US women's rugby star sent off for 'deliberate and dangerous' head stamp of Australian opponent

American Olympic rugby star Alev Kelter will face a judicial hearing and potentially lengthy suspension after being sent off in a women's rugby test on Saturday for stamping on the head of an opponent.
Team USA was playing against Australia, who went on to celebrate a 27-19 victory in Saturday's contest.
Upon a video review, referees issued a red card around the 79th minute of action in the Pacific Four Series test. Officials determined Kelter forcefully stamped on the head of Australian center Georgie Friedrichs.

Microphones picked up a referee saying, "Twelve, blue (Kelter), is going to receive a permanent red card because this is thuggery, it is deliberate and it is very dangerous foul play.
"She's clearly stamped on the head of the Australian player. That's reckless, that's dangerous and she's going off."

Friedrichs appeared to avoid any major injuries in the incident. Team USA coach Sione Fukofuka later apologized to the Australian players.
Foul play in rugby that involves contact with the head is treated with extreme seriousness. Rugby, like many contact sports, has changed its rules in an effort to limit the danger of concussion and other head injuries.
Kelter is a three-time US Olympic representative in rugby sevens and won a bronze medal in Paris last year. She previously played ice hockey and soccer for the University of Wisconsin.

SUVA, Fiji (AP) — Fiji conceded a try after two minutes but rallied to score four tries and beat 14-man Scotland 29-14 in a one-off test match on Saturday. Winger Kyle Rowe scored the first try of the match only two minutes after the kickoff and New Zealand-born flyhalf Fergus Burke converted for a 7-0 lead. Fiji, which lost 21-18 to Australia last weekend, narrowed the lead with a penalty to flyhalf Caleb Muntz in the 20th minute, then took its first lead at 8-7 with Ikanivere's try. Kalaveti Ravouvou sawed through the Scotland defense to score in the 39th minute and Fiji took a 15-7 lead to halftime. Scotland opened the second half with a slick try to center Tom Jordan, converted by Burke, which cut the lead to a point at 15-14. Fiji replied with a superb try to the Toulon winger and Olympic sevens gold medalist Jiuta Wainiqolo to increase its lead to 22-14 before the penalty try sealed its win. The win was Fiji's second over Scotland in five official tests and adds evidence that Fiji deserves to be included among the top 12 nations in world rugby in next year's inaugural Nations Cup. Warriors considered trading for LeBron James recently
When LeBron James decided to exercise his player option for the 2025-26 season on June 29, his agent, Rich Paul, issued a cryptic statement that acknowledged the Los Angeles Lakers are building for the future and that James wants to be in a situation where he can contend for the NBA championship. The Warriors had previously contacted the Lakers about trading for James — once this past season just after the Lakers acquired Luka Doncic, and once previously just before the 2023-24 trade deadline. James is good friends with Warriors mainstays Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, and he has hinted in the past that he would love to play on the same team as Curry. The two superstars did play together last summer as members of Team USA men's basketball and helped lead the squad to an Olympic gold medal. The NBA's all-time leading scorer has been quiet lately, which has lent a bit of mystery to the whole situation between his camp and the Lakers. Meanwhile, the team has gotten a bit closer to championship contention by signing center Deandre Ayton and forward Jake LaRavia as free agents.
