Man electrocuted while plucking mangoes with metal rod
KOTA KINABALU : A 42-year-old man died when he was electrocuted while trying to pluck mangoes in Kampung Bambangan, Papar, today.
Papar fire and rescue station chief Rozlan Osman said the victim is believed to have climbed the tree and used an iron rod to poke at the mangoes.
The rod then came into contact with a nearby electric cable, causing the man to be electrocuted and leaving him unconscious on the tree.
'Firemen proceeded to lower the victim using a ladder and rescue rope after the electricity supply was cut off,' he said when contacted today.

Chinese national pleads not guilty after charged with stabbing ex-girlfriend at PJ university
SHAH ALAM, July 21 — A Chinese national student has reportedly pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to stabbing his former girlfriend last week. Free Malaysia Today reported that You Wei, 22, was charged with voluntarily causing grievous hurt by stabbing the woman on the left side of her neck with a knife at a private university in Sunway here on July 14. When he was charged under Section 326 of the Penal Code, You reportedly replied that he understood but 'disagreed'. If convicted, the offence carries a penalty of up to 10 years in jail, or a fine, or whipping, or any combination of the three. Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Sofea Jaysal initially urged the court to deny bail, citing You as a flight risk. However, lawyer Revin Kumar argued that his client You was undergoing treatment for bipolar disorder and will not flee since he is completing his studies. Judge Norazlin Othman granted bail of RM20,000 with two sureties. She also instructed You to refrain from contacting the victim and witnesses, surrender his passport, and report to the nearest police station every month. The case has been fixed for mention on September 17. Last week, the police said they arrested a 21-year-old foreign man for allegedly attacking his 20-year-old ex-girlfriend with a knife at a private university in Subang Jaya, Selangor. Investigations revealed that the victim, who is also a foreign national, suffered slash wounds to the left side of her neck. She was taken to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre emergency department and placed in the red zone for treatment.

Court acquits father, but tells mother to answer for Zayn Rayyan's death
PETALING JAYA, July 21 — The Sessions Court here has reportedly ordered the mother of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matin, a six-year-old autistic boy who died in 2023, to enter her defence on charges of child neglect. New Straits Times reported that Judge Syahliza Warnoh ruled that a prima facie case had been established by the prosecution against Ismanira Abdul Manaf, 30. Her husband and Zayn Rayyan's father, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, also 30, was however acquitted of the joint amended charge brought against the couple in February. On April 24, the prosecution closed the case after calling 28 prosecution witnesses throughout the 20-day trial, which began on February 4. Zaim Ikhwan and Ismanira were charged with neglecting Zayn Rayyan in a manner likely to cause physical harm to the victim in the vicinity of Block R, Idaman Apartment, Damansara Damai up to the nearby river area between 12 noon on Dec 5 and 9.55 pm on Dec 6, 2023. They were charged under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001 read with Section 34 of the Penal Code which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment or a fine of RM50,000 or both, if convicted.
