Six-month-old baby critically injured at Foxton Beach house
A six-month-old baby was found with critical injuries at a Foxton Beach house, prompting a police investigation. Police were called to the Seabury Ave address, northwest of Levin, at around 5.30am on Sunday. Hato Hone St John said it was first notified of an incident on Seabury Ave in Foxton Beach at 4.41am. "We responded with one ambulance, two rapid response vehicles and one operations manager. We transported one patient, in a critical condition, to Palmerston North Hospital." The baby was then airlifted to Starship Hospital, where he remained in a critical condition. Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Deegan said police were now working to establish how the baby was injured. ADVERTISEMENT "This includes a scene examination at the Foxton Beach house, where a scene guard is currently in place. "Seabury Avenue residents can expect to see a continued police presence in the coming days, as we conduct the scene examination and speak to neighbours as part of our enquiries."

Government introducing instant fines for shoplifters
The government is introducing instant fines for shoplifters, with penalities up to $1000. It said low level theft is a real scourge on the community and public confidence in the justice system is undermined if people can steal with apparently impunity. Retail New Zealand says just over $1.3 billion of goods were stolen in 2023. Under the new regime anyone caught stealing up to $500 worth of retail can be fined up to $500. For goods valued at more than $500 the fine will be up to $1000. Justice Minister, Paul Goldsmith spoke to Lisa Owen.
