Trump calls Texas floods ‘once-in-every-200-year deal', urges alarm systems ahead of visit
In an interview with NBC News, Trump expressed support for installing flood alarms, saying, 'After having seen this horrible event, I would imagine you'd put alarms up in some form… if they see any large amounts of water or whatever it is.' Trump also defended local and federal authorities, saying: 'Nobody ever saw a thing like this coming. This is a once-in-every-200-year deal.'
He added, 'It'd be easy to blame them. I wouldn't blame them.'
Trump is expected to do an aerial tour of the worst-hit areas, a common practice to avoid disrupting on-ground recovery operations, as reported by AP. First Lady Melania Trump is also expected to accompany him, marking her second disaster site visit this term. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, along with Senators Ted Cruz and John Cornyn, will also join the president on the ground.
The flooding began in the early hours of July 4, when intense rainfall caused the Guadalupe River to rise sharply, peaking at nearly 30 feet in Hunt, located in Kerr County. Among the casualties were at least 27 children and counselors from Camp Mystic, a century-old girls' summer camp. As reported by USA Today, officials have not rescued any survivors since the day the floods hit.
Kerr County, which suffered the worst damage, lacked an audible flood alarm system. The sudden surge took many residents by surprise in a region often referred to as 'flash flood alley' due to its recurring history of rapid flooding.
Several survivors in Kerr County said they received no emergency warnings before the flash floods struck. According to a Washington Post analysis of publicly available wireless emergency data, the county did not issue its first Amber Alert-style push notification until Sunday—well after the initial flooding.
While residents did get a series of flash flood warnings from the National Weather Service (NWS), part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), these alerts were sent during the early hours of Friday, leaving residents with little time to evacuate.

TMC targeting our workers as elections near: Bengal BJP chief
State BJP president Samik Bhattacharya on Saturday alleged that Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters in Khejuri area of Purba Medinipur district brutally beat and killed two BJP workers using bamboo sticks, on Friday, likening the incident to 'Maoist-style violence'. Addressing a press conference in Kolkata, Bhattacharya alleged that, 'As elections are approaching, the TMC aggression is increasing.' 'By eleven o'clock on Friday night, during the Muharram committee ceremony at the Paschim Bhanganmari area, two of our BJP activists, Sujit Das (25) and Sajib Chandra Pike (65), were beaten by bamboo sticks. Police arrived at the scene and were trying to run the death as an accident. As the elections are approaching, the TMC aggression is increasing. In the past, the Maoists have killed BJP activists and tried to establish that they are committing suicide,' he alleged. He further said that the 'Trinamool Congress will not get success this time' in an apparent reference to the Assembly Elections to be held next year. 'People are united this time. The BJP will unite the people, all over West Bengal. For the fourth time, they will not succeed in trying to make West Bengal a West Bangladesh,' Bhattacharya said. Meanwhile, the West Bengal BJP unit on Saturday claimed that the number of voters has increased by more than 40 per cent in 46 Assembly constituencies in the state between 2011 and 2021. This is not a random trend. It is a well planned and systematic transformation carried out under political patronage, it said. 'In 46 assembly constituencies, the voter population has increased by more than 40 percent within just a decade. In 7 of them, the increase is over 50 percent. That means nearly half the current electorate is new. And we have not even considered the changes that happened after 2021 or before 2011,' the party posted on its X handle. 'Apart from these, there are 118 assembly constituencies where voter growth is between 30% and 40% percent. Among these 46 seats 10 are from Malda, 10 from South 24 Parganas, 9 from Murshidabad, 7 from Uttar Dinajpur, 4 from Dakshin Dinajpur, 2 from North 24 Parganas, 2 from Jalpaiguri, 2 from Darjeeling,' it further said. Israel, Hamas trade blame over stalled Gaza ceasefire talks
The deadlock comes amid ongoing negotiations in Qatar and intensifying pressure from families of Israeli hostages to reach a deal read more Talks aimed at securing a ceasefire in Gaza hung in the balance on Saturday (July 12) as both Hamas and Israel accused each other of obstructing efforts to end nearly 21 months of war. The deadlock comes amid ongoing negotiations in Qatar and intensifying pressure from families of Israeli hostages to reach a deal. A Palestinian source familiar with the indirect talks told AFP that Israel's proposal to keep troops in parts of Gaza was preventing agreement on a 60-day pause in fighting. On the Israeli side, a senior political official accused Hamas of 'refusing to compromise' and 'sabotaging the negotiations'. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Disputed troop presence and mediation delay A second Palestinian source said discussions had been delayed at the request of mediators until US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, arrives in Doha. One of the sticking points, according to the first Palestinian source, was Israel's plan to maintain a military presence in more than 40 percent of Gaza, confining hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians to a small zone near Rafah. 'Hamas's delegation will not accept the Israeli maps… as they essentially legitimise the reoccupation of approximately half of the Gaza Strip and turn Gaza into isolated zones with no crossings or freedom of movement,' the source said. Israeli media reported that new maps would be presented on Sunday, quoting a foreign official with knowledge of the matter. The Israeli political official countered that Hamas was 'creating obstacles' and said Israel had shown 'a willingness to show flexibility in the negotiations'. Deaths mount as strikes continue As talks stalled, Gaza's civil defence agency said over 20 people were killed across the territory on Saturday, including in an overnight airstrike on a site sheltering displaced people. 'While we were sleeping, there was an explosion… where two boys, a girl and their mother were staying,' said Bassam Hamdan, a resident of Gaza City. 'We found them torn to pieces, their remains scattered.' In southern Gaza, casualties were rushed to hospitals on donkey carts, stretchers or carried by hand. In Khan Yunis, bodies were laid out under plastic sheets outside the Nasser hospital. The Israeli military said it had attacked 'approximately 250 terrorist targets throughout the Gaza Strip' over the past 48 hours, including 'over 35 Hamas terror targets' near Beit Hanoun. The health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza said at least 57,882 Palestinians, mostly civilians, have been killed since the war began. On the Israeli side, Hamas's 7 October 2023 attack killed 1,219 people, mostly civilians, and 251 hostages were taken. Israel says 49 hostages remain in captivity, including 27 confirmed dead. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Hostage families press for a deal Thousands of Israelis rallied in Tel Aviv, urging the government to finalise a deal for hostage release. 'The window of opportunity… is open now and it won't be for long,' said Eli Sharabi, who was freed in February. Both Hamas and Israel have said that 10 hostages could be released if an agreement is reached. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated he would then be open to talks on a longer-term ceasefire, provided Hamas is disarmed. Two previous ceasefires — one in November 2023 and another from mid-January 2024 — led to the release of 105 hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. According to one Palestinian source, 'some progress' has been made on the issues of prisoner release and humanitarian aid delivery. Netanyahu, under growing pressure at home and abroad, reiterated this week that neutralising Hamas is essential for any long-term solution. 'Failure to do so,' he warned, would leave Israel with no choice but to act 'by force'. With inputs from agencies
