This Giant Bird Went Extinct 600 Years Ago. Scientists Say They Can Resurrect It.

Nicknamed Romulus, Remus, and Khaleesi, these pups were far from the magnificent animals that prowled North America before the early Holocene. Instead, as Colossal's own chief science officer later clarified, they were really just grey wolves with around 20 gene edits—not the millions that'd likely be needed to actually create a dire wolf (if such a thing was even possible).
Now, Colossal is at it again. And this time the company wants to bring back all nine species of the giant moa—a flightless bird native to New Zealand that died out as a result of overhunting some 600 years ago. Of course, this announcement differs from the previous one in a key way: They didn't actually bring the bird back (at least, not yet.)
But a media blitz of news coverage, interviews with legendary New Zealand director Peter Jackson, and a flashy announcement video show that Colossal is serious about bringing the giant moa back to the southwestern Pacific island.
This diverse group of birds sported a variety of different attributes and (most notably) sizes. The smallest of the bunch—the bush moa (Anomalopteryx didiformis)—was about the size of a turkey, while the the South Island giant moa (Dinornis robustus) and North Island giant moa (Dinornis novaezealandiae) both stood roughly 11 feet tall.
Even through they looked like a strange cross between an emu and kiwi, the moa's closest living relative is the tinamou group, which lives in central and South America. With the geographical differences providing a big clue, the word 'closest' is doing a lot of heavy lifting, as the two groups separated roughly 60 million years ago.
The Associated Press reports that Colossal will first identify well-preserved moa bones from which DNA can be extracted. For his part, Jackson himself owns the world's largest collection of moa bones (around 300 to 400 specimens). From there, they'll compare the genetic sequences to tinamou and emu, the latter of which will be required for their impressive stature.
'What emus have is very large embryos, very large eggs,' Andrew Pask, a Colossal scientific advisor from the University of Melbourne Australia, told New Scientist. 'And that's one of the things that you definitely need to de-extinct a moa.'
Pask also clarified that this project will be more expansive than the dire wolf project, and that there will be 'orders of magnitude' more DNA edits. The other (sort of) positive is that the moa hasn't been extinct for thousands of years like the dire wolf, so its natural ecosystem hasn't evolved far beyond its extinction.
Some scientists are critical of the idea. Even with the more DNA edits, the resulting 'Colossal moa' won't be a de-extinct moa, but a genetically modified animal that's a close facsimile to the original. It's also unlikely that these GMO-moas will ever be able to roam their natural habitat. They may look like moas, but they won't be able to fulfill the moa's ecological role, which will relegate them to a life as little more than a living museum piece, like the dire wolves.
Despite Colossal's attempts at 'de-extinction,' genetic modification does play an increasingly important role in conservation. Genetic research brought the critically endangered black-footed ferret back from the brink, and that's just one of many examples.
The world is currently experiencing its sixth mass extinction, with potentially thousands of species lost every year. Bringing back woolly mammoths, dire wolves, and giant moa (or close approximations of those ancient creatures) is undeniably enticing, but it doesn't do much for the animals and ecosystems that need our help today.

WASHINGTON — Filmmaker Peter Jackson owns one of the largest private collections of bones of an extinct New Zealand bird called the moa. His fascination with the flightless ostrich-like bird has led to an unusual partnership with a biotech company known for its grand and controversial plans to bring back lost species. Last week, Colossal Biosciences announced an effort to genetically engineer living birds to resemble the extinct South Island giant moa — which stood 12 feet tall — with $15 million in funding from Jackson and his partner, Fran Walsh. The collaboration also includes the New Zealand-based Ngai Tahu Research Center. 'The movies are my day job, and the moa are my fun thing I do,' Jackson said. 'Every New Zealand schoolchild has a fascination with the moa.' Outside scientists say the idea of bringing back extinct species onto the modern landscape is likely impossible, although it may be feasible to tweak the genes of living animals to have similar physical traits. Scientists have mixed feelings on whether that will be helpful, and some worry that focusing on lost creatures could distract from protecting species that still exist. The moa had roamed New Zealand for 4,000 years until they became extinct around 600 years ago, mainly because of overhunting. A large skeleton brought to England in the 19th century, now on display at the Yorkshire Museum, prompted international interest in the long-necked bird. Unlike Colossal's work with dire wolves, the moa project is in very early stages. It started with a phone call about two years ago after Jackson heard about the company's efforts to 'de-extinct' — or create genetically similar animals to — species such as the woolly mammoth and the dire wolf. Then Jackson put Colossal in touch with experts he'd met through his own moa bone collecting. At that point, he'd amassed 300 to 400 bones, he said. In New Zealand, it's legal to buy and sell moa bones found on private lands, but not on public conservation areas — nor to export them. The first stage of the moa project will be to identify well-preserved bones from which it may be possible to extract DNA, Colossal's chief scientist, Beth Shapiro, said. Those DNA sequences will be compared with genomes of living bird species, including the ground-dwelling tinamou and emu, 'to figure out what it is that made the moa unique compared to other birds,' she said. Colossal used a similar process of comparing ancient DNA of extinct dire wolves to determine the genetic differences with gray wolves. Then scientists took blood cells from a living gray wolf and used the CRISPR gene-editing tool to modify them at 20 sites. Pups with long white hair and muscular jaws were born late last year. Working with birds presents different challenges, Shapiro said. Unlike mammals, bird embryos develop inside eggs, so the process of transferring an embryo to a surrogate will not look like mammalian IVF. 'There's lots of different scientific hurdles that need to be overcome with any species that we pick as a candidate for de-extinction,' Shapiro said. 'We are in the very early stages.' If the Colossal team succeeds in creating a tall bird with huge feet and thick pointed claws resembling the moa, there's also the pressing question of where to put it, said Duke University ecologist Stuart Pimm, who is not involved in the project. 'Can you put a species back into the wild once you've exterminated it there?' he said. 'I think it's exceedingly unlikely that they could do this in any meaningful way.' 'This will be an extremely dangerous animal,' Pimm added. The direction of the project will be shaped by Maori scholars at the University of Canterbury's Ngai Tahu Research Center. Ngai Tahu archaeologist Kyle Davis, an expert in moa bones, said the work has 'really reinvigorated the interest in examining our own traditions and mythology.' At one of the archaeological sites that Jackson and Davis visited to study moa remains, called Pyramid Valley, there are also antique rock art done by Maori people — some depicting moa before their extinction. FEMA's flood maps often miss dangerous flash flood risks, leaving homeowners unprepared

