Woman jumps into river in suicide bid,survives by clinging to tree overnight
Roopa Ambaler's suicide attempt was blamed on harassment by her lenders.
Fire and emergency service personnel rescued her using a boat and shifted her to the Ranebennur govt hospital.
Roopa and her husband live at Rattihalli town, Harihar taluk, where she runs an incense stick-making business. She borrowed money from banks and private lenders.
According to her husband Shivu, she left their home several days ago. She allegedly jumped into the river Wednesday night near Ukkadagatri, about 4km away, and spent the entire night holding onto a small tree near Nitapalli.
A farmer, during his morning visit to the river Thursday, heard her calls for help and alerted the authorities.
An emergency response team, including the fire brigade and police, arrived promptly and recused her.
Haveri deputy commissioner Vijay Mahantesh Danammanavar indicated Roopa attempted the extreme step following harassment by the lenders. "Appropriate measures would be taken if any harassment was confirmed," he said, adding that the woman was under medical care.

In her complaint, Roopa said she had borrowed Rs 48 lakh from private lenders – Chennabasappa Kittad from Kunchur, Ramesh from Totaganti and Ramesh Hosamani, Jetteppa Malagondar and Saroja Hurakadli from Rattihalli. She stated that she had been paying interest on the borrowings and cleared approximately 50% of the principal. However, business losses prevented further repayments.

Truck driver who ran over three pedestrians in 2023 gets 5 years' jail
Noida: Two years after a truck driver ran over three pedestrians, an additional sessions court in GB Nagar sentenced him to five years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 51,000. He was found guilty under Section 279 of the IPC for negligent and rash driving, and also under Section 304 of the IPC for causing unintentional deaths because of negligence. Judge Somprabha Mishra said that both sentences would run concurrently, and it would be adjusted against the term already spent in jail. No arrests yet in Datia ASI suicide case
Bhopal: Two days after booking two police station in charges, a constable and a local man accused of illegal sand mining over the suicide of an assistant sub-inspector in Datia, police are yet to make any arrests. The four were named by ASI Pramod Pawan in a video recorded shortly before his death on July 22. They face charges of abetment to suicide and offences under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. "Investigation is going on, arrests are yet to be made," the additional SP Datia, Sunil Shivhare, told TOI. Those named in the FIR, include Godan police station incharge Arvind Singh Bhadoria, Thorat police station in charge Anfasul Hasan, constable Roop Narayan Yadav, and alleged sand mafia member Arvind alias Bablu Yadav. The FIR was filed after a preliminary investigation and legal review of both the video message and a letter written by the deceased, on July 22, addressed to the Superintendent of Police (SP), Datia.
