Devices connect people but does it take away anything in return? Jean challenges the families to replace screen time for "me time" and discovers surprising blind spots in their digital habits.
Byte The Habit
About the show:
Byte the Habit is a heartwarming social experiment series that tackles the timely and often unspoken questions of our time: What is technology doing to us and our families—and what can we do about it?
From dinner tables interrupted by notifications to downtime routines governed by algorithms, screens have seeped into every corner of our domestic lifestyle.
Over six episodes, behavioural scientist Dr. Jean Liu, guides three families into a process of tailored experimentation, inviting us to pause, reflect and reimagine the way we live with technology.
These aren't stories about going analog. Each episode combines Jean's insights to uncover blind spots in our digital habits, build deeper connections and show how tech can empower rather than subtract from our lives.

Varda Space raises $187 million to accelerate development of drugs in space

Varda Space Industries said on Thursday it has raised $187 million in a funding round led by venture capital firms Natural Capital and Shrug Capital, to boost the technology for robotic drug manufacturing in space. The latest round, which included participation from Lux Capital, billionaire Peter Thiel, Founders Fund and Vinod Khosla's eponymous investment fund Khosla Ventures, brings the total capital raised by Varda to $329 million. "With this capital, Varda will continue to increase our flight cadence and build out the pharmaceutical lab that will deliver the world's first microgravity-enabled drug formulation," said Varda CEO Will Bruey. Materials such as the active pharmaceutical ingredients in medicines crystallize differently in space due to the lack of gravity, creating drug formulations that would otherwise be impossible, the company said. In 2023, Varda successfully completed its first, 27-hour drug manufacturing experiment in space and brought the drug back to Earth. Since launching its first space capsule, W-1, in 2023, Varda has completed three successful launch and return missions, with a fourth currently in orbit and a fifth expected to launch before the end of the year. During its first W-1 mission, Varda grew crystals of anti-HIV drug ritonavir while flying in Low Earth Orbit, and succesfully recovered the original form of the drug after re-entering Earth, with no signs of conversion. The company said it has also expanded its terrestrial footprint with an office in Huntsville, Alaska and a laboratory in El Segundo, California. It plans to use the lab space to crystallize more biologic drugs, to turn them into structured solids for research and to improve their formulation.

Industry video game actors pass agreement with studios for AI security

LOS ANGELES :Hollywood video game voice and motion capture actors signed a new contract with video game studios on Wednesday with a focus on artificial intelligence protections, the actors' union, SAG-AFTRA, said in a press release, ending a near year-long strike. "AI was the centerpiece of our proposal package," video game voice actor and member of the negotiation committee Sarah Elmaleh told Reuters after the new agreement passed. Elmaleh, a voice actor for popular titles like "Final Fantasy XV" and "Call of Duty: Black Ops III," said she knew it was crucial to ensure there was a baseline for how to ethically use AI in the gaming industry. The new protections include consent and disclosure requirements for AI digital replica use and the ability for performers to suspend consent for the generation of new material during a strike. "This deal achieves important progress around AI protections, and progress is the name of the game," SAG-AFTRA President Fran Drescher said in the guild's statement. The deal applies to video game studios Activision Productions, Blindlight, Disney Character Voices, Electronic Arts Productions, Formosa Interactive, Insomniac Games, Llama Productions, Take 2 Productions and WB Games. The new Interactive Media Agreement, which goes into effect immediately, was approved by SAG-AFTRA members by a vote of 95.04 per cent to 4.96 per cent, ratifying the deal and ending the video game strike, which had been suspended pending ratification. The new contract also offers more performer safety measures, which was a specific concern for motion capture video game performers. "There are folks who not only give their voices to these characters, but their bodies, and they put their bodies on the line for these characters," Elmaleh said. Motion capture actors will have medics available during high-risk jobs. The deal also provides compounded increases in performer pay at a rate of 15.17 per cent upon ratification plus additional 3 per cent increases in November 2025, November 2026 and November 2027. The work stoppage of video game voice actors and motion-capture performers started following failed contract negotiations focused around AI-related protections for workers, bringing about another work stoppage in Hollywood following the dual writers' and actors' strikes in 2023. The strike brought a larger call to action across Hollywood as people in the industry advocate for a law that can protect them from AI risks. The NO FAKES Act, a bipartisan bill in Congress which would make it illegal to make an AI replica of someone's likeness and voice without their permission, has gained support from the SAG-AFTRA performers union, the Motion Picture Association, The Recording Academy and Disney.

Trump names Transportation Secretary Duffy as interim NASA administrator

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday tapped Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy to serve as the interim administrator of NASA, a role that has remained vacant since Trump withdrew his initial nominee. Duffy will temporarily take over the post that has been in the spotlight due to Trump's feud with billionaire Elon Musk, who wanted his close ally Jared Isaacman to lead the space agency. "Sean is doing a TREMENDOUS job in handling our Country's Transportation Affairs ... He will be a fantastic leader of the ever more important Space Agency, even if only for a short period of time," Trump wrote on Truth Social. Trump named Isaacman, a billionaire private astronaut, to be the NASA administrator in December, before abruptly withdrawing his nomination in May, in a decision that angered SpaceX-owner Musk. While at the time the White House did not provide an explanation for pulling Isaacman's nomination, Trump has since said it was "inappropriate" to have named Isaacman as NASA administrator, considering Musk's business with the space agency. After Trump's announcement on Wednesday, Isaacman called it "a great move" and wished Duffy well. "NASA needs political leadership from someone the President trusts and has confidence in," Isaacman said on X. Trump's announcement came as Politico reported that more than 2,100 senior-ranking NASA employees are set to leave their jobs under a push by the administration to shed staff through early retirement, buyouts and deferred resignations. Under Trump's administration, the U.S. space industry and NASA's workforce of 18,000 have been whipsawed by looming layoffs and proposed budget cuts that would cancel dozens of science programs.
