CRIME SCENE: 1 victim dead, another wounded after North York stabbing
One man was killed and another suffered injuries in a double stabbing Sunday afternoon in North York.
Toronto Police said they responded to a call at about noon in the Wilson Ave.-Hwy. 400 area, where one man was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries and the other was hospitalized for treatment.
Acting Insp. Todd Jocko told reporters at the scene, via CP24, that the first victim died at a hospital despite life-saving measures by first responders.
He said both victims are men in their 50s, while a man in his 70s was arrested at the scene, just east of Hwy. 400, at Wilson Ave. and Beverly Hills Dr.
There was no information yet on charges or a motive.
'There is no outstanding threat to the public,' Jocko said, adding there was going to be an increased police presence in the area.
A 28-year-old man is dead after a motorcycle hit a light post early Sunday in North York.
Toronto Police said officers responded to a crash in the Suntract-Gordon Mackay Rds. area Sunday at 12:15 a.m. after the driver of a Suzuki motorcycle travelling southbound on Suntract lost control and struck a light post.
The driver suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police said they believe there were witnesses to the crash and asked them to contract investigators at 416-808-1900.
Hamilton Police are investigating a fatal overnight crash that killed two people on a mountain access road.
Police said they responded to a single-vehicle collision Sunday at about 3 a.m. on the central Claremont Access, a busy thoroughfare connecting Hamilton Mountain to the lower city, after a Chevrolet travelling southbound left the road and struck a stone wall.
The driver and a passenger were pronounced dead at the scene.

Toronto police to be out in force this weekend at east end beach ahead of Canada Day
Toronto residents should expect to see an increased police presence at Ashbridges Bay Park and Woodbine Beach Park all weekend ahead of Canada Day, police said on Friday. Insp. Michael Hayles, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service, said officers will be patrolling on horseback, on foot and all terrain vehicles for the official city fireworks display, which will be at the Ashbridges Bay Park starting at 10 p.m. Tuesday. City bylaw officers will also be there. "Please leave your fireworks at home and please remember that personal alcohol is not permitted at the beach," Hayles said. "If there is a threat to public safety, obstruction of our officers or other emergency services, officers will use their discretion in dispersing the crowd or laying charges." Simply possessing fireworks and bringing them to the beach can result in a fine, he added. Hayles said bonfires are also not allowed within Toronto parks without a permit. If residents obtain permits for a bonfire, there are only certain areas where they are permitted. Some road closures in and around Lakeshore Boulevard East will be in effect before and after the fireworks display. The city is planning fireworks displays at five other locations in Toronto: Centennial Park, Amesbury Park, Milliken Park, Stan Wadlow Park and Mel Lastman Square. There will be no fireworks display at Nathan Phillips Square. Fireworks allowed only on residents' own private property: city In a news release, the city said: "Residents are allowed to set off fireworks on their own private property without a permit before 11 p.m. on Canada Day and Victoria Day. A permit is needed to set off fireworks on all other days. "Fireworks are not permitted in City parks or on beaches, balconies, streets, parking lots or property that is not owned by the person setting off the fireworks." The misuse or illegal sale of fireworks can be reported to 311 by phone or by submitting a service request. Laura McQuillan, spokesperson for the city, said on Friday that the city is advising people to take public transit for the celebrations. "Be cognizant that there may be more traffic out there. Take transit if you can," McQuillan said. On its website, the TTC says it will provide extra service on Canada Day "to help customers travelling around the city to various events and fireworks displays."

Two men admit to helping move 8-year-old Edmonton girl's body after 2023 homicide
Two men pleaded guilty Friday for their role in the 2023 disappearance of a child who was later found dead. The pair admitted they were part of a group that participated in moving an eight-year-old girl's body from an Edmonton apartment to Maskwacis, Alta., where police found her in the bed of a truck. The girl can't be identified due to a publication ban. According to court records, separate court-ordered publication bans are also in effect for several of the other people involved in the case, including the two men who entered guilty pleas for indignity to a body. Court of King's Bench Justice Steven Mandziuk gave both men sentences of two years and nine months, agreeing to a joint submission from the Crown and defence for a sentence ranging between two and three years. With enhanced credit for time they've already spent in custody since being arrested in April 2023, each is considered to have already served their sentence. The courtroom was full of the girl's family members on Friday, many wearing shirts with the girl's face. "The victim here was an eight-year-old girl — the very picture of vulnerability. And the word indignity to remains doesn't really capture what happens in these types of crimes," Mandziuk said. "It was barbaric, callous and inhumane, and the product of a very, very poor decision." Two other men were also arrested and charged with accessory to murder and indignity to a dead body in April 2023. A 29-year-old woman is charged with first-degree murder in the case — she has yet to go to trial. Court heard that the woman was looking after the young girl at the time, but she is not a biological relative of hers. 'She had so much joy' Reading a victim impact statement in court on Friday, the girl's grandmother said the loss left the family broken. "I think of what she must have went through and it haunts me every time. I miss my baby girl so much," she said. "She loved her cousins and her family so much. She had so much joy. I'm scared for my other grandchildren." The girl's father said in his victim impact statement that he now struggles with fear that everyone could pose a risk of harming his children. "This horrendous tragedy led me down a dark, cold road — one that stripped me of any trust or faith I ever had in anyone or anything." According to an agreed statement of facts read in court, one of the men who pleaded guilty on Friday is a family member of the woman charged with murder, while the other was a friend of hers. That man, who is 68, came to the woman's apartment on the evening of April 22, 2023, and saw the eight-year-old girl's body, the agreed facts say. The next day, he drove the woman south of the city to Maskwacis, knowing that the girl's body was left behind, and no one had called an ambulance. He then drove three other men from Maskwacis to Edmonton, including the 27-year-old who's now been sentenced alongside him. The younger man told another person in the car after they started driving, "They were going to move a body but not whose body." The court heard that at the apartment, a different man put the girl's body in a hockey bag and loaded it into the trunk of the car. The group then drove back to Maskwacis. The girl's body was discovered during a police search five days later, on April 28, 2023. Mandziuk said the loss of a child, especially in a such traumatic way, has a profound and lasting impact on the people left behind. "On no level is this acceptable — no level. And it's a cold-hearted action."
