Bontemps: Lakers may be 'a little worse' after adding Deandre Ayton
But he hasn't lived up to his potential, especially on the defensive end. In general, defense seems to be the big question mark for the Lakers, especially after they lost 3-and-D forward Dorian Finney-Smith to the Houston Rockets just days ago.
Tim Bontemps said on ESPN's "First Take" that the loss of Finney-Smith will be significant, especially since he is close with Luka Doncic.
'If the Lakers are gonna be a team that makes a run in the Western Conference playoffs, they have a lot of work left to do,' Bontemps said. 'One of Luka's best friends in the league is Dorian Finney-Smith. He just left to go to the Houston Rockets, a rival in the Western Conference. That to me is not a great sign for the Lakers doing what they need to, to show Luka Doncic, he should be there long term.'
While he admitted Ayton will help L.A., he feels the team will not improve this coming season — in fact, he said it may even regress.
'I do think Deandre Ayton will help them. He's probably the second-best center on the market this summer behind Myles Turner.
'… But this team still has a lot of holes on the perimeter, defensively. They have very little perimeter defensive talent. They're still lacking in shooting.
'They're a team that, when you just stack 'em up, player for player -- yes, they finished third in the Western Conference last year. I'd say overall, they're either the same or a little worse.
'... The Lakers are at best, staying flat and that's with LeBron James's future and his motivation in Los Angeles still being very uncertain.'
The Lakers, of course, went 50-32 this past season before losing in five games to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round of the playoffs. Bontemps pointed out how, in his mind, several teams in the West have gotten better this offseason, including the Rockets, who have added future Hall of Famer Kevin Durant and backup center Clint Capela as well as Finney-Smith.
A highly motivated Ayton could get L.A. close to championship contention, but Bontemps' contention that the team lacks defensive ability on the perimeter is very true. However, it should still be very much a playoff team, barring injury.

LeBron James to Mavericks Trade Report Surfaces From His Former Teammate
LeBron James to Mavericks Trade Report Surfaces From His Former Teammate originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James exercised his $52.6 million player option for the 2025-26 NBA season. Bypassing the ability to enter free agency, James instead chose to remain under contract with the Lakers. That said, his future is anything but certain. Advertisement Following James' decision to opt-in, his longtime agent Rich Paul released a statement to ESPN that seemingly placed the possibility of a trade on the table. "LeBron wants to compete for a championship," Paul said to ESPN. "He knows the Lakers are building for the future. ... We understand the difficulty in winning now while preparing for the future. We do want to evaluate what's best for LeBron at this stage in his life and career." Several teams were floated as potential James suitors, including the Dallas Mavericks. In addition to No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, Dallas has two star players James won a championship alongside: Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis. Advertisement During an episode of The Hoop Collective podcast, ESPN's Tim MacMahon reported Dallas had come up in speculation as a potential James trade destination. Just days after this report, the James to Dallas rumors received a new wrinkle from one of his former teammates. In the latest episode of his Pat Bev Podcast, former Lakers guard Patrick Beverley urged his co-host Adam "Rone" Ferrone to tell the audience something pertaining to the James-Mavericks rumors. "We got a text from Pat. He said, 'I might have big news.' ... several days ago," Rone said. Beverley responded, "When did the Dallas [expletive] come out about Bron? ... I heard through a grapevine... that Bron was coming to Dallas. That's what I heard. I told you that. I don't know if it's true or not. But LeBron to Dallas. I'm hearing a lot of rumbles." Advertisement While Beverley revealed this is what he has been hearing, he ultimately guessed James will not be traded. The two played together on the Lakers during the 2022-23 season. Details on Adou Thiero's rookie contract with the Lakers
During the second round of last month's NBA draft, the Los Angeles Lakers turned the No. 55 pick into the draft rights to University of Arkansas forward Adou Thiero by making two trades. Thiero's offensive game is a work in progress, but he has the athleticism and defensive ability to help them very soon. At 6-foot-8, he's the type of athletic wing the Lakers haven't had in quite some time. He officially signed his Lakers contract on Sunday, and fans are looking forward to seeing him play in a Purple and Gold jersey. Advertisement According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, Thiero's contract is for three years and $5.95 million. The third year of the deal is a player option. Thiero, who was the No. 36 pick in the draft, averaged 15.1 points and 5.8 rebounds a game while shooting 54.5% from the field and 25.6% from 3-point range this past season. He will not participate in summer league play because of a knee injury he suffered a few months ago.