Deadly and destructive flash flooding in Texas and several other states in July 2025 is raising questions about the nation's flood maps and their ability to ensure that communities and homeowners can prepare for rising risks. The same region of Texas Hill Country where a flash flood on July 4 killed more than 130 people was hit again with downpours a week later, forcing searchers to temporarily pause their efforts to find missing victims. Other states including New Mexico, Oklahoma, Vermont and Iowa also saw flash flood damage in July. The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency's flood maps are intended to be the nation's primary tool for identifying flood risks. Originally developed in the 1970s to support the National Flood Insurance Program, these maps, known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps, or FIRMs, are used to determine where flood insurance is required for federally backed mortgages, to inform local building codes and land-use decisions, and to guide flood plain management strategies. In theory, the maps enable homeowners, businesses and local officials to understand their flood risk and take appropriate steps to prepare and mitigate potential losses. But while FEMA has improved the accuracy and accessibility of the maps over time with better data, digital tools and community input, the maps still don't capture everything — including the changing climate. There are areas of the country that flood, some regularly, that don't show up on the maps as at risk. I study flood-risk mapping as a university-based researcher and at First Street, an organization created to quantify and communicate climate risk. In a 2023 assessment using newly modeled flood zones with climate-adjusted precipitation records, we found that more than twice as many properties across the country were at risk of a 100-year flood than the FEMA maps identified. Even in places where the FEMA maps identified a flood risk, we found that the federal mapping process, its overreliance on historical data, and political influence over the updating of maps can lead to maps that don't fully represent an area's risk. What FEMA flood maps miss FEMA's maps are essential tools for identifying flood risks, but they have significant gaps that limit their effectiveness. One major limitation is that they don't consider flooding driven by intense bursts of rain. The maps primarily focus on river channels and coastal flooding, largely excluding the risk of flash flooding, particularly along smaller waterways such as streams, creeks and tributaries. This limitation has become more important in recent years due to climate change. Rising global temperatures can result in more frequent extreme downpours, leaving more areas vulnerable to flooding, yet unmapped by FEMA. For example, when flooding from Hurricane Helene hit unmapped areas around Asheville, North Carolina, in 2024, it caused a huge amount of uninsured damage to properties. Even in areas that are mapped, like the Camp Mystic site in Kerr County, Texas, that was hit by a deadly flash flood on July 4, 2025, the maps may underestimate their risk because of a reliance on historic data and outdated risk assessments. Political influence can fuel long delays Additionally, FEMA's mapping process is often shaped by political pressures. Local governments and developers sometimes fight to avoid high-risk designations to avoid insurance mandates or restrictions on development, leading to maps that may understate actual risks and leave residents unaware of their true exposure. An example is New York City's appeal of a 2015 FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Maps update. The delay in resolving the city's concerns has left it with maps that are roughly 20 years old, and the current mapping project is tied up in legal red tape. On average, it takes five to seven years to develop and implement a new FEMA Flood Insurance Rate Map. As a result, many maps across the U.S. are significantly out of date, often failing to reflect current land use, urban development or evolving flood risks from extreme weather. This delay directly affects building codes and infrastructure planning, as local governments rely on these maps to guide construction standards, development approvals and flood mitigation projects. Ultimately, outdated maps can lead to underestimating flood risks and allowing vulnerable structures to be built in areas that face growing flood threats. How technology advances can help New advances in satellite imaging, rainfall modeling and high-resolution lidar, which is similar to radar but uses light, make it possible to create faster, more accurate flood maps that capture risks from extreme rainfall and flash flooding. However, fully integrating these tools requires significant federal investment. Congress controls FEMA's mapping budget and sets the legal framework for how maps are created. For years, updating the flood maps has been an unpopular topic among many publicly elected officials, because new flood designations can trigger stricter building codes, higher insurance costs and development restrictions. In recent years, the rise of climate risk analytics models and private flood risk data have allowed the real estate, finance and insurance industries to rely less on FEMA's maps. These new models incorporate forward-looking climate data, including projections of extreme rainfall, sea-level rise and changing storm patterns — factors FEMA's maps generally exclude. Real estate portals like Zillow, Redfin, and now provide property-level flood risk scores that consider both historical flooding and future climate projections. The models they use identify risks for many properties that FEMA maps don't, highlighting hidden vulnerabilities in communities across the United States. Research shows that the availability, and accessibility, of climate data on these sites has started driving property-buying decisions that increasingly take climate change into account. Implications for the future As homebuyers understand more about a property's flood risks, that may shift the desirability of some locations over time. Those shifts will have implications for property valuations, community tax-revenue assessments, population migration patterns and a slew of other considerations. However, while these may feel like changes being brought on by new data, the risk was already there. What is changing is people's awareness. The federal government has an important role to play in ensuring that accurate risk assessments are available to communities and Americans everywhere. As better tools and models evolve for assessing risk evolve, FEMA's risk maps need to evolve, too.
