
As Microsoft Exchange 2016 and 2019 sunset, how can privacy-conscious organisations future-proof their email?
Continuing on unsupported Exchange versions would expose businesses to serious risks: the loss of security updates, vendor support, and compatibility with other Microsoft applications. Therefore, this shift marks more than just the end of a product lifecycle; it forces IT teams to make an urgent, strategic decision: migrate to cloud-based services like Exchange Online or Microsoft 365, or stay on-prem with the upcoming Exchange Server Subscription Edition (Microsoft, 2024).
Time is running out to evaluate the next move before the sunset. With mounting pressure to act, IT teams are left with a narrow window to weigh their options. The new Exchange subscription model introduces added complexity, requiring Software Assurance on top of server licenses and CALs, which can create significant management challenges for growing teams and small to mid-sized organisations (Microsoft, 2025).

Recent breaches at major telecom, airline and healthcare providers, including Qantas, have only intensified the focus on digital sovereignty, driving sectors like education, healthcare and government to prioritise direct control over sensitive data.
In this landscape, finding a stable on-premise solution that guarantees robust security, privacy and price reliability becomes all the more crucial. Hosting email on-premises allows organisations to retain full ownership over their infrastructure and data, reducing reliance on external vendors and ensuring compliance with local or sector-specific standards such as GDPR, HIPAA, or ISO 27001. This can be particularly beneficial for teams in education, government, legal, or healthcare environments, where trust and traceability matter.
On-premises solutions can also offer key advantages in data governance. For IT teams managing large-scale infrastructure, minimising unpredictable licensing costs and integrating with existing systems is critical. AI sparks new jobs as roles shift and evolve toward 2030
Artificial intelligence is not just changing job structures, but also giving rise to entirely new roles that could define the workforce in the coming decade. While recent headlines have highlighted job reductions driven by AI, such as the layoff of 9,000 employees at Microsoft, multiple industry observers suggest that the technology's long-term impact is equally about job transformation and creation. Debate on displacement Concerns about job loss due to AI-driven automation have dominated public discourse. A 2023 report from McKinsey projected that as many as 800 million workers worldwide may see their roles replaced or altered by automation by 2030. The same study noted, however, that artificial intelligence is also likely to generate more employment in areas where technology augments rather than replaces human effort, particularly in sectors involving complex problems, creativity, or decision-making. OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman, discussing the shifting landscape, commented on the emergence of new types of work: a shift towards jobs requiring AI supervision, creativity, and advanced problem-solving skills. In remarks on AI's impact in office settings, Ford Chief Executive Officer Jim Farley predicted that artificial intelligence could result in the reduction of half of all white-collar positions. Farley added that such changes are likely to spur the creation of new forms of work centred on partnership between people and machines. "We're watching an evolution, not an extinction. AI is changing what humans do, not eliminating the need for them. The future workforce will be more hybrid, combining machine intelligence with human judgment," says Gavin Yi, CEO of Yijin Hardware, a global leader in precision CNC manufacturing. New roles on the horizon Industry experts and employers have begun outlining specific roles that artificial intelligence is likely to spawn by the end of the decade, with some already being advertised and filled. One such job is the prompt engineer. This position is focused on constructing detailed prompts that guide generative AI tools — such as ChatGPT — to produce desired outputs. Prompt engineers require a combination of logical reasoning, linguistic skill, and creative thinking. Organisations across technology, law, and education have started seeking out candidates for these roles. "Prompt engineering is to AI what coding was to the early days of the internet," says Yi. Another role gaining traction is that of the AI ethics officer. With artificial intelligence now having far-reaching applications in areas like credit assessment and criminal justice, companies are expected to need specialists who develop and monitor guidelines for fairness, transparency, and compliance with evolving international regulations. The interface between healthcare and technology is also expected to yield new jobs. The AI-assisted healthcare technician is envisioned as a professional able to operate and manage AI diagnostic tools, interpret data, and work directly alongside medical practitioners and patients. Manufacturing and logistics sectors are investing in intelligent machinery, but those systems require oversight. The AI maintenance specialist is likely to merge traditional mechanical expertise with a strong understanding of AI system behaviours. "The factory worker of tomorrow won't just hold a wrench. They'll monitor dashboards and algorithms too," Yi explains. There is also growing recognition of AI's environmental impact. The sustainable AI analyst is projected to focus on ensuring that artificial intelligence systems are developed and operated using minimal energy, maximising efficiency and supporting broader corporate sustainability objectives. Creative industries stand to be reshaped by artificial intelligence as well. The position of AI-enhanced creative director would blend human creative leadership with the use of machine-generated content, enabling experimentation at greater scale and efficiency. Finally, with artificial intelligence being integrated into daily work tools and public sector processes, the need for AI literacy educators is expected to rise. These professionals would be dedicated to instructing colleagues, students, and government personnel in effective and ethical use of AI technologies. Workforce adaptation Yi cautions against planning for roles that may soon vanish, stating: "In 2010, nobody trained to be a social media manager. By 2020, it was a core role in nearly every company," he says. "In 2025, we're already seeing new jobs emerge. The smartest thing anyone can do is pay attention to where AI is creating opportunity, not just where it's causing fear." He recommends prioritising skills such as problem-solving, adaptability, communication, and at least a basic knowledge of how AI systems operate, as these are likely to remain relevant. "AI won't kill jobs," Yi says. "But it will make some jobs feel obsolete. People who learn how to work with AI instead of against it will come out ahead."

