SK Hynix posts record profits on surging AI demand
SEOUL : South Korean chip giant SK Hynix reported record quarterly profits today, thanks to soaring demand for artificial intelligence (AI).
The world's second-largest memory chip maker dominates the market for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) semiconductors and is a key supplier for US titan Nvidia.
The firm said operating profit climbed almost 70% to ₩9.21 trillion (US$6.72 billion) in the second quarter (Q2), with revenues coming in at ₩22.23 trillion – both all-time peaks.
The news comes after Taiwan chip giant TSMC last week announced a surge in net profit for Q2, topping forecasts, thanks to robust demand for AI technology, despite the threat of US tariffs on the critical sector.
SK Hynix also said net profit was up close to 70% on-year, at ₩6.99 trillion.
'An aggressive investment by global big tech companies into AI led to a steady increase in demand for AI memory,' it said in a statement.
Shipments of DRAM and NAND flash topped forecasts, boosting the bottom line.
'SK Hynix foresees that increasing competition among big tech companies to enhance inference of AI models would lead to higher demand for high-performance and high-capacity memory products,' the company added.
Shares in the firm rose more than 3% in Seoul.
South Korea is a major exporter to the US and its powerhouse semiconductor and auto industries would suffer greatly under President Donald Trump's threatened 25% tariffs.
Experts attribute SK Hynix's resilience to its growth in the DRAM market.
The firm took the lead in DRAM revenues in April, with a 36% market share, according to specialist research firm Counterpoint.
That surpassed South Korean rival Samsung for the first time and marked the first change in the top spot in more than four decades.
The company also recorded a combined US$15.5 billion in sales of DRAM and NAND in Q2, matching Samsung to jointly lead the global memory market, according to a Counterpoint report.
SK Hynix said in a conference call that 'the previous quarter began amid concerns over slowing demand due to trade tensions and broader economic uncertainty'.
However, 'strong AI-related investment by major tech firms continued to drive growth in demand for AI-oriented memory products'.
As the US has been threatening certain restrictions on semiconductor sales to China, customers' preemptive purchases 'to hedge against external risks', actually created a 'more favourable environment than initially expected', an SK Hynix official said.
The company added that despite the geopolitical situations, its production situation saw 'no change'.

Spanish teen investigated over nude AI images of classmates
MADRID: Spanish police said Sunday they were investigating a 17-year-old on suspicion of using artificial intelligence to deepfake nude images of female classmates for sale. The probe was launched after 16 young women at an educational institute in the Valencia region came forward to complain of AI-generated images of them circulating on social media and the internet. The first complaint was lodged in December by an adolescent who said an AI-generated video and faked photos resembling her 'completely naked' were posted on a social media account started under her name. As more accusations came in, police suspected the images were the work of a student in the same institute, according to a statement by the police. Tracking the IP addresses used to create the bogus accounts led them to the home of the 17-year-old now under investigation on suspicion of corruption of minors. It is not the first time that Spanish authorities have detected AI-created pornographic images of minors. The government in March said it would put forward a law to treat such deepfaked sexual imagery created by AI without consent as a crime. The bill, which Madrid claims to be a first in Europe, has yet to be passed by the parliament. – AFP

‘Govt can't do it all': Rafizi relaunches Ayuh Malaysia as movement to boost ‘third sector' social enterprises
KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 — Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli has today relaunched 'Ayuh Malaysia', a social enterprise initiative aimed at carrying out economic activities to benefit the society, rather than purely for profit. The former economy minister said Malaysia currently relies heavily on the public and private sectors to provide goods and services — with little focus on social enterprises, which he dubbed as the third sector. 'A sustainable society must have strong engagement with the third sector. At present, the ones providing goods, services, and assistance to the people are either the first sector, which is the public sector, or the second, which is the private sector. 'But the public sector has its limitations; without taxes and revenue, the government cannot continue spending indefinitely. The private sector, on the other hand, is driven by profit, so prices will keep rising,' he told reporters after launching Ayuh Malaysia here. The Pandan MP said Ayuh Malaysia was previously started in March 2022, but was disrupted by the 2022 general election and his subsequent appointment as a minister. 'In other countries, especially in situations like Malaysia's where the population is ageing, the third sector is absolutely crucial. Yet, if you go around Malaysia, hardly anyone talks about social enterprise,' Rafizi said when explaining his motivation. 'So when I was the minister of economy, during the drafting of the 13th Malaysia Plan, one key chapter was about establishing and strengthening the third sector in the country. But this needs to be driven by the people.' He said having a strong third sector will help ease the government's financial burden in the future. 'What's clear is that there will be economic benefits for the people, but more importantly, having a strong third sector will help ease the government's burden in the future,' he said. Rafizi added that Ayuh Malaysia will take six months to assess the response from the seven social enterprises participating in its pilot project. 'In Malaysia, the third sector is still in its infancy. We'll take six months to observe the response, the quality of ideas submitted, and the experience of those who step forward to lead because we want to ensure this doesn't become an avenue for people to take advantage and make money for themselves,' he said. Rafizi recently resigned from the Cabinet after losing the PKR deputy post to Nurul Izzah Anwar, the daughter of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. In March 2022, Rafizi launched the Ayuh Malaysia campaign to attract the support of voters on the fence as the country gears up for the 15th General Election. He had then said the decision to launch the campaign was taken after taking into account the results of the Johor state election and the views of various parties in PKR.
