Old names, new hopes: Heritage brands look to fresh support from new scheme
SINGAPORE - A treasure trove of antiques dating back to the Ming Dynasty – from teapots to snuff bottles – greets visitors to Chan Ngee in South Bridge Road.
The antique store was set up in 1969 as a ceramics and crafts wholesaler by Mr Goh Yong Chiang. Today, the 88-year-old runs the heritage business with his son, Mr Goh Seng Ngee, who joined him in the 1990s.
The store is one of more than 80 applicants for the SG Heritage Business Scheme, launched by the National Heritage Board (NHB) in March. To qualify, businesses must have operated in Singapore for at least 30 years and be located within the central area, among other conditions.
Those selected for the scheme will get help with branding, marketing and consultancy services. They can also use a specially designed SG Heritage Business mark on their marketing channels. Awardees will be announced in the third quarter of 2025.
Mr Goh Seng Ngee, 50, hopes Chan Ngee will be able to tap the scheme to attract younger customers. For now, his clientele is mostly regular collectors and tourists, especially ones from China.
'Traditional businesses like ours face challenges of high business operating costs, have limited exposure and may not be able to keep up with technology,' he said. 'We need to strike a balance between preserving our heritage and history, and evolving with the times to stay relevant.'
Mr Keerthi Rajendran, 39, and Mr Karthigayan Venkatesan, 40, who are co-owners of Gandhi Restaurant in Little India, have similar hopes of the scheme.

Their restaurant, which has been around for 54 years, still uses traditional cooking methods. For example, its signature onion chicken requires a full day of preparation, while its thosai and vadai flour and chutneys are blended in-house manually for better taste.
'I hope the scheme will help us improve our marketing and branding strategies to bring ourselves from a simple, next-door-neighbour kind of restaurant to an upscale one, and yet retain the heritage cooking and serving methods,' said Mr Keerthi.
While all businesses face manpower shortages, heritage businesses like his require even more hands, but struggle to attract younger people into the industry, he added.
'How are we going to survive if in the future, everyone is going to be an office-based worker or boss?' Mr Keethi said. 'What will happen to our traditional trades?'
Heritage brands also typically face challenges with technology and social media, said Mr Tong Kok Wing, director of Chop Wah On medicated oils and balms in Upper Cross Street.
'While heritage brands' experience and wisdom could be put to good use, they could be supplemented by input of youthful vigour and energy to drive their growth and innovation,' he said.
He, too, hopes the business, founded in 1916 by his grandfather, will secure official recognition as a Singapore heritage brand.

Another hopeful is Mr Haffidz Abdul Hamid, general manager of Halijah Travels. The travel agency was incorporated with the Singapore Tourism Board in 1991 by his late sister, who had been providing haj services since 1981.
When she died in 1997, Mr Haffidz and his brother left their full-time jobs to continue their sister's legacy.
'It is imperative to remind ourselves that the haj pilgrimage is a legacy business that will have to evolve, but nonetheless remain anchored as faith-based travel,' said the 64-year-old.
'We are also passionate about promoting the legacy of Kampong Glam as Singapore's historical role as the heart of haj travels in the past.'
Halijah Travels is located in a restored shophouse in Kampong Glam, adjacent to the Sultan Mosque and the Malay Heritage Centre. The heritage precinct was the heart of haj travels before the 1970s, when Singapore served as a major hub for pilgrims travelling from South-east Asia to Mecca by sea.
Boosting the profile of heritage businesses
The SG Heritage Business Scheme will significantly enhance the visibility and legitimacy of heritage businesses, said Dr David Ocon, assistant professor (practice) at Singapore Management University.
Having an official SG Heritage Business mark would allow locals and tourists to easily identify and support such businesses, reinforcing their cultural value, he added.
Being featured in national events and heritage platforms would help these businesses gain marketing exposure, while consultancy support can help them adapt to changing consumer trends and digital demands, he said.
Associate Professor Dianna Chang from the Singapore University of Social Sciences' School of Business said targeted subsidies could help selected heritage businesses ease rental costs.
She added that many young people are reluctant to take up jobs in the heritage sector, often favouring positions in larger organisations due to better job security and career advancement opportunities.
To address this, the Government can support individuals who are passionate about heritage businesses by equipping them with stronger marketing and management capabilities, she suggested.
Businesses that face technological challenges could also get subsidised technical assistance and consulting services, such as help to upgrade payment systems, she said.
She added: 'Supporting heritage brands is meaningful not only in terms of promoting local enterprises, but also in preserving Singapore's cultural legacy and offering opportunities for people to connect with the nation's history and identity, and with one another.'

