5 reasons why you should replace your everyday coffee with Matcha; health expert shares unbelievable benefits

Matcha is an increasingly popular coffee alternative, especially among Gen Z. It is a concentrated form of green tea that involves grinding the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant into a fine powder. Since the entire tea leaf is consumed rather than steeped, the drink has a higher concentration of caffeine and antioxidants as compared to a typical green tea. But have you ever imagined what happens if you replace your everyday coffee with matcha? Let's find out.
According to a study published in PubMed, the plants used for matcha are grown in the shade, which boosts their amino acid content. Hence, due to its purported benefits, many members of Gen Z are swapping out their morning coffee for matcha.
In research conducted by the Department of Environmental Medicine and Population Sciences, Graduate School of Medicine, Osaka University, there is a link between drinking more than 120 millilitres of green tea and a decreased risk of gallbladder and bile duct cancer. Apart from this, it helps in:
Supporting cognitive function
Preventing certain diseases, such as cancer
Supporting weight loss
Why should you replace your everyday coffee with matcha?
Many of us use coffee to jump-start our day in today's fast-paced day and age. But replacing your usual coffee habit with matcha might give you a milder, protracted boost, minus the jittery comedown. Health experts claim that the ultra-fine ground powder of specially grown green tea leaves known as matcha is a nutritional powerhouse.
Matchas can be a delicious switch from plain coffee, but it's important to be mindful of how they're made. "Café-style mochas are often high in sugar, cream, and syrups, so I recommend enjoying them occasionally. For a healthier option, ask for low-fat or plant-based milk, skip the whipped cream, and reduce added syrups. Better still, a homemade mocha using unsweetened cocoa and minimal sweetener offers antioxidants from cocoa and a steady caffeine boost, without unnecessary calories. It's a smarter, more balanced way to indulge daily," says Dr. Swati Sharma, dietitian and nutritionist, PRB Healthcare.
5 reasons why you should replace your everyday coffee with matcha
Unlike coffee, which releases caffeine all at once and can lead to energy highs and lows, matcha offers a calm, focused energy.
Cognitive health: 'Matcha has a very special amino acid called L-theanine that awakens you for learning but provides a state of relaxation without causing you to feel tired. When combined with caffeine, it increases alertness and mental clarity without the usual coffee crash,' says Jeevan Kasara, Director and CEO, Steris Healthcare Pvt. Ltd.
Metabolism: "Matcha is high in antioxidants, especially catechins such as EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which I hear are good for increasing the efficiency of metabolism, promoting heart health, and decreasing inflammation. Its detoxifiers also help keep the body clean naturally."
Cooling effect: The vibrant green colour and subtly sweet, earthy flavour taste good hot or cold and make for a healthful, "cooler" alternative.
Alleviates acidity problems: Being that matcha is a more alkaline substance, it's much gentler and may alleviate some problems such as acidity or bloating,' the expert adds.
Mental health: Match offers a calming effect to the brain and helps to reduce stress and anxiety.
Changes in the body when you shift from coffee to matcha
The transition to matcha might be gentler on the stomach. 'Coffee is acidic and can irritate the digestive system, especially in some people who already have sensitive GI tracts.'
'If you're after a stable source of energy, mental clarity, and good health, matcha is a cool and healthy alternative to your daily coffee. It's more than a trend; it's a science-supported lifestyle upgrade.

Matcha Vs Green Tea: What's The Difference And Which Is Better

When it comes to sipping your way to better health, both matcha and green tea are solid contenders. They come from the same plant, Camellia sinensis, but how they are grown, processed and enjoyed makes a world of difference. So, if you have ever stood in front of the tea aisle wondering what to choose, here is a lowdown to help you decide. A Tale Of Two Teas Let us start with the basics. Green tea is typically made by steeping whole leaves in hot water, while matcha is a fine powder made from green tea leaves that you whisk into hot water. With matcha, you are actually drinking the entire leaf. This distinction is more than just prep – it changes the game nutritionally. As explained by green tea leaves are either steamed (as in Japan) or pan-fired (as in China), then dried and packaged. Matcha, on the other hand, comes from shade-grown tea plants – a process that boosts the chlorophyll and caffeine levels – and is stone-ground into a vibrant green powder. Flavour And Feels Green tea is known for its mellow, sometimes grassy taste. Steep it too long, though, and you might get a bitter brew (you are not alone if that has happened – it is a common complaint). Matcha, on the other hand, brings a stronger, creamier, umami-rich flavour – some say oceanic with a sweet and slightly bitter edge. You can also think of matcha as green tea's bold cousin. The Buzz: Caffeine And Calm Caffeine-wise, green tea is lighter. You will find roughly 28 mg per 8 oz cup, while matcha can pack up to 70 mg. But matcha also contains L-theanine, an amino acid that promotes calm without drowsiness. That is why many people describe matcha as giving a more focused energy compared to the jittery buzz of coffee. Nutrients And Antioxidants Both drinks offer antioxidants, but matcha is more concentrated. Because you are consuming the whole leaf, matcha contains higher levels of EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) – the antioxidant superstar linked to anti-inflammatory, heart-health and even anti-cancer properties, according to health experts. In fact, matcha contains up to 137 times more EGCG than certain green tea brands, according to research. That makes it a favourite for those looking to boost their antioxidant intake. Weight Loss And Metabolism Green tea and matcha have both been studied for their role in supporting metabolism. Green tea may lead to mild weight loss with a healthy lifestyle, though results are generally modest. Matcha, thanks to its higher EGCG content, has shown promise in small studies when consumed before exercise for improved fat burning. Still, as experts caution, more research is needed before calling either a miracle fat burner. Cost And Convenience Matcha typically costs more than green tea due to its labour-intensive production process. A box of green tea bags might cost you a few bucks, but a small tin of good-quality matcha could be significantly more – something to keep in mind if you are sipping daily. Prep-wise, green tea is as easy as dropping a tea bag into hot water. Matcha takes a bit more effort. Ideally, you'll need a whisk, a bowl and some patience. But if you are into rituals (or frothy green drinks), it can be a calming little ceremony. Final Sip: What To Pick? So, which one should you pick? If you are looking for a light, refreshing tea with lower caffeine, green tea is your go-to. If you are after a more concentrated, antioxidant-packed energy boost, matcha might be your jam. Either way, you are doing something great for your body – just do not overdo it on the caffeine, and watch the added sugar in those fancy matcha lattes. At the end of the day, it is not about which tea is better, it is about what works best for your taste, routine and lifestyle.

Ceiling slab collapses in MKCG block

BERHAMPUR: A ceiling slab on the fourth floor of the super speciality block at MKCG Medical College and Hospital collapsed, triggering panic among patients, doctors and staff on duty on Friday. However, no injury was reported as the incident occurred in the corridor when it was empty. The five-storey block constructed by L&T at a cost of Rs 150 crore under Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana has been facing repeated ceiling collapses. This was the ninth such incident since the building became operational in 2021. In 2023, the government sanctioned Rs 3.6 crore for ceiling renovation with a target to complete the work by February 2024. However, only 70 per cent of the work has been done so far. The ceiling on the fifth floor remains in a dilapidated state. Rainwater seepage in the nursing officers' room on the same floor has forced health staff to work under risky conditions. MCH superintendent Prof Durga Madhab Satpathy said, 'We have apprised our concern to the authorities concerned and urged them to complete the task on war footing.' Meanwhile, panic broke out near the Obstetrics and Gynaecology department after gas leaked from a fire extinguisher installed at the OPD.
