Asia's tallest Murugan statue to be set up at Thindal temple

Time of India4 days ago
Erode: Ministers Sekar Babu and S Muthusamy on Sunday said Asia's tallest Murugan statue would be set up at the Murugan Temple at Thindal. "Benefactors are coming forward to finance the construction of the 186ft tall Murugan statue at Thindal.
"
Muthusamy said the statue would be made of cement. "The plinth will be 3.5ft tall and it will be made of black granite. The hill, where the statue will come up, is 50ft tall. Hence, the statue will look taller than its actual height. The infrastructure will be planned to accommodate five times the current number of devotees visiting the temple."
Sekar Babu said the Dravidian model govt under the leadership of chief minister M K Stalin was committed to renovating temples.
"During our governance so far, 3,325 temples, 125 of them Murugan temples, have been consecrated. By the end of this year, the number of temples consecrated is expected to reach 3,500."
The HR&CE minister said 46 temples, including Thiruparankundram Arulmigu Subramania Swamy Temple, first in the line of six abodes of Murugan, would be consecrated on Monday.
He said the govt had allocated a record subsidy of Rs1,120 crore to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) department since it assumed office. He said the Palani temple would get a facelift at a cost of Rs416 crore, while Tiruchendur temple would be renovated at a cost of Rs98 crore. Work on installing lifts at Marudhamalai and Swamimalai temples is currently in progress.
He said the work on renovating Tiruchendur temple was likely to be completed by October. "Road work for Tiruttani temple and Siruvapuri temple is also underway at a cost of Rs67 crore and Rs57 crore, respectively."

'How Were You CM…': Stalin Takes On EPS Over Temple Funds Allegations, Says MGR Did It Too

Last Updated: Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin defended the practice and said he is simply following in the footsteps of AIADMK founder MG Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR A political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami alleged that the MK Stalin-led DMK is misusing temple funds by diverting them towards educational institutions. Launching a sharp attack in response Chief Minister MK Stalin on Thursday defended the practice and said he is simply following in the footsteps of AIADMK founder and former CM MG Ramachandran, popularly known as MGR. Stalin took a swipe at Palaniswami by saying he had once acted as a 'dubbing voice" for the BJP, but had now become its 'original voice". 'Until now, he was giving a dubbing voice to the BJP, but now he has turned into the original voice. The HR&CE (Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments) law permits construction of colleges. How were you a chief minister without knowing this, I do not understand," said Stalin at an event in Thiruvar, as quoted in a report published by India Today. He countered Palaniswami's remarks that colleges should not be built using HR&CE funds, and said this is permissible under the law. He reminded him of the precedent set by MGR. 'When MGR was Chief Minister, he inaugurated the Palani Aandavar College. And even you, in your last term, inaugurated the expansion of that college. Were you in a different state during the inauguration?" he was quoted. WHAT ARE THE ALLEGATIONS BY EPS? A report by Deccan Herald said Palaniswami, in one of his campaign speeches, questioned the fairness of diverting temple funds to build colleges. 'Can't the government build colleges using its own funds? When we governed the state, we established so many colleges using funds generated by the government. You are deliberately using temple funds through the HR&CE department. How is it justified to spend funds in this manner that are donated by people to the temple?" he was quoted in the report. 'People view this as a conspiracy. Many people have asked me why the government is spending temple funds. It is as important to the nation as eyes are to a human. But education must be funded by the government. Don't you have funds with the government?" he added. WHAT HAS THE DMK SAID? Besides Stalin's MGR defence, the DMK said it has been a long-standing practice of using temple funds for educational and other humanitarian purposes. HR&CE Minister PK Sekarbabu countered Palaniswami's claims and asked him to 'read history and learn how successive chief ministers since the 1950s have used temple funds to establish colleges for the benefit of the downtrodden". 'He is unaware of history. He should know the evolution of the HR&CE department," Sekarbabu was quoted by Deccan Herald. view comments First Published: July 10, 2025, 16:36 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'Alliances Will Be Formed Close To Polls': EPS Aims For Oppn Unity To Outdo DMK

