US, UK upgrade Egypt travel advisories in recognition of stability - Tourism

Al-Ahram Weekly19-07-2025
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tamim Khallaf welcomed on Friday the recent decisions by the United States and the United Kingdom to upgrade their travel advisories for Egypt to Level Two.
In a statement, Khallaf noted that Egypt has been placed under the US State Department's Level Two: Exercise Increased Caution category, alongside countries such as France and Germany, describing the move as a "notable positive step."
He also highlighted the updated UK travel advisory, which emphasized that nearly one million British citizens visit Egypt annually—a reflection, he said, of the country's stable and secure environment.
Khallaf stressed that these updates are the result of extensive diplomatic efforts by Egypt's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its embassies abroad to improve Egypt's international standing.
Before the change, the US travel advisory had placed Egypt at Level Three: Reconsider Travel, urging Americans to avoid visiting due to safety concerns. The UK also maintained more restrictive guidance for certain areas, especially outside of major tourist zones.
The revised travel guidance is expected to boost tourism flows and support Egypt's economy, strengthening its position as a leading global destination for historical and cultural tourism.
Tourism remains a key source of foreign currency for Egypt. The government has launched a national strategy to develop the sector and attract 30 million visitors by 2028.
In 2024, Egypt welcomed 15.7 million tourists, generating $14.1 billion in revenue, surpassing the previous record of 14.9 million tourists in 2023.

Australia, UK Sign 50-Year Defense Pact Under AUKUS Submarine Deal

Israa Farhan Australia and the United Kingdom have signed a landmark treaty to deepen defense cooperation for the next 50 years, as part of the AUKUS pact, which focuses on nuclear-powered submarines. Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles announced the bilateral treaty on Saturday following a meeting with his British counterpart, John Healey, in Geelong, Victoria. The new agreement, known as the Geelong Treaty, establishes long-term collaboration on the design, construction, operation, and sustainment of the next-generation SSN-AUKUS submarines. The treaty marks a major milestone in the AUKUS partnership, a trilateral security pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States formed in 2021. The goal of the agreement is to equip Canberra with advanced nuclear-powered attack submarines to counter growing Chinese influence in the Indo-Pacific region. According to the joint statement, the agreement is a formal commitment to 50 years of bilateral defense cooperation between the UK and Australia under the AUKUS framework, and builds on the strong foundations already laid through the trilateral pact. The UK Ministry of Defense stated earlier this week that the treaty will bolster allied submarine programs, with British exports under the deal expected to reach £20 billion (about $27.1 billion) over the next 25 years. AUKUS is the most ambitious defense project in Australia's history. The country has pledged to invest A\$368 billion over three decades into the program, which includes multi-billion-dollar contributions to US defense manufacturing bases. This month, Australia made its second payment of $800 million to the United States as part of the initiative, reaffirming its commitment to the deal. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results News "Tensions Escalate: Iran Probes Allegations of Indian Tech Collaboration with Israeli Intelligence" News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

London to Host Inaugural UK-Africa Business Summit to Boost Trade and Investment

London will host its first UK-Africa Business Summit in 2026, in a strategic push to enhance trade and investment ties with the African continent. The announcement was made by London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who said the summit would position the British capital as a global hub for African businesses and investors. Set to take place next year, the summit aims to bring together African entrepreneurs, investors, government representatives, stock exchanges, and business networks from across the continent. Organisers say the event will promote London as a springboard for African companies looking to expand internationally. The initiative is backed by data from London & Partners, the city's official promotional agency, which projects that trade between the UK and Africa could reach £62 billion by 2030. The report, based on data from the Office for National Statistics and the IMF, highlights the rapid growth of Africa's tech ecosystem—up 40% since 2019—and names Lagos as the world's top emerging tech hub. London Builds Momentum as Gateway for African Investment London has long positioned itself as a key destination for African capital. Since 2013, it has remained the leading European city for African foreign direct investment, attracting 72 African-led investment projects. It is also ranked second globally among cities outside Africa in attracting such investment. Mayor Khan recently returned from a high-profile trade mission to African capitals including Lagos, Accra, Johannesburg and Cape Town, where he met with local officials and private sector leaders. The visit, he said, was aimed at 'building stronger bridges' with the continent and exploring new avenues for collaboration. He was accompanied by a delegation of 27 London-based companies looking to grow in African markets. 'London is uniquely positioned to benefit from Africa's fast-growing economies—whether through tech startups or financial services,' Khan said. 'This summit is a key part of our international strategy and will help generate thousands of high-quality jobs in the coming years.' The summit is expected to mark a turning point in UK-Africa relations, at a time when both sides are seeking to diversify economic partnerships. Organisers say it will not only boost bilateral trade but also strengthen London's role as a platform for global investment into Africa's innovation economy.
