Morocco, US Strengthen Digital Partnership with High-Level AI Discussions
The meeting sought to advance digital cooperation between Rabat and Washington, building on their joint artificial intelligence initiatives launched last year.
'Productive discussions at the U.S. Department of State between Minister Amal El Fallah and Ambassador Steve Lang, Chief of Cyberspace and Digital Policy,' he posted on X.
'We reaffirmed the strong Morocco-US partnership, advancing cooperation in digital transformation and artificial intelligence to foster innovation and shared prosperity for both our nations. Promising perspectives lie ahead,' wrote the Moroccan diplomat.
Ambassador Amrani added that Minister El Fallah, who serves as Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, also held 'a productive meeting at the State Department with Ms. Leila Elmergawi, Director for Strategy and Global AI Policy.'
During this meeting, they discussed 'Morocco's ambitious AI Roadmap and the Digital Morocco 2030 plan, reaffirming their commitment to advancing AI development and digital transformation for a prosperous future.'
These discussions come on the heels of groundbreaking Morocco-US collaborations in AI. In March 2024, both countries shattered barriers by co-presenting the first-ever UN resolution on artificial intelligence.
The resolution, titled 'Seizing the Opportunities of Safe, Secure and Trustworthy Artificial Intelligence Systems for Sustainable Development,' gained support from 123 Member States before its adoption.
Following this achievement, in June 2024, both countries established the Group of Friends on Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development at the UN headquarters in New York.

This initiative was launched by Morocco's UN Ambassador Omar Hilale and US Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield. It aims to create a platform for international cooperation on AI development, with a particular focus on supporting developing countries.
Former US Secretary of State Antony Blinken acknowledged Morocco's contributions during a UN Security Council Meeting on AI last December.
'This summer, the U.S. and Morocco also established a group at the United Nations, open to all member states, where experts from every region are sharing best practices for adopting artificial intelligence,' Blinken said, describing it as 'real progress.'
The North African country is making bold strides in AI adoption. In April 2024, a parliamentary opposition group in Morocco's House of Councilors submitted a bill to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the country.
Presented by the parliamentary group of the Moroccan Labor Union, the bill aims to address the risks and illegal uses of AI technology while proposing the creation of a National Agency for Artificial Intelligence to oversee AI governance.
If approved, the agency would be responsible for implementing and monitoring a national AI strategy, fostering AI talent, and ensuring ethical AI use in Morocco.
A recent survey by the Boston Consulting Group (BCG), as part of the 2023 CCI Global Consumer Sentiment Survey, revealed that 80% of Moroccan consumers are aware of ChatGPT, while 38% actively use the AI tool.
This positions Morocco as the second-highest user of ChatGPT globally, after India, and the leader in Africa.

Rabat — More than 80 people swam to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta on Saturday in the largest irregular immigration wave of the summer. Moroccan authorities dismantled 332 human trafficking networks during the same year, defying these groups' collaborative criminal operations. Most intercepted migrants came from West Africa, accounting for 58% of the total, while migrants from the Maghreb represented 12%, and 9% came from East and Central African countries. PJD Condemns Israeli Interception of Handala, Moroccan Journalist Detention
Rabat — The Justice and Development Party (PJD) issued a statement today, condemning the Israeli Occupation Forces' (IOF) illegal interception of the humanitarian ship Handala and the detention of its passengers, including Moroccan journalist Mohamed El Bakkali. In El Bakkali's pre-recorded message before the interception of the Handala ship, he called on the Moroccan government and human rights organizations to secure their release. 'If you are seeing this video, the Handala ship has been intercepted by Israeli Forces… and most likely, we have been abducted and are being illegally detained,' the Al Jazeera journalist said. PJD condemned the interception of the ship and the arrest of the Moroccan journalist along with its peaceful activists, calling on Moroccan autZionisthorities to take immediate action to secure El Bakkali's release. 'What draws attention and condemnation is that the piracy of this humanitarian and peaceful ship was carried out by the sea pirates in international waters, in clear violation of all relevant international laws,' PJD said. PJD also condemned the total silence over similar incidents by the IOF without the international community's intervention. The party asserts that this encourages Israel to 'continue its actions and brutality without regard for laws, charters, or international institutions, threatening and undermining international peace and security.' The IOF intercepted the Handala ship on Saturday, with the Israeli Foreign Ministry claiming that the ship is part of 'unauthorized attempts to break the blockade.' West Ham and Wolves in race for Amine Adli
West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers are both interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen forward Amine Adli this summer. The 25-year-old Morocco international, who is keen on a move to England, is valued at around £23m ($30.9m) by the Bundesliga side. Adli won the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal with Leverkusen in 2023-24, contributing 10 goals and 12 assists in 42 appearances across all competitions. However, his 2024/25 campaign was hampered by a broken fibula, which sidelined him for over three months. He returned in January but managed only two goals and two assists. French football journalist Julien Laurens reported: 'I'm told that Amine Adli is attracting interest from Premier League clubs. Wolves and West Ham are keen on the Bayer Leverkusen forward. He is keen on a move to England. His valuation is around £23m.' West Ham are looking to bolster their attack after selling Mohammed Kudus to Tottenham Hotspur for £55m ($73m).
