Spy planes, minesweepers: Nod for 1L crore purchases
NEW DELHI: The defence ministry gave preliminary nod Thursday to three major acquisition projects and seven smaller ones, collectively worth over Rs 1 lakh crore, ranging from specialised spy aircraft and advanced minesweepers to quick-reaction air defence missiles and underwater autonomous vessels.
The biggest project to get "acceptance of necessity" (AoN), which is just the first step in the long-winded procurement process, was for the indigenous construction of 12 mine countermeasure vessels for around Rs 44,000 crore, which will take almost a decade, sources told TOI.
These specialised warships, each with a displacement of 900-1,000 tonne, will be capable of detecting, tracking and destroying underwater mines laid by enemy forces to choke harbours and ports, disrupt shipping and maritime trade.
QRSAMs designed to intercept hostile fighters
These specialised warships are crucial amid the expanding maritime collaboration between China and Pakistan. At present, the Navy makes do with just "clip-on mine countermeasure suites" mounted on some ships to plug the major capability gap.
The second big project was the Rs 36,000 crore procurement of the new quick-reaction surface-to-air missile (QRSAM) systems developed by
DRDO
, with three regiments for the Army and three squadrons for IAF.
Overall, the Army Air Defence has projected a requirement of 11 such regiments. These highly mobile QRSAMs, designed to intercept hostile fighters, helicopters and drones at ranges up to 30km, will add to the country's multilayered air defence network that played a crucial role in thwarting multiple waves of Turkish-origin drones and Chinese missiles launched by Pakistan during Operation Sindoor May 7-10 hostilities.
The third major project was for three ISTAR (intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition & reconnaissance) planes, designed to identify and help target high-value enemy targets on ground with greater precision and accuracy by fighter jets & missiles, for around Rs 10,000 crore.
These aircraft will be equipped with a wide array of indigenous sensors & systems developed by DRDO, like synthetic aperture radars, electro-optical and infrared sensors, for gathering "actionable intelligence" in real time on enemy infrastructure, build-ups and movements.
Another project granted AoN was for semi-submersible autonomous vessels for ISR missions. They will be acquired under 'Make-II' category project, where prototype development is funded by the industry. AoNs were accorded for procurement of armoured recovery vehicles, electronic warfare systems and tri-Service integrated common inventory management system for better supply chain management.

Despite some easing, capacity utilisation remained constrained due to skilled labour shortages, rising living costs and growing competition. Larger contracts are helping sustain operations, but skilled labour shortages and retail sector weakness continue to pose challenges for some respondents, it noted. The new orders index edged down slightly, landing at minus 13.8, a similar rate to the previous month. Since mid-2024, the indicator has shown a gradual trend of improvement. Input volumes fell by 8.9 points in June to minus 11.7, reversing May's gains and matching earlier lows. Some respondents noted signs of enquiries picking up, though overall demand remained soft and reduced orders reflected a cautious outlook for customer spending in June. Market conditions remain strained as global volatility, regulatory changes and competition from imports continue to disrupt supply chains and curtail orders. Pricing indicators showed mixed results in June. The sales price indicator increased to 5.5, while the input prices indicator decreased to 36.5. The gap between sales prices and input costs improved by narrowing to 31.0 in June. However, the wide gap continues to point to margin pressures. The wages indicator remained stable at 36.8, and it has been steady in trend terms since late 2024. TG on Cong's radar for exploitation after HP, KA: BJP chief
Hyderabad: Telangana BJP chief N Ramchander Rao criticized the Congress regime, alleging extreme injustice toward Backwards Classes (BCs), Scheduled Castes (SCs), and Scheduled Tribes (STs). He said on Friday, Congress has effectively undermined democracy through the imposition of Emergency, and its slogans—'Jai Bapu,' 'Jai Bhim,' and 'Jai Samvidhan'—have betrayed their true meaning due to the party's actions. Congress has violated justice and constitutional values, he added. Ramchander Rao said that the Congress party continually deceives the people with empty slogans. On the other hand, its true agenda works against them. By claiming to support a 'Samajika Samara Bheri,' Congress is trying to mislead the people of Telangana once again. He asked, 'How will this government, which has failed to fulfil a single promise in its one-and-a-half-year rule, justify its actions to the public?' The State BJP chief pointed out that the Congress party, while chanting 'Jai Bapu,' has, however, weakened Gandhiji's vision of village self-government. 