Hongkongers are warned to brace for heavy showers on Saturday, with the city's observatory forecasting thunderstorms in the next few days due to an active monsoon.
An amber rainstorm warning was issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 6.50am. It means that heavy rain has fallen or is expected to fall generally over Hong Kong, exceeding 30 millimetres in an hour, and is likely to continue.
'Rain is particularly heavy in Eastern District of Hong Kong Island, with heavy rain of more than 70 millimetres of hourly rainfall fallen and may cause serious flooding,' the forecaster said on Saturday morning.
It explained that an active southwesterly monsoon is bringing thundery showers to the coast of southern China and the northern part of the South China Sea.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department said that red flags had been hoisted at several beaches in Hong Kong, including Deep Water Bay Beach on Hong Kong Island and Hap Mun Bay Beach in Sai Kung district.

The amber rainstorm warning was issued at 12.30am on Saturday, just 45 minutes after the local forecaster sent out a red signal. Saturday morning saw the city issue its second black rainstorm signal of the year, with the first such warning going out on Tuesday. 'Please continue to exercise due care. People who have to travel should carefully consider weather and road conditions and take necessary precautions,' the Observatory said as it issued the amber warning. It said whether the black rainstorm warning signal needs to be issued depends on the development of the band of thundery showers. Rain is particularly heavy in the Eastern district of Hong Kong Island and Sai Kung with more then 70 millimetres of hourly rainfall. The government asked members of the public to report any street flooding to the Drainage Services Department and schools that are in session will continue until the end of school hours. Police have so far received one report of flooding on Tseung Kwan O Tunnel Road. The Observatory had earlier issued the amber rainstorm warning at 6.50 am. The latest warnings come five days after Hong Kong saw its first black rainstorm warning of the year.
