Winners of the Sixth TRT World Citizen Awards announced
Since its inception, the TRT World Citizen Awards have recognised 25 extraordinary individuals from 15 countries, highlighting their selfless efforts and impactful initiatives. This year's ceremony, hosted by TRT Director General Mehmet Zahid Sobacı, was graced by Fahrettin Altun, Turkey's Presidency's head of communications, along with TRT executives, politicians, NGO leaders, and distinguished guests from culture, arts, media, and academia. Adding a musical touch to the evening, Palestinian singer Ilnur performed his moving compositions, 'Wake Up' and 'Keep Your Key,' dedicated to Palestine.
Delivering an impassioned speech, Altun emphasised the core mission of the TRT World Citizen initiative: to institutionalise goodness in an era where negativity often dominates. This programme is a testament to how one human's inspiration and courage can spark change in another," Altun remarked. "By sharing the stories of real-life heroes, we provide a platform for their invaluable contributions to society. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who have made this initiative a reality. It is essential that we sustain this mission, passing on the ideal of goodness to future generations. This program stands as a beacon of hope in addressing humanity's challenges."
In his keynote address, Sobacı highlighted TRT's unwavering commitment to amplifying the voices of those championing justice and truth. "The TRT World Citizen Awards shine a spotlight on the unsung heroes whose sacrifices often go unnoticed. Their stories of resilience and compassion inspire hope and pave the way for a brighter future,' Sobacı stated. "As Türkiye's public broadcaster, TRT leverages its extensive global network to bring these impactful narratives to the forefront, championing goodness and justice worldwide."
Sobacı added, "Through 17 television channels, 17 radio channels, digital platforms, and international events, TRT serves as a voice for the marginalized, ensuring their stories reach audiences around the globe. We are proud to represent humanity's collective pursuit of goodness in all that we do."
The ceremony celebrated remarkable individuals across various categories. In the "Communicator" category, Azima Dhanjee and Arhum Ishtiaq were recognised for their exceptional contributions. Rana Dajani received the award in the "Educator" category, while Hélène Ba was celebrated in the "Youth" category.
The coveted Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Steve Sosebee, founder of the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF). His unparalleled efforts have saved the lives of thousands of children in war and conflict zones.
The prestigious World Citizen of the Year Award was posthumously awarded to Ayşenur Ezgi Eygi, who tragically lost her life during a protest in Nablus on September 6, 2024. The award was accepted by her father, Mehmet Suat Eygi, on her behalf.
Additionally, a special honor—the TRT Special Award—was presented to Dr. Amani Ballour for her extraordinary leadership in managing a hospital during the Syrian war, embodying courage and resilience in the face of adversity.

Tunisian director Kaouther Ben Hania's latest feature, The Voice of Hind Rajab, will premiere in the main Competition at the 2025 Venice Film Festival, which runs from August 27 to September 9. The announcement was made by festival director Alberto Barbera, who described the film as a profoundly moving work likely to leave a lasting impression on both audiences and critics. The Voice of Hind Rajab has been nominated for the Golden Lion, the festival's top prize. The film centres on the harrowing true story of six-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab, who was killed along with six members of her family during an Israeli attack in Gaza in 2024. While fleeing Gaza City, their car was shelled, killing Hind's uncle, aunt and three cousins. Hind and another cousin initially survived and contacted the Palestine Red Crescent Society for help. Days later, their bodies were discovered along with the paramedics who had attempted a rescue. The tragedy drew global attention, with protests erupting around the world. At Columbia University, students renamed Hamilton Hall to 'Hind's Hall,' and American rapper Macklemore released a protest anthem bearing the same name. According to the official synopsis, the film begins on January 29, 2024, when Red Crescent volunteers receive a desperate emergency call. On the other end is a six-year-old girl trapped in a car, pleading for rescue as gunfire rages outside. The Red Crescent team does everything in their power to reach her in time. Her name is Hind Rajab. Ben Hania, best known for her acclaimed documentary Four Daughters, which premiered at Cannes in 2023 and earned an Oscar nomination, revealed that the decision to make The Voice of Hind Rajab was deeply personal and immediate. While traveling for Four Daughters' awards campaign, she came across an audio clip of Hind's final call for help. The impact, she said, was instant and transformative. 'I heard the sound of her voice, and I felt the ground shift beneath me,' Ben Hania recalled. 'In that moment, I knew I couldn't carry on with my original plans. I had to make this film.' She added: 'I contacted the Red Crescent and asked them to let me hear the full audio. It was about 70 minutes long, and harrowing. 'After listening to it, I knew, without a doubt, that I had to drop everything else. I had to make this film. I spoke at length with Hind's mother, with the real people who were on the other end of that call, those who tried to help her. I listened, I cried, I wrote. 'Then I wove a story around their testimonies, using the real audio recording of Hind's voice, and building a single-location film where the violence remains off-screen. That was a deliberate choice. Because violent images are everywhere on our screens, our timelines, our phones.' She concluded: 'What I wanted was to focus on the invisible: the waiting, the fear, the unbearable sound of silence when help doesn't come. Sometimes, what you don't see is more devastating than what you do. 'At the heart of this film is something very simple, and very hard to live with. I cannot accept a world where a child calls for help and no one comes. That pain, that failure, belongs to all of us. This story is not just about Gaza. It speaks to a universal grief. And I believe that fiction (especially when it draws from verified, painful, real events) is cinema's most powerful tool. More powerful than the noise of breaking news or the forgetfulness of scrolling. Cinema can preserve a memory. Cinema can resist amnesia. May Hind Rajab's voice be heard.'

Palestinian film ‘Alam' to screen at AFLAMUNA in Beirut
Written and directed by Firas Khoury, 'Alam' follows the story of a Palestinian teenager named Tamer. Palestinian filmmaker Firas Khoury's feature film Alam will be screening at the AFLAMUNA, a cultural nonprofit based in Beirut working to harness the power of independent Arab cinema to elevate the most pressing social, political and cultural movements of our time, on July 18 at 8:30 PM. The film follows the story of a Palestinian teenager named Tamer, who leads a typical teenage life until the arrival of the beautiful Maysaa changes everything. As he grows closer to her, Tamer agrees to participate in a mysterious and life-changing operation called 'Alam.' Written and directed by Firas Khoury, Alam stars Mahmood Bakri, Sereen Khass, Saleh Bakri, Mohammad Karaki, Ahmad Zaghmouri and Muhammad Abed Elrahman. The film is produced by Marie Pierre Macia, Claire Gadéa, Naomie Lagadec, Melik Kochbati and Ossama Bawardi, with cinematography by Frida Marzouk, editing by Nadia Ben Rachid and music by Faraj Suleiman. In terms of bigger companies at play, Alam was produced by MPM Film, Paprika Films, and Philistine Films, and co-produced by Lacydon Bay Productions, Metafora Production, and the Red Sea Film Festival Foundation, with Arab world distribution by MAD Solutions and Lagoonie Film Production. The feature film received a grant from the Doha Film Institute and a $20,000 script development grant from the Abu Dhabi Film Festival's Sanad Fund. It was also chosen to participate in the Cinéfondation Workshop at the 2017 edition of the Cannes Film Festival and the 2019 Venice GAP-Financing Market; received a $10,000 grant from Cairo Film Connection, the CIFF's Co-Production Market, and was featured at the Atlas Workshops of the Marrakech International Film Festival.
