. Most of the coffee drunk in Nepal is imported, but in the country's famous eastern tea-growing regions coffee plantations are springing up. According to Nepal's National Tea and Coffee Development Board, about 400 tons of coffee was produced in fiscal year 2021-22, the most recent for which data is available. That's a drop in the percolator compared to the 26,000 tons of tea produced the same year, but the board predicts rapid growth. "Both young and old people in Nepal just love coffee, and the number of coffee drinkers is growing every day. This trend is just going to grow," said Pradhan. Hyderabad gets first Starbucks experiential coffee store

Starbucks has just opened its first-ever experiential store in Hyderabad. This is South India's first cafe in the buzzy Khajaguda neighbourhood of Hyderabad — a space designed not just for sipping coffee, but for understanding, savouring, and interacting with it. Inside, the store that can seat around 50 people is divided into two distinct seating zones and houses an Espresso Zone and Brew Bar. Here, you can chat with in-house baristas, observe the meticulous brewing process, and even get a crash course in what goes into your daily cup — from grind to pour. But the real magic lies in the menu. This is not your regular line-up of lattes and frappes. Instead, you will find a curated range of specialty beverages that celebrate Indian ingredients: jaggery, tamarind, chilli, coconut, and even shikanji. Highlights include the cinnamon jaggery latte, Malabar coconut cream latte, a red peru and kanthari chilli cold brew, and a tamarind shikanji cold brew. There is also a selection of beans to explore. The store offers five exclusive espresso options and 13 whole-bean variants sourced from coffee-growing regions including India, Kenya, Sumatra and Latin America. 'We've always aimed to bring beans from around the world,' says Vibhor Mishra, Starbucks' Coffee Ambassador for APAC and China. 'Because in the world of coffee, geography is flavour. We even have an India States blend — grown, sourced, and roasted in India.' Some of the other unique options include House Blend, French Roast and Papua New Guinea, unavailable at most other outlets. The experiential store is also home to Starbucks' Black Eagle, a semi-automated machine that makes your cup right in front of you. 'Grinding, tamping, dosing, it all happens in full view,' says Vibhor. Of course, we had to taste what the buzz was about. First up: the red peru and kanthari chilli cold brew. A word of caution: this is not for die-hard caffeine seekers. The ice load dilutes the intensity, and while the slice of guava adds an aromatic touch, it does not bring much sweetness. You will catch the chilli only as a faint tingle at the back of your throat. That said, the tamarind red peru shikanji cold brew could win fans of bold, tangy, chaat-inspired flavours. Vibhor assured us that these cold brews can be customised for less ice, something we would recommend for those who want their coffee to speak louder. The winner is the Malabar coconut cream latte. Smooth, creamy, and with just the right hint of coconut — like the malai from a rich curry meets a fine espresso. Whether you are a curious sipper or a brewing purist, this new Starbucks outpost offers a full-bodied experience.
