Chelsea and Palmeiras paid tribute to Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva ahead of their Club World Cup quarter-final, with Pedro Neto appearing to fight back tears
Pedro Neto fought back tears as Chelsea paid tribute to Diogo Jota ahead of their Club World Cup match with Palmeiras. Jota, and his brother Andre Silva, passed away in a car crash on Thursday.
Neto, who was an international team-mate of Jota and also played with the Portugal star at Wolves, was visibly caught up with emotion as the teams held a minute's silence in Philadelphia. The Chelsea winger carried out a Blues shirt with the names of Diogo and Andre on the back before holding it with captain Enzo Fernandez as players gathered around the centre circle.

The 24-year-old was named in Chelsea's starting XI after Enzo Maresca previously indicated that Neto's involvement in the Club World Cup quarter-final would be up to the player. The attacker had missed training after discovering the news of his friend's passing in the build up to the game.

Speaking ahead of the Palmeiras match, Maresca said: "Pedro is very sad. Probably more than sad, but we are close to Pedro, to support him in this morning.
'It's completely Pedro's decision, I had a chat this morning we support him, any decision he takes is the right one, we will support him in any case. If on pitch tomorrow or not, we will support him.
"It's very sad day I struggle find words, it's very difficult, the feeling that you have is helpless in this situation. Only thing I can say is all my love for his family, a big tragedy."
Neto was not alone in playing through grief on Friday evening in the United States. Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo broke down in tears as tributes were paid ahead of Al Hilal's match against Fluminense.
Both ex-Wolves captain Neves and former Manchester City defender Cancelo had to be comforted by team-mates as a moment was taken to reflect on their international colleague. Neves was left sobbing with his head in his hands, while Cancelo wiped away tears sank down on his haunches.

Like Neto, the duo had the decision of whether to play placed in their own hands. Head coach Simone Inzaghi had given the pair the option to miss the game if they were not feeling up to it.
Neves penned a heartbreaking tribute to his close friend minutes before kick off, before deciding to play. He said: "Bug, wherever you are I know you will read this, we were never this lame and I may now regret it a little, but you know what you mean to me as much as I know what I am to you.
"More than a friendship, we're family, and we won't stop it just because now you decided to sign a contract a little further away from us! When I go to the selection, you'll still be next to me at the dinner table, on the bus, on the plane... you'll always be there with me as always.

"Let's keep laughing, making plans, sharing our life with each other. I'm going to make sure you're always present and I'll make sure that your loved ones never lack anything while you're there, far away but thinking of us, waiting for us.
"Life has brought us together and now it can't tear us apart. We've achieved some great things together, we still have a lot to go, I know we can. From today on, you will enter the field with me and we will follow our path together, on the stage where we met.

"Diogoal, you are my favourite lemonade!! Amo-te."
Away from the United States, hundreds gathered at the wake of Jota and his younger brother in Portugal on Friday. The funeral is to take place at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar in Sao Cosme at 10am on Saturday.
Manchester City's Bernardo Silva and Manchester United's Diogo Dalot were both among those to pay tribute in Portugal on Friday. A Liverpool contingent led by sporting director Richard Hughes was also present in addition to one of Jota's best friends in football, another ex-Wolves and Portugal star, Joao Moutinho.

