NCW takes suo moto cognisance of alleged sexual assault of intern in IIT Madras campus
National Commission for Women on Saturday has taken suo moto cognisance regarding the alleged sexual harassment of an intern at IIT Madras campus, urging Tamil Nadu's Director General of Police for a fair and time bound investigation and directing the authorities to ensure that psychological support is given to the victim. The accused, Roushan Kumar (22), was arrested by Chennai police on June 27 for allegedly harassing the woman by using a stick and pulling her hair, according to officials.
Releasing a statement on X (formerly Twitter), NCW said, 'National Commission for Women has taken suo moto cognizance of a media report regarding the sexual harassment of a 20-year-old woman intern at IIT-Madras by a food court employee on campus.'
Calling for a fair and time-bound investigation along with ensuring psychological support to the victim, the statement added, "Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar has written to the DGP, Tamil Nadu, calling for a fair and time-bound investigation under relevant provisions of BNS, 2023. NCW has also directed the authorities to ensure."
All India Students' Federation has also announced a protest, calling for ensuring women safety in the campus at 11 AM on Saturday.
According to officials, on the night of June 26, around 9.20 PM, the accused used a stick and pulled the woman's hair, according to complainant. The accused is working in the campus' Isthara food court. Based on the complaint and evidence collected, the accused was arrested, officials said.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.

Jasbhir had reportedly issued threats following the fallout, accusing Shah of tarnishing his reputation. On the morning of the incident, Sunny attempted to contact Shah via WhatsApp and then had the hotel reception call Shah's room to say he was waiting at the lobby, the report further added. Shah, along with his friend Sameer, went downstairs where Sunny asked them to wait for Jasbhir, who never turned up. When Shah decided to leave after waiting for 15 minutes, Sunny and Billa allegedly became aggressive, threatening to kill him unless he stepped outside. Police said the two men forcibly led Shah to the parking area where Sunny hit him on the head and then stabbed him with a screwdriver, accusing him of ruining Jasbhir's career. As Shah cried for help, hotel staff and guests rushed to the scene. Sameer tried to intervene but was restrained by Billa during the attack. While the attackers fled, Shah was taken to a nearby hospital and later filed a police complaint. Acting swiftly, Bengaluru police arrested Jasbhir, Sunny, and Billa. A woman in Bengaluru has allegedly killed her pet dog and kept its decomposing body hidden in her apartment for days, in what appears to be a case of occult ritualistic accused, Triparna Paik, originally from West Bengal, allegedly slit the throat of her Labrador four days ago. Pune 'godman' installs spy app to film devotees, forces them into obscene acts
A man posing as a godman was arrested in Pune for allegedly secretly recording devotees through a spy app, forcing them into doing obscene acts and pushing them towards solicitation after matter came to light when a 39-year-old man filed a complaint with the police, alleging that the accused, identified as Prasad alias Dada Bhimrao Tamdar, installed a spy app on his mobile phone. The spy app was used to remotely access private data and personal lives of the devotees, the complainant accused claimed to possess divine powers and used his influence to manipulate and exploit followers, the complaint said. Police said the accused used an app called Air Droid Kid, a hidden surveillance tool, to record the movements, conversations, and actions of several devotees. He would invite followers under the pretext of conducting secret healing rituals and spiritual arose when a few devotees noticed irregularities in their phone settings and the fake godman's behaviour. This led to a formal police complaint and subsequent the raid, police seized the accused's mobile phone, which contained objectionable content and multiple video clips recorded without the followers' Vibhute, the senior Police Inspector of Pune's Bavdhan Police Station, said a case was registered against the accused under Sections 318(4) (cheating) and 75(1) (sexual harassment) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), along with relevant provisions of the Maharashtra Anti-Superstition and Black Magic were examining the accused's other digital devices and cloud storage to trace the extent of the crime.
