Dibrugarh: Cabinet ministers from Assam and Arunachal Pradesh have held crucial talks to resolve decades-old boundary disputes, marking another step towards ending one of the region's most persistent administrative challenges.
The fifth meeting of regional committees representing Assam's Dhemaji district and Arunachal Pradesh's Lower Siang and East Siang districts convened at the ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute at Gogamukh in Dhemaji on Tuesday. The session was jointly chaired by Assam cabinet minister Jayanta Mallabaruah and Arunachal Pradesh cabinet minister Kento Jini.
The committees focused on 13 unresolved border disputes between the districts, with discussions aimed at formulating time-bound solutions to all outstanding issues.
"A consensus was built, and we are moving towards an amicable solution," said Mallabaruah, reflecting the cooperative tone that has defined recent inter-state negotiations. Echoing the optimism, Jini said, "The discussions were productive. I'm hopeful that under the visionary leadership of both chief ministers, we'll reach a permanent resolution within the next two months. This will further strengthen the bond of brotherhood between our states.

The meeting was part of a broader reconciliation push launched after the historic Namsai Declaration, signed in July 2022 by Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu. The agreement laid out a framework for resolving disputes involving 86 villages along the shared 804km border.
The Assam-Arunachal Pradesh boundary dispute dates back to 1951, when the North-East Frontier Tract — later renamed Arunachal Pradesh — was separated administratively from Assam without clearly defined borders.
The issue persisted even after Arunachal Pradesh attained statehood in 1987, leading to administrative challenges and periodic friction between border communities.
Senior officials from both states attended the meeting. Assam's delegation included minister Ranoj Pegu, MP Pradan Baruah, MLA Bhubon Pegu, and Lakhimpur DC Rahul Suresh Javir. Arunachal Pradesh was represented by deputy speaker Kardo Nyigyor, MLA Tojir Kadu, and Lower Siang DC Rujjum Rakshap.
The collaborative model marks a shift from the adversarial stances that have historically defined northeast border disputes. By forming joint committees with shared leadership and equal representation, both states have embraced dialogue and mutual accommodation over rigid territorial claims.
The next phase of talks will focus on practical mechanisms for demarcation and joint administration of previously disputed areas — bringing the states closer to resolving a 74-year-old territorial uncertainty.

Porvorim: Chief minister Pramod Sawant told the House on Wednesday that the Goa Cricket Association (GCA) is not serious about constructing a stand in Pernem for which 1.89 lakh sqm has been leased to it by govt. He said that eight years have passed, and the GCA hasn't even applied to the PWD for road access. In two more years, at the end of the ten-year lease, the land will be taken back by govt if construction does not begin, he said. Sawant said that last year, a show cause notice was issued to GCA, but the reply it provided was not satisfactory. Sawant said that the land is prime property today, with Manohar International Airport and the Ayush hospital in the vicinity. He also said that another govt department could put the land to better use. The CM also said that GCA has paid only Rs 9.4 crore to govt of the Rs 19 crore it was to pay. 'We issued a show cause notice to them last year, asked why should the lease not be terminated, and why the land should not be diverted for another project. They have not acquired the required permissions needed to create the ground,' he said. The CM, however, said that this is not an option. 'There are 153 grounds across Goa, but hardly 10-15 are being utilised. In Mencurem, I saw a ground with toilets and all facilities, but which is not being put to use. No other state has such facilities. There is one ground in every taluka. At this rate, in Goa, each panchayat will have a ground or I am afraid it will be two grounds per panchayat,' said Sawant. He said that GCA can identify land elsewhere if they cannot construct the project there for some reason. Leader of opposition Yuri Alemao said that govt has not added any penalty clause in the lease for GCA if it does not execute the project within the ten-year period. Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar said that GCA has not even objected to high tension power lines going over the land.

Govt planning to install CCTVs in schools
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: The Odisha govt is considering installing CCTV cameras across all govt and private schools, replicating the surveillance framework already in place in CBSE-affiliated institutions, school and mass education minister Nityananda Gond said on Wednesday. "The govt is exploring various ways to strengthen the child protection mechanism on school campuses and the education department is discussing this and related plans for immediate implementation of CCTV cameras to ensure safety and security of children," Gond said. Following the suicide of a college student in Balasore on July 12, govt has asked all schools and offices in the school and mass education department to form Internal Complaints Committees (ICC), in line with the provisions of the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act. "Instructions have already been issued for setting up ICC committees and ensuring that they are functional. Besides, training of these committees will be initiated soon so that they operate effectively and sensitively address complaints from students," Gond added. Kolhapur: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday agreed with Governor C P Radhakrishnan's statement about the language conflict likely being a deterrent for investors in Maharashtra. Speaking in Pandharpur on Wednesday, Fadnavis said: "Whatever the Governor has said is correct. Also, it is wrong to drag him into any political debate." On Tuesday, at a book launch event, the Governor addressed the language row, questioning whether he would miraculously learn to speak in Marathi if someone assaulted him. Recently, videos have emerged depicting the alleged assaults of non-Marathi speakers by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Shiv Sena (UBT) workers for not using the local language. Reacting to the videos, Radhakrishnan said: "If we spread this kind of hatred, then which investor will come here? No investor will come, no industry will come. In the long run, this will harm Maharashtra." Recounting his own experience, the Governor had said that when he was an MP in Tamil Nadu, he saw a group beating up another because they were not speaking in Tamil.
