Google offers buyouts to more workers amid AI-driven tech upheaval and antitrust uncertainty

Time of India12-06-2025
Mountain View, California: Google has offered buyouts to another swath of its workforce across several key divisions in a fresh round of cost cutting coming ahead of a court decision that could order a breakup of its internet empire. The Mountain View, California, company confirmed the streamlining that was reported by several news outlets.
It is not clear how many employees are affected, but the offers were made to staff in Google's search, advertising, research and engineering units, according to The Wall Street Journal. Google employs most of the nearly 1,86,000 workers on the worldwide payroll of its parent company,
Alphabet Inc.
"Earlier this year, some of our teams introduced a voluntary exit programme with severance for US-based Googlers, and several more are now offering the programme to support our important work ahead," a Google spokesperson, Courtenay Mencini, said in a statement.
"A number of teams are also asking remote employees who live near an office to return to a hybrid work schedule in order to bring folks more together in-person," Mencini said.

search engine was declared an illegal monopoly as part of nearly five-year-old case by the US Justice Department. The company is also awaiting remedy action in another antitrust case involving its digital ad network.
US District Judge Amit Mehta is weighing a government proposal seeking to ban Google paying more than USD 26 billon annually to Apple and other technology companies to lock in its search engine as the go-to place for online information, require it to share data with rivals and force a sale of its popular Chrome browser. The judge is expected to rule before Labour Day, clearing the way for Google to pursue its plan to appeal last year's decision that labelled its search engine as a monopoly.
The proposed dismantling coincides with ongoing efforts by the Justice Department to force Google to part with some of the technology powering the company's digital ad network after a federal judge ruled that its digital ad network has been improperly abusing its market power to stifle competition to the detriment of online publishers.
Like several of its peers in Big Tech, Google has been periodically reducing its headcount since 2023 as the industry began to backtrack from the hiring spree that was triggered during pandemic lockdowns that spurred feverish demand for digital services.
Google began its post-pandemic retrenchment by laying off 12,000 workers in early 2023 and since then as been trimming some divisions to help bolster its profits while ramping up its spending on artificial intelligence - a technology driving an upheaval that is starting to transform its search engine into a more conversational answer engine. India-Russia oil trade: Rs 5.9 lakh crore trade at risk after US' ultimatum, if Trump cuts India off from Russian oil, Putin may hit back with...

Putin is true friend of India due to..., it helped at every step in making of..... but what is China connection? India is the world's third-largest oil importer and since 2022, it has become the top buyer of Russian oil. India buys up to 2 million barrels of oil from Russia every day. That's about 2 per cent of the world's total oil supply. China and Turkey are also among the biggest buyers of Russian oil. Putin may hit back by shutting down the CPC pipeline According to experts at JP Morgan, India plays a very important role in Russia's oil export plans. If anything disrupts this path, Russia could strike back by shutting down the CPC pipeline that runs through Kazakhstan. This pipeline is important because major US oil companies like Chevron and Exxon have big stakes in it. So, Russia also has ways to put pressure on the West. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has warned that if Russia doesn't agree to a peace deal with Ukraine by August 7–9, he will impose up to 100 per cent tariffs on countries that continue buying Russian oil. On top of that, a 25 per cent tariff on all Indian goods entering the US has already come into effect starting this Friday. Rs. 5.9 lakh crore trade at risk According to a Reuters report, after Donald Trump's warning, Indian state-run oil companies have stopped buying Russian oil this week. If India gives in to US pressure and stops buying oil from Russia, the impact will not just be on Russia, it could shake the entire global oil market. Crude oil prices might rise above USD 80 per barrel worldwide. India and Russia have always shared a strong bond. In the financial year 2024–25, the trade between the two countries reached USD 68.7 billion i.e. nearly Rs. 5.9 lakh crore. That's about 5.8 times more than the trade before the COVID-19 pandemic. A big part of this trade is crude oil. Russia now supplies around 40 per cent of all the oil India needs. But the partnership between India and Russia is not just about oil. It also includes defence and nuclear energy. India buys many of its military weapons from Russia, and both countries are working together to build nuclear reactors. Now, Trump's pressure could weaken this strong partnership. If things go wrong, it may harm India's energy security and defence strength. India caught between two powerful partners India is facing a tough situation. On one side, it has deep and long-standing ties with Russia. On the other, it has important trade relations with the United States. Now, all of this has come down to a difficult choice involving USD 68 billion (around Rs. 5.9 lakh crore) in trade. Trump has even warned of tariffs as high as 500 per cent on countries that continue buying oil from Russia. This is like a sword hanging over India's head. Indian High Commissioner Vikram Doraiswami made it clear that the country cannot shut down its economy just to follow Western sanctions. He also pointed out that European countries are still trading with Russia, so it's unfair to expect India to stop completely.

Reddit surges as AI-driven ad strategy wins praise from Wall Street

Reddit's shares surged 15% on Friday after it reported quarterly results that exceeded Street expectations, boosting investor confidence in the platform's AI-based advertising tools and strong user engagement. The company has also posted a rosy forecast that comes on the heels of similarly upbeat results from ad industry leaders such as Meta and Alphabet, underscoring a broader sector shift as advertisers gravitate towards platforms that provide artificial-intelligence tools to create more personalised campaigns. The company expects third-quarter revenue of between $535 million and $545 million, well above analysts' average estimate of $473 million, according to data compiled by LSEG. Reddit's focus on understanding user intent through authentic community conversations positions it to unlock new monetisation opportunities, said Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell. "Being able to home in on exactly the kind of consumer who might be open to splurge on what a seller is offering has made sites like Reddit hugely popular with advertisers," Hewson said. Reddit's results, along with those of Google and Meta, signal the ad industry's resilience in the face of growing economic uncertainty brought on by shifting U.S. trade policy. The company's diverse ad offerings, including ads inserting brands directly within conversations on its subreddit discussions, remain attractive to marketers. Reddit's daily active unique visitors increased 21%, with analysts saying stabilizing daily active user trends are bolstering investor confidence in the platform's "long-term growth narrative". Despite variable Google-driven traffic posing a headwind in the second quarter, Reddit's U.S. daily active users held steady, expressing confidence that the company's unique content was valuable to both Google and searchers, analysts at Piper Sandler said. The company has been investing in new products, search capabilities and international expansion to offset inconsistent user traffic. Reddit is currently valued at a premium compared to its peers, trading at 74.57 times its projected earnings over the next 12 months, well above Pinterest's 19.39 and Snap's 27.54. If gains hold, Reddit is set to add more than $4 billion to its market cap.
