Adolis Garcia leads 14-hit attack as Rangers thrash O's
July 2 - Adolis Garcia had three hits and drove in four to back six solid innings from ace Jacob deGrom as the Texas Rangers walloped the Baltimore Orioles 10-2 on Tuesday in the middle game of a three-game series in Arlington, Texas. Alejandro Osuna hit his first career home run, Corey Seager and Jonah Heim added two hits each and Marcus Semien scored three times as the Rangers evened the series and snapped a two-game losing streak. Texas outhit the Orioles 14-7. deGrom (9-2) was not as dominant as he was on June 25 when he carried a no-hitter into the eighth against Baltimore, but he was still very good. deGrom allowed two runs on five hits over six innings while walking one and striking out six to win his fifth straight decision. Jacob Latz pitched the final three innings to earn the first save of his career. Brandon Young (0-3) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks in four innings for the Orioles. He struck out four. Ramon Urias had two hits and Gary Sanchez had a two-run homer to lead Baltimore's offense. The Rangers struck first with three runs in the third. Sam Haggerty and Josh Smith singled to open the frame and Marcus Semien walked with one out to load the bases. Garcia followed with a single to center that scored Haggerty and Smith. One out later, Heim singled home Semien to give deGrom a three-run cushion. Baltimore pared its deficit to 3-2 in the fourth when Sanchez belted a homer that enabled Gunnar Henderson, who singled, to score in front of him. Texas got those runs back in the fifth when the 22-year-old Osuna ripped a two-out, two-run homer to right off Orioles reliever Matt Bowman. Garcia's single in the sixth off Bowman pushed across Seager and Semien to expand the lead to 7-2. Texas added three runs in the eighth after Orioles reliever Gregory Soto hit Seager with a pitch and walked Semien and pinch hitter Michael Helman to load the bases. A wild pitch allowed Seager to trot home, and Justin Foscue followed with a two-run double. --Field Level Media

Matthew Boyd pitches Cubs past Guardians, his former team
July 2 - Matthew Boyd allowed two runs over seven strong innings against his most recent former club as the Chicago Cubs beat the visiting Cleveland Guardians 5-2 on Tuesday night. Carson Kelly ripped a two-run double during Chicago's three-run second and finished with three RBIs. Boyd (8-3) gave back two runs in the fourth inning, but the Cubs won for the fourth time in six games. The left-hander permitted five hits and a walk while striking out five for his sixth quality start in seven outings and his club-leading 12th in 2025. Boyd, 34, went 2-2 with a 2.28 ERA in 11 regular-season and playoff starts for the 2024 Guardians in his return from elbow surgery. Chicago's Brad Keller pitched around a walk in the eighth, and Daniel Palencia tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his ninth save. Kelly highlighted the breakout second with his two-run double, and he added a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Chicago's Seiya Suzuki hit a leadoff home run in the sixth inning, and Michael Busch added three hits with an RBI. Carlos Santana had two hits for the Guardians, who have been outscored 32-8 during a five-game losing streak. Cleveland's Gavin Williams (5-4) allowed four runs on seven hits and four walks over 5 2/3 innings. He fanned two. Williams retired the side on seven pitches in the first, but the Cubs unloaded an inning later. Pete Crow-Armstrong, Dansby Swanson and Busch opened the frame with consecutive singles, the last of the RBI variety. Then Kelly lined a Williams sweeper into the left-center-field gap to score a pair. Chicago let Williams off the hook from further damage in the frame when Kelly was thrown out while trying to score on a potential passed ball before Nico Hoerner and Matt Shaw were each picked off first base. Cleveland got back in the game in the fourth. Santana opened with a double, and after Lane Thomas walked, scored on Nolan Jones' single. Thomas came home via Angel Martinez's sacrifice fly to right, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Suzuki made it a two-run game when he skied a Williams pitch into the left field bleachers for his third homer in his past two games at Wrigley Field. --Field Level Media
