1,935 challans a day: CCTV surveillance lays bare anarchy on Mohali roads
In just 95 days, from March 6 to June 9, as many as 1,83,825 e-challans have been issued through CCTV surveillance — a startling 1,935 a day, reflecting widespread disregard for traffic laws.
What's more: the data is from CCTV monitoring at only 17 intersections, while the rest of the city hasn't even been covered yet, including Airport Road, a major traffic lifeline.
Earlier, in the absence of CCTVs keeping a watch, such violations went unchecked due to inadequate staff in the Mohali traffic wing, resulting in accidents and traffic chaos.
But with 488 high-definition cameras now active, up from 405 initially, the true extent of traffic indiscipline has been laid bare.
Riding without a helmet is the most common offence, with 1,08,561 challans, translating to ₹10.85 crore in fines. Pillion riders without helmets come next, with 28,361 challans and ₹2.83 crore in penalties. Red-light violations account for the third-highest challans, numbered at 15,791, not only disrupting the flow of traffic but also increasing the risk of collisions at busy intersections.
Superintendent of police (Traffic) Navneet Singh Mahal said the camera-based enforcement was designed not to punish but to protect. 'Traffic rules are for the safety of people. Though we have seen improvement and more people are following traffic regulations, violators are still being challaned. The public must realise that these efforts are aimed at creating a safer and more disciplined Mohali.'
88% challans not settled
Another challenge facing the traffic police is the high rate of unsettled challans. Of the 1,83,825 e-challans issued till June 9, only a little over 20,000 have been cleared by traffic violators, resulting in collection of ₹1.7 crore as fines. The backlog is massive, with 1,62,918 challans (88%) still pending, totalling an estimated ₹16.3 crore in unpaid fines.
The City Surveillance and Traffic Management System in Mohali, spearheaded by the Punjab Police Housing Corporation, will eventually be expanded to 20 intersections.
The cameras are monitored at the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) set up at the Sohana police station, where 13 operators keep round-the-clock vigil on violators and also help in tracing criminals.

TGRERA Orders Refund with Interest and Seeks Probe into Project Promoters TGRERA, in its findings, observed that the respondent had no legal title or authority over the land and that his conduct constituted a violation of Sections 11(4)(a) and 12 of the Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Act, 2016. Puri stampede: Official hears testimonies of more witnesses
Bhubaneswar: Development commissioner-cum-additional chief secretary Anu Garg, who is probing the stampede incident near Gundicha Temple in Puri that claimed the lives of three devotees on June 29 during Rath Yatra, heard the testimonials of more witnesses on Wednesday. The hearing, conducted at the special circuit house in Puri, was attended by 42 officials of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration, police personnel and functionaries from the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC). These individuals, who were on duty during the unfortunate event, provided their accounts and explanations regarding the circumstances that led to the stampede, a govt statement read. The inquiry aims to uncover the sequence of events and identify any lapses in crowd management and safety protocols. The govt has assured that the investigation will be thorough and transparent, with further hearings set to continue.

Bike-borne men abduct woman, assault male friend and flee with their car in Mohali
The Mohali police on Sunday announced the arrests of two security guards and two others who allegedly abducted a woman and her male friend and fled in the victims' car. As per the woman's police complaint, when she was returning from Best Tech Mall in Mohali after watching a movie with her friend on the night of July 11–12, four bike-borne men, dressed in Nihangs' attire, intercepted their car near the Lakhnour turn. The accused allegedly abducted both of them but abandoned the man 100 m away after assaulting him. They allegedly sped away with the woman, molested her, and pushed her out of the car 30 minutes later, before escaping towards Ambala. According to Senior Superintendent of Police Harmandeep Singh Hans said the stolen vehicle was recovered from the arrested men, identified as Shamsher Singh, who hails from Kalanaur in Gurdaspur; Satnam Singh, a cab driver from Ludhiana; Nirmal Singh, a security guard from Nawanshahr; and Chander Mohan alias Jaildar, a security guard from Jammu. The police arrested the accused from Chanarthal village after they received a confidential tip-off and deployed multiple teams to nab the four men. They traced the stolen vehicle after analysing CCTV footage. SSP Hans stated, 'These accused may be involved in other criminal cases as well. Interrogation is underway, and more revelations are expected.' All four men stayed at a paying guest facility behind Gurdwara Singh Shaheedan at Sohana in Mohali, according to the police. The operation was led by SP (Operations) Talwinder Singh, SP (PBI) Deepika Singh, DSP (City-2) Harsimran Singh Bal, and DSP (Economic Offences) Rajesh, under whom Inspector Amandeep Singh (SHO, Sohana), Inspector Gabbar Singh, and Inspector Gagandeep carried out the investigation.
