DMW, Legal Education Board partner to provide legal aid to OFWs
Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac and LEB Chairperson Jason Barlis signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on Monday at DMW Central Office in Mandaluyong City.
Under the agreement, law schools will open their legal aid clinics to distressed OFWs. In return, law students will gain hands-on experience working on actual migrant cases, transforming their legal education into a platform for advocacy.
'The legal worry that we can take away from our OFWs will go a very long way. The law is the best weapon against exploitation, anxiety, and all the things that can make OFWs unproductive and distressed,' Cacdac said.
LEB Chairperson Jason Barlis said the partnership not only brings justice closer to OFWs but also reshapes legal education into a purpose-driven experience.
'It's about making sure that the promise of access to justice reaches even those who are miles away from home. On the other hand, it also gives students a hands-on, purpose-driven experience that cannot be taught inside the classroom. It's in these moments that they feel the law come alive because it is applied in real life,' he added.

17 Filipino seafarers safe after Houthi Attack in Red Sea
Seventeen Filipino seafarers have safely escaped an attack by Yemen's Houthi rebels in the Red Sea, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). The incident happened on Sunday, July 6, when the Filipinos—along with Vietnamese and Romanian crew—were aboard a bulk carrier near Yemen. Armed men aboard small boats attempted to hijack the vessel, but the ship's security team managed to repel the attack. All 19 crew members were able to escape and were rescued by a passing container ship. Just last month, the Iran-backed Houthis warned they would target U.S. military ships if the U.S. participated in any military action against Iran. U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier confirmed a successful strike on Iran on June 22.

Marcos open to taxing online gaming, supports measures against gambling addiction
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is open to a Department of Finance (DOF) proposal to impose taxes on the online gaming industry, as part of efforts to regulate the sector and combat gambling addiction, Malacañang said Monday. Presidential Communications Office Undersecretary Claire Castro said the move aims to protect Filipino families by restricting access to harmful online gambling platforms. 'The President understands the dangers of gambling addiction. He will not oppose any taxation plan, as long as it's backed by solid research,' Castro said. She added that imposing taxes would go hand-in-hand with intensifying efforts against illegal or unregistered online gaming sites. The DOF's proposal also includes limiting playtime, setting cash-in ceilings, displaying responsible gambling warnings, and even banning public officials from playing online gambling games. Malacañang emphasized that all possible legislative and policy solutions to curb online gambling addiction are welcome under the Marcos administration.