Qantas cyber attack: Culprits and motive unknown
A major Australian airline will soon be able to tell the six million customers whose data was stolen by cyber criminals exactly what type of personal information was harvested. In an update on Friday, Qantas also said the group believed responsible for the incident remained unclear and that it had not received a ransom request. The hack, revealed earlier this week, occurred on a third-party system used by a call centre working for Qantas. Sensitive data such as credit card details, personal financial information, passport details and Qantas Frequent Flyer accounts were not exposed. But millions of customers did have names, dates of birth, and email addresses stolen. ADVERTISEMENT Asked by 1News whether any New Zealanders were affected, the airline would only say the "majority" of affected customers were in Australia. Qantas next week will contact customers individually to tell them exactly what type of personal data was "contained in the system" or compromised. "I want to apologise again for the uncertainty this has caused," chief executive Vanessa Hudson said in a statement. "We're committed to keeping our affected customers informed with regular updates as our investigation progresses." Qantas, which continues to work with the government authorities to investigate the incident, reaffirmed that there has been no further threat in the system and that it remains secure. Multiple cyber experts believe the group responsible for the attack is called Scattered Spider, a cabal of young cyber criminals living in the US and the UK. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation recently warned that the group was targeting the airline sector by impersonating legitimate users to bypass multi-factor authentication and access systems. ADVERTISEMENT Airlines such as America's Hawaiian Airlines and Westjet have faced cyber attacks in the past fortnight. Qantas has rolled out additional security measures to counteract any more potential threats and increase detection. These include more security measures for frequent flyer accounts by introducing "additional identification" for account changes. "We are treating this incredibly seriously and have implemented additional security measures to further strengthen our systems," Hudson said. "Our customers can be assured that we have the right expertise and resources dedicated to resolving this matter thoroughly and effectively." Qantas also warned scammers are already impersonating the airline in the wake of the attack and told customers to be vigilant. The airline will never contact customers requesting passwords, booking reference details or sensitive login information. ADVERTISEMENT "If customers do receive any suspicious emails, text messages or calls from someone purporting to be Qantas you can report this via our dedicated support line, Scamwatch, or contact local authorities," it said. In the wake of the hack, Qantas has received more than 5000 customer enquiries. Meanwhile, legal experts suggest the incident could lead to a class action against Qantas, after compensation claims were made against Optus and Medibank after major breaches in 2022.

Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson apologises to customers for data breach

"What I would first like to say is acknowledge the impact to all our customers and, first and foremost, I'd like to apologise to them," Vanessa Hudson said in an interview with Channel Seven in Athens overnight. "I know this data breach is a serious concern. I know the stress that it has created for many, many millions of customers. "And so, right up front, I want to say we take this seriously and we are going to do everything that we can to communicate transparently." Hudson said the breach occurred when a cybercriminal infiltrated one of the airline's call centres and accessed a service platform that enabled them to get access to customer data. She said the criminals accessed "principally customer names, also phone numbers and frequent flyer numbers as well". "That is something that we are very concerned about and we are absolutely doing everything that we can to rectify this situation," she said. "What I can also say, though, is that that the threat has been contained and the systems are now secure, and our number-one focus is to support customers through this process." "Part of the steps that we're taking [involves being] ... really transparent with customers, but then also obviously next week we'll be following up and giving our customers the information that they need to understand how the specific data pertaining to them has potentially been breached in this." Hudson said the company had invested "tens of millions" of dollars in cyber security and "that's been increasing year on year" but criminals were getting more sophisticated. "We take cybersecurity incredibly seriously, and we have got absolute focus right across our organisation, from training to system controls to system alerts in this instance," she said. "Unfortunately, the cybercriminal was able to get through." Hudson said Qantas was now working with the federal government to "investigate this right through to the end". "These are criminal cybercriminals and we have involved the AFP and we've involved the government cybersecurity team," she said. She noted the cybercriminals did not get access to customers' passport information, credit card information or password information. "Your frequent flyer accounts, from a customer perspective, are secure," she said. "We have not had passport information breached. We have not had credit card information breached and we have not had password information breached." Hudson said Qantas had provided "significant training" to employees but cybercriminals were getting more apt at breaching security measures. "We are going to learn from this. We are going to do a full investigation," she said. Hudson said the airline had now "strengthened and increased controls" and would continue to build its defences against future breaches. But she said the reality for all organisations was "we live in a world where our cybercriminals are global". "They [cyber criminals] are good at what they do. They are constantly innovating in terms of what we do. And so that is why we are constantly going to be improving our systems as we go forward as well." The company's reputation has been battered in recent years. That has included coping penalties for misleading customers by selling tickets on flights that had already been cancelled. Former Qantas CEO Alan Joyce also faced heat in parliamentary hearings over rising profits and airfares despite growing customer dissatisfaction. Asked whether the cyber breach would further dent the airline's standing with customers, Hudson said "trust is something that is earned" and "comes from being up-front and transparent and that is what we are doing".