'Their failure to hold local body elections in the state and the pending Rs. 1,200 crore for village development work are against the spirit of Gandhiji's principles,' he said. Moreover, while asserting 'Jai Bhim,' Congress has actually taken tribal lands in areas like Lagacharla and Kondagal, sent bulldozers onto uncultivated lands, framed cases against ST farmers, and closed down Gurukuls. Before they chant 'Jai Samvidhan,' the Congress party must acknowledge its own history. The party that imposed the Emergency in 1975 and undermined democracy has no right to preach about the Constitution. Mallikarjun Kharge is visiting Telangana on Friday, as if all of this has been forgotten. The crucial question on the minds of the people is clear: 'With what face is the Congress party holding this meeting? What more is left to exploit? Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, and Telangana have all become endless vessels for Congress's looting.' The Congress government, which announced six guarantees and thirteen promises in Telangana, has yet to fully implement any of them. Is it social justice for Congress to harm BCs under the guise of a caste census and include Muslims in the BC quota? Their promises are merely words, and this government's intention appears to be deceiving the people with false slogans. Congress is not holding this meeting for the sake of social justice but rather to undermine it. The people of Telangana will not be misled again.

Cong must name its meeting ‘Samajika Anyaya Samara Bheri': Bandi Sanjay
Hyderabad: Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar questioned the Congress party holding the 'Samajika Samara Bheri' (public meeting on struggles for Social Justice) in the city, attended by AICC Chief Mallikarjun Kharge. He said on Friday, the Congress party has ruled the 'country and our state for more than half a century, yet has never appointed a Backward Class (BC) person as Prime Minister or Chief Minister.' It exposes the betrayal of the people, especially as they have failed to implement even the six guarantees that would primarily benefit Dalits, backwards classes, and weaker sections. Against this backdrop, he demanded the justification for holding the meeting. He demanded that AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge answer the people. Otherwise, this meeting should be renamed to 'Social Injustice Samara Bheri.' He said in contrast to the Congress, the BJP appointed Ram Nath Kovind, a Dalit; Draupadi Murmu, a tribal; and Abdul Kalam, a minority, as President. The BJP's history includes providing positions to 27 OBCs, 12 Dalits, 6 minorities, and 8 women in the central cabinet—a historic achievement. The BJP has also appointed him, a BC, as a central minister. Sanjay Kumar noted that he, along with other BC leaders like Dr. K. Laxman and Bandaru Dattatreya, has received significant positions. The Congress party, which once mocked Modi—who also comes from a BC background—as a 'chaiwala' if he were Prime Minister, has much to answer for. The Karimnagar MP recalled Modi's announcement that if the BJP comes to power in Telangana, a BC will become the Chief Minister. He further challenged Congress on how many BCs have been appointed in the Congress state's cabinet, 'even though they claim that BCs make up more than 50 per cent of the population.' He pointed out that if BC leader Ponnam Prabhakar had been given a position, it would have been a step toward justice for BCs. How can Congress justify holding a social justice rally when they have denied BC representation? He also criticized the Congress for failing to provide women with promised financial support, such as Rs. 2,500 per month, Rs. 4,000 as a pension, Rs. 4,000 as unemployment benefits, Rs. 5 lakh in assurance for students, and Rs. 21,000 per acre for farmers, along with bonus payments. Why have they failed to deliver on the 420 promises in their manifesto, including the six guarantees? AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge needs to address these questions at the social justice rally, he demanded. Regarding the shortage of fertilisers, he stated that the Congress and BRS parties are unfairly blaming the central government for the urea shortage as the local body elections approach. Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao, who is experienced, is being misled by wrong information. During the last agriculture season, 'Telangana required 9 lakh metric tons of urea, but the central government supplied 12 lakh metric tons. It was 3 lakh metric tons more than what the state of Telangana requested. The Centre is willing to provide the same or more during the current agriculture season.' However, he questioned where the additional urea that remained from the earlier agriculture season went and criticised the state for blaming the Centre without accounting for these discrepancies. 'The onus is on the state government to take appropriate action if there are any hurdles. The Centre is willing to consider Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao's requests favourably. The state must communicate the facts to the public.