Old image causes confusion over convicted ex-Kenyan leader's whereabouts

Former Kenyan governor Ferdinand Waititu was sentenced to prison on corruption charges in February 2025. But an image recently shared on social media shows Waititu at a hair transplant clinic, and not in jail as expected. However, this is misleading; the image predates Waititu's conviction and subsequent imprisonment. 'Former Kiambu governor Ferdinand Waititu, who is supposed to be in jail, spotted at a hair transplant clinic,' reads a Facebook post published on July 20, 2025. The image shows Waititu and a man in blue scrubs and a surgical cap, standing in a room in front of a sign that reads 'Artistic Hair Transplant Center'. Similar claims were published elsewhere on X (here and here) and Facebook (here and here). Waititu, the former governor of Kenya's Kiambu county, was impeached in January 2020 on charges of gross violation of the constitution, crimes under the national law and abuse of office (archived here). In February 2025, he was remanded and sentenced to a fine of Ksh 53.7 million ($413,490), or in default, 12 years in prison, for charges involving a Ksh 588 million ($4,527,600) graft case. He was also barred from vying for any political seat for 10 years (archived here and here). Waititu was first charged in the corruption case in July 2019 (archived here). Despite appealing his conviction and seeking release on bond pending appeal, Waititu has had his applications denied by the High Court twice and is being held at Nairobi's Kamiti maximum security prison (archived here, here and here). However, the image purportedly showing the former governor recently at a hair transplant clinic is old. Old image AFP Fact Check conducted reverse image searches and found that the image was published on Instagram by 'Artistic_Hair_Centre' on July 20, 2025 (archived here). 'Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu, thank you for trusting Artistic Hair Transplant Centre,' reads the post. The post led some to question if Waititu had been released from prison, as it was not clear when the photo was taken. In response, the clinic clarified: 'This photo was taken before any legal issues. We shared it to show real results from our work nothing more. We focus on professionalism, not personal matters.' Speaking to local media outlet Tuko, Jared Kimwaga, the doctor photographed with Waititu, said that he handled Waititu's hair transplant procedures in February and October 2024 (archived here). He explained that he had not seen the ex-governor since October 2024 and that the photo was reposted to showcase the kind of clients the clinic handles. AFP Fact Check contacted Kimwaga, and he reiterated: 'It is an old photo that has been used out of context. I performed two hair restoration procedures on the former governor twice last year. The recent photo was for promotional purposes.' A look at the clinic's website shows that they have promoted their work with other politicians, including former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko, though the photos are not dated (archived here). There is no credible evidence to suggest that Waititu has been released from prison.

Is Kohl's Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold in July 2025?