Last Updated: As the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections approach, the decisions made by Vijay and other non-Dravidian contestants will play a significant role With over eight months to go for the Tamil Nadu assembly polls, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has launched its campaign titled 'Makkalai Kappom, Thamizhagathai Meetpom" (we will protect the people and retrieve Tamil Nadu). In an exclusive conversation with CNN-News 18, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami hinted that doors are open to all parties aiming to defeat the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). 'We have eight months to go. Alliances will be formed closer to elections. A few more parties will join the AIADMK-BJP alliance. How can we say whether TVK will join us for sure? Those who want to defeat the DMK should come together and win. If such parties unite, votes won't split, and the possibility of winning is higher," Palaniswami told CNN-News 18. Actor-turned-politician Vijay had earlier ended speculation that his party (Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam) would not join the BJP or the DMK directly or indirectly. However, AIADMK believes that electoral alliances will only be clear closer to the election. In response to his opinion on Vijay's political debut, Palaniswami said, 'India is a democratic country. Anybody can start a party. Anybody who wants to serve the people can start a party." Ever since the AIADMK joined the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA, the DMK has accused Palaniswami of putting his party in a subservient position to the BJP. Palaniswami hit back at chief minister and DMK president MK Stalin, maintaining that both the AIADMK and the BJP aim to defeat the 'anti-people government" and hence decided to form the alliance. Throughout his campaigns, Palaniswami projects himself as a farmer, identifying with the large agrarian vote banks across the non-metro areas in the state. 'The DMK chief accuses us of forming an alliance for 'personal gains'. What gains is he referring to? I'm a farmer. What will be my gains? DMK may have a lot of assets, and to protect their assets, they may do so…we are not like that. If that were the case, we would have joined hands with them for 2024," he has said. While canvassing, Palaniswami is raising issues from deteriorating law and order to concerns over women's safety. The ruling alliance remains intact. The Congress and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) continue with the DMK, bonded by their anti-BJP stance cemented over the years. The surprise, it turns out, may come from the opposition camp. Among the possibilities is actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) entering into some kind of support for Palaniswami's alliance. This would prevent a split-vote scenario massively beneficial to the DMK. As a debutante, Vijay may want to test the waters by contesting alone, but there are enough examples of those who have stumbled after the initial enthusiasm in this direction. As the election approaches, the decisions made by Vijay and other non-Dravidian contestants will play a significant role in determining who will win in 2026. view comments First Published: July 17, 2025, 07:00 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. VCK Chief Thol Thirumavalan Apologises For Controversial Same-Sex Love Remark After Backlash

The controversy erupted after Thirumavalan described same-sex love as 'perversion', garnering strong condemnation from queer activists Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalan has issued a public apology following backlash from the LGBTQ+ community and activists over his comments on same-sex relationships. The controversy erupted after Thirumavalan described same-sex love as 'perversion", a remark that has since drawn widespread criticism, even from within his own political circle. Thirumavalan made the controversial statement during an interaction with media on July 3, where he suggested that same-sex love is unnatural and goes against societal norms. His comments quickly garnered strong condemnation from queer activists, who termed his words regressive and harmful. In response to the public outcry, Thirumavalan took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express his regret, clarifying that his words were misconstrued and apologising for any offense caused. The initial remarks were condemned by several LGBTQ+ activists who questioned Thirumavalan's understanding of same-sex love and its significance for individuals in the community. Prominent activists across Tamil Nadu argued that his language perpetuated stigma against queer individuals and set back the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. In a joint statement, the Tamil Nadu Queer Collective (TNQC) demanded that Thirumavalan be held accountable for his words. 'This is not just an insensitive remark. It's a reflection of the deep-rooted homophobia still prevalent in mainstream political discourse. We demand a clear stand from Thirumavalan on his support for LGBTQ+ rights," the group said. The sentiment was echoed by several political commentators who criticised Thirumavalan, a leader from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-aligned alliance, for making regressive statements that ran counter to the progressive ideals that his party and the broader Dravidian movement are known for. The Apology In his apology, Thirumavalan expressed that his remarks were intended to reflect personal views, but he also acknowledged the importance of respecting individual freedoms. His decision to apologise came after discussions with party leaders and allies, who advised him to take a more inclusive stance on such sensitive issues. While some activists and party members welcomed the apology, others remain skeptical, questioning whether Thirumavalan's words were a result of political pressure or a genuine change in perspective. 'An apology is one thing, but we need sustained actions in support of the rights of marginalized communities. One apology doesn't change centuries of societal discrimination," said an LGBTQ+ advocate who preferred to remain anonymous. The comment and subsequent apology have sparked a debate within the Tamil Nadu political scene, particularly within the DMK-led alliance. While some have voiced support for Thirumavalan's apology, others see it as a reflection of the broader struggle within political parties to reconcile traditional values with the growing demands for LGBTQ+ rights. Political analyst K Rajendran noted that leaders in Tamil Nadu, including those in the DMK coalition, have been increasingly caught between promoting progressive social policies and holding onto regional cultural values that may not always align with inclusivity. 'Thirumavalan's apology may have been an attempt to assuage anger, but it raises deeper questions about how politicians truly view marginalised communities," he remarked. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