Sunday's briefing: Football bids emotional farewell to Diogo Jota

On the field, defending champions England began their Euro 2025 campaign with a 2-1 defeat to France, while Wales were beaten 3-0 by the Netherlands. Chelsea's progress to the semi-finals of the Club World Cup has not all been plain sailing for boss Enzo Maresca. Liverpool say goodbye to Jota Joe Gomez, Arne Slot and Alexis MacAllister were among members of Liverpool's squad who attended the funeral of team-mate Diogo Jota (PA) Liverpool's squad were united in their grief as they said farewell to team-mate Diogo Jota at the forward's funeral in Portugal. A service for the 28-year-old father-of-three, who married his long-term partner Rute Cardoso almost a fortnight ago, and his brother Andre Silva was held at the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar church in their home town of Gondomar, near Porto, following their deaths in a car crash on Thursday. Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson each carried a floral tribute in the shape of a red shirt bearing the respective numbers of the two brothers. Head coach Arne Slot and the majority of the squad were present, as were Michael Edwards – the man who signed Jota from Wolves in 2020 when he was sporting director and is now chief executive of football for owners Fenway Sports Group – current sporting director Richard Hughes and head of physiotherapy Lee Nobes, who would have spent many hours with the player during his injury lay-offs. Many of Jota's former team-mates also attended, including ex-Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, who on Friday laid flowers at the makeshift shrine outside Anfield, James Milner, Thiago Alcantara, who signed in the same transfer window as Jota, Caoimhin Kelleher, Fabinho and former Wolves and Portugal team-mate Joao Moutinho. Title defence starts with defeat for England Alex Greenwood and Leah Williamson discuss where England went wrong in their defeat to France (Nick Potts/PA) Defending champions England were beaten by France in their Euro 2025 opener in Zurich, despite Keira Walsh's late consolation. Lauren James returned to Sarina Wiegman's starting XI and England thought they had struck first against the 2022 semi-finalists but had an early Alessia Russo effort chalked off after a VAR check. Instead Marie-Antoinette Katoto fired in a 36th-minute opener before Chelsea's Sandy Baltimore doubled France's lead three minutes later. Late substitutions sparked the Lionesses into life in the closing stages and Walsh gave them hope, halving the deficit in the 87th minute, but they could not salvage a point. In the other game in the group, Wales' major tournament debut ended in defeat as Vivianne Miedema scored her 100th international goal for the Netherlands. Unhappy players can go – Maresca Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has told players they can leave (Chris Szagola/AP) Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has told any player unhappy at the club they can leave. It is proving a busy summer at Stamford Bridge, with recent signings Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr now joined by Jamie Gittens, and Estevao Willian arriving before the new season. Raheem Sterling, Joao Felix, Axel Disasi and Ben Chilwell are not with the squad at the Club World Cup and are among those who could move on, while there has also been speculation Noni Madueke, Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson. Maresca said: 'My message to the players and to the club is that I want just players that are happy to be with us. The ones that are not happy, they are free to go. What's on today? 'Rarely been so angry': Bayern boss Kompany seethes over Musiala injury

ATLANTA, July 6 (Reuters) - Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany said he was furious after Jamal Musiala sustained a horrific injury during the first half of their Club World Cup quarter-final defeat by Paris St Germain in Atlanta on Saturday. The 22-year-old Germany international was injured in added time before the break following a collision in PSG's penalty area. As Musiala challenged defender William Pacho for the ball, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma inadvertently rolled over Musiala's left ankle, twisting it at an alarming angle and leaving him lying in agony on the pitch. "I've rarely been so angry at halftime, not against my players. There's many things in life that are important, much more important than this. But in the end, for these guys it's their life," Kompany told reporters after the 2-0 loss. "And someone like Jamal lives for this and he came back from a setback. And then it happens in the way it happens and you feel powerless... "When I'm sat here next to you now, the thing that gets my blood still boiling at the moment, it's not the result. I understand this is football. But it's the fact that it happened to someone who, one, enjoys the game so much but also very important for us." Bayern's medical team rushed on to the pitch as Donnarumma, visibly shaken, dropped to the ground with his hands on his head in disbelief at the severity of the injury. Players from both teams formed a circle around Musiala who was carried off the field on a stretcher. The German daily Bild reported he could be sidelined for up to five months. Bayern goalkeeper and captain Manuel Neuer said Donnarumma's dive was "risky" and that he had spoken to his Italian counterpart after the incident. "You just accept that your opponent might get injured. It could even be a teammate," he added. "So I went over to him and said: 'Don't you want – because it was half-time anyway – don't you want to go over there? Jamal is lying there, he'll probably stay in the hospital, he has a serious injury, and I think it's only right to go over there out of respect and wish him well and just say a little sorry.' "After that, he went over to Jamal... Fairness is always important, and I would have reacted differently." After the match, Donnarumma posted on Instagram: "All my prayers and well wishes are with you Jamal."

But my message to the players and to the club is that I want just players that are happy to be with us. "The ones that are not happy, they are free to go. It's not for Noni, it's for all the players we have. But again, Noni has been very good during the season and very good tonight." Rodrygo price tag Mirror Football understands that Arsenal will have to pay more than £70million to sign Real Madrid winger Rodrygo this summer. ‌ Rodrygo has been a bit part player for Real Madrid at the Club World Cup so far and could be sacrificed as Xabi Alonso looks to strengthen his attack. However, Arsenal could face stiff competition with both Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain interested in the 24-year-old. Gyokeres latest According to a report from Portuguese outlet Record, Viktor Gyokeres has rejected huge offers from two Saudi Arabian clubs as he is keen on a move to Arsenal. ‌ The Gunners are looking to sign a prolific goalscorer this summer and are working on deals for both Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko, with conflicting reports over which striker is their preferred option. Al-Hilal and Al-Qadsiyah, meanwhile, are said to have offered Gyokeres lucrative deals worth around £11m-a-year. However, Gyokeres has turned them down as he wants to join the Gunners.
