Karnataka Child Rights Activists Urge Govt To Adopt U-Shaped Seating In Schools
Following the implementation of U-shaped seating arrangements in several schools in Kerala to eliminate the concept of backbenchers, child rights activists in Karnataka are urging the state government to adopt the same strategy. This seating model aims to foster equality and ensures that teachers can pay attention to all students in the classroom.
Nagasimha G Rao, a child rights activist, has written to the Minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Madhu Bangarappa, requesting that U-shaped seating arrangements be introduced in government schools, according to a report by Bangalore Mirror. Rao noted that traditional row-based seating allows teachers to focus primarily on front-row students, whereas U-shaped seating enables teachers to engage with all students, promoting equality and eliminating the stigma associated with being a backbencher.
Echoing this sentiment, child rights activist Vasudeva Sharma expressed that U-shaped seating would ensure teachers give equal attention to all students, changing the perception of those seated in the front row.
Dr Thippeswamy KT, a member of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights told the news agency that while the idea is good in principle, it may not be practically feasible. He pointed out that students sitting on the sides may experience neck pain from focusing on the blackboard or teacher for 45 minutes. He stressed that the authorities would need to provide the necessary infrastructure in government schools before implementing U-shaped seating arrangements, the report added.
Eight schools in Kerala have already implemented this seating arrangement, and a school in Punjab has also adopted it. Ramavilasom Vocational Higher Secondary School (RVHSS) in Valakom, a district in South Kerala, introduced this unique classroom setup to ensure every primary student receives equal attention, according to PTI.
Inspired by the Malayalam movie 'Sthanarthi Sreekuttan', the school adopted an innovative seating arrangement where seats are placed along the four walls of the classroom, making every student sit in front benches. Minister K B Ganesh Kumar, whose family runs RMVHSS, played a key role in introducing this new system. After previewing 'Sthanarthi Sreekuttan' a year before its release, he discussed its implementation in RMVHSS primary classes with the teachers, the report added.
Initially, the school introduced this arrangement in class 1, and after receiving positive feedback, extended it to all lower primary classes, stated Sunil P Sekhar, Headmaster of RMVHSS. He mentioned that this system allowed teachers to give equal attention to all students, facilitating better monitoring. It also eliminated the concept of backbenchers, giving every student a prominent position.
Teachers observed that similar systems are already in practice in countries like Finland and Norway, where the student-teacher ratio in schools is better.

Remove Vedan's song: CU panel
Kozhikode: The expert committee appointed by Calicut University vice-chancellor P Raveendran has recommended removing rapper Vedan's (Hirandas Murali) song 'Bhumi Njan Vazhunnidam' from the third semester BA Malayalam syllabus. The panel said comparing the musical aspects of the song with Michael Jackson's 'They Don't Care About Us' would be too demanding for students. The VC had asked the panel to examine the inclusion of the song in the syllabus. The report submitted by former head of Malayalam department MM Basheer to Raveendran said the comparative study of the musical features of Vedan's and Jackson's songs should be removed and replaced with a more suitable topic. The song was part of the Introduction to Comparative Literature course, under the module Puthu Pravanathakal (new trends). BJP-affiliated member AK Anuraj had objected to including Vedan's song in the syllabus and filed a complaint with governor Rajendra Arlekar. The governor sought a report from the VC, who then instructed Basheer to examine the issue. Basheer was also asked to review the inclusion of Kathakali song Ajita Hare... Madhava by Muringur Shankaran Potti and its modern version Ajita Hare by Gouri Lakshmi. The report said that Bhoomi Njan Vazhunnidam is Vedan's lyrical declaration. As the title suggests, the song has a strong rhythmic beat. It refers to political events from different periods in world history, aiming to remind listeners of these moments, even briefly. Some parts contain factual errors and ideological contradictions. Basheer also recommended removing the comparative study of Gouri Lakshmi's song, saying it would be hard for BA Malayalam students without musical training to compare Kathakali and classical music. According to university officials, the report will go to the board of studies, which will decide the future course of action.

Expert suggests removal of Vedan's song from Calicut varsity syllabus
M.M. Basheer, former head of the Department of Malayalam, University of Calicut, who was recently asked by Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran to look into the complaints around the inclusion of a song by rapper Hirandas Murali (Vedan) in the syllabus of the third semester BA (Malayalam) course, has suggested that the song be removed. A.K. Anuraj, a Syndicate member affiliated to the BJP, had earlier complained to the V-C and Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, also the Chancellor of the university, saying that the inclusion of the song in the syllabus was inappropriate. Mr. Basheer pointed out in his report to the V-C that the syllabus did not warrant a comparison of Mr. Murali's song Bhumi Njan Vazhunna Idam and Michael Jackson's song They don't care about us. So, an analysis and evaluation of the literary peculiarities of these songs were irrelevant. He also suggested that a comparative study of Kathakali music and Carnatic music citing singer Gowri Lakshmi's rendition of Ajitha Hare also be removed from the syllabus as it would be tough to ask BA (Malayalam) students not trained in these musical streams to compare them.

No more backbenchers: Tamil Nadu schools to adopt U-shaped seating
The Tamil Nadu government has announced that traditional classroom seating will be replaced with a U-shaped arrangement. This initiative is being introduced on a pilot basis to help teachers maintain better eye contact, monitor students effectively, and encourage greater interaction by reducing hierarchical barriers. The government stated, "every student's voice should be heard and seen and that learning should be more of a conversation than a lecture." The idea was inspired by a Malayalam children's film and has already been implemented in approximately seven schools in Kerala and one in Punjab, though it has faced some opposition in Kerala. A report from Presidency Girls' School in Chennai's Egmore shows the 'Pa-shaped' layout, which will be adapted based on classroom size and student numbers across the state.