Kohl's (KSS) is in the thick of a strategic identity crisis, and its recent stock surge only throws the tension into sharper relief. Over the past three years, shares of the department store chain have dropped 56%. Zoom into the last 52 weeks, and it's a 36% downslide. The company's market share has steadily slipped under pressure from both brick-and-mortar rivals and e-commerce juggernauts. Internal dysfunction has only deepened the trouble. In early May, Kohl's abruptly ousted CEO Ashley Buchanan following an internal investigation, raising serious questions about leadership stability. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump's tariffs on imports have forced the company to overhaul its supply chain and rethink inventory management just to stay operationally afloat. Then came July 22. In an almost surreal twist, KSS shares skyrocketed nearly 38% on no formal news, no bullish analyst calls, no revised guidance — nothing at all except pure retail frenzy. Trading volumes surged 17 times above average, mirroring the chaotic price moves of past meme stock episodes. The fundamentals did not change overnight. But the sentiment did. And that says a lot about the environment Kohl's now operates in. About Kohl's Stock Based in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Kohl's operates nearly 1,100 retail stores across the United States and manages a nationwide e-commerce platform through its website. With a market capitalization of $1.43 billion, the company offers a broad product range spanning apparel, home goods, footwear, accessories, and beauty. Its proprietary portfolio includes Apt. 9, Croft & Barrow, Sonoma Goods for Life, and Tek Gear, among others, alongside exclusive brand partnerships such as LC Lauren Conrad and Simply Vera Vera Wang. Despite this breadth, KSS stock has been under sustained pressure until a recent surge reversed its course. Over the past month, KSS has rallied 58%, with a 33% gain occurring in just the last five trading days. The speed and scale of the move suggest speculative momentum, not fundamental recovery. KSS stock now trades at 37 times forward earnings, a valuation significantly above its five-year average and well beyond sector norms. For a retailer facing declining sales and a dividend cut to $0.125 per share, that multiple appears disconnected from its underlying financial health. Kohl's Surpasses Q1 Earnings On May 29, Kohl's unveiled its fiscal first-quarter 2025 results, numbers that, while still reflecting a business under strain, managed to beat the Street's muted expectations. Total revenue for the quarter stood at $3.23 billion, down 4.4% year-over-year (YOY) yet slightly ahead of analyst projections of $3.18 billion. Comparable sales slipped 3.9%, weighed down by continued weakness in discretionary categories and lackluster digital traffic. Other revenues declined 9.8% to $184 million. Even so, Kohl's delivered an operating income of $60 million, up 39% from the same period last year. Operating margin improved by 58 basis points to 1.9%, offering a glimpse of tighter cost controls despite sales pressure. Net loss narrowed 44% YOY to $15 million. EPS surprised to the upside, rising 45.8% from the year-ago value to a $0.13 loss versus the consensus estimate of a $0.22 loss. The unexpected beat helped soothe market nerves, although only briefly. As of quarter-end, Kohl's held $153 million in cash and cash equivalents, and total shareholders' equity stood at $3.8 billion. Net cash used in operations reached $92 million, mostly due to seasonal inventory buildup. Looking ahead, Kohl's is bracing for more turbulence. Full-year net sales are expected to decline between 5% and 7%, while comparable sales are projected to fall 4% to 6%. Operating margin is forecast to range between 2.2% and 2.6%, with management guiding for full-year EPS between $0.10 and $0.60. Analyst sentiment mirrors that caution. Q2 EPS is projected to decline 44% YOY to $0.33. For the full fiscal year, the bottom line is expected to plunge 75% to $0.37. Even in fiscal 2026, the Street sees little recovery, forecasting another 8% drop in EPS to $0.34. What Do Analysts Expect for Kohl's Stock? The recent rally in Kohl's stock may have turned heads on trading desks, but Wall Street remains firmly unconvinced. The Street-wide consensus is a 'Moderate Sell,' shaped by structural concerns that continue to cloud the company's trajectory. Out of 12 analysts covering KSS stock, six issue a 'Hold" rating, one suggests a 'Moderate Sell,' and five recommend a 'Strong Sell" rating. Goldman Sachs recently raised its price target from $5 to $7 but kept its 'Sell' rating unchanged. The average price target stands at $7.35. That's well below where KSS stock currently trades. Even the Street-high target, set at $11, doesn't reflect the levels the stock has touched during its meme-fueled spike. It might be safe to say that Kohl's is leaning more toward uncertainty than a true rebound.
