'Count his lucky stars': Youth struck by taxi while dashing across Yio Chu Kang Road, netizens react, Singapore News
A youth was seen dashing across a pedestrian crossing at a junction along Yio Chu Kang on Tuesday (July 29) evening, according to a post on Facebook group Singapore Road Vigilante (SGRV) the same day.
Based on the clip, the accident is believed to have occurred at the junction of Yio Chu Kang Road and Hougang Avenue 9.
In the video, the youth, carrying a bag, can be seen pausing for a moment at the side of the junction, before making a dash across the crossing while the pedestrian lights were still red.
However, as he reaches the left-most lane, a taxi appears.
Unable to stop in time, he makes contact with the right side of the cab, and is sent tumbling to the ground, landing on his side.
In the collision, the youth drops his phone to the ground, while a blue object — possibly the taxi's sideview mirror — also falls onto the road towards the middle of the junction.
Fortunately, the youth is able to get back on his feet, picking up his phone before walking over to the other side of the crossing.
He then signals to the taxi driver who had come to a stop down the road, with a gesture that netizens interpreted as indicating he was okay.
In the post on SGRV, the user who shared the video wrote: "[He] should count his lucky stars to be able to get back up and walk across the road."
Many commenters were upset by the teen's negligence towards safety, with one user asking why the youth couldn't "even wait for just a few seconds".
"Please, [even] if you don't treasure your life, [you shouldn't] cause others trouble," said the user, with another indicating that the youth was at fault.
"Obviously a run and hit incident, the pedestrian run and hit a car," they wrote.
Another noted how close the pedestrian might have been to death, stating: "Two steps faster and his parents can prepare funeral arrangements."
A comment also advised other pedestrians to practice caution when crossing roads: "Please be very careful and look out for traffic on the road, especially [if you rush or run] across the road."
The user explained that pedestrians could end up in the driver's blind spot and might not see them as they cross, causing accidents to occur.
"Safety first," he emphasised.
The police, when contacted by AsiaOne, said that a report has been lodged and investigations are ongoing.

Zoo Releases Statement, Says the Incident Took Place During a Behind-The-Scenes Tour In a statement obtained by BBC News, a zoo spokesperson said: "The tragic event occurred this morning, when during a routine activity to prepare the leopards for enrichment, which took place as part of a behind-the-scenes tour for visitors to the zoo, a leopard managed to escape from the leopard enclosure into the inner courtyard and attack one of the zoo employees who was preparing the activity. "At no point was there any physical danger to the visitors, who stood protected behind a glass window. With the help of the Israel Police, we are now conducting a comprehensive investigation to understand how the leopard managed to escape into the courtyard." Police are currently investigating whether a technical malfunction in the door to the enclosure allowed the animal to escape, as reported by local news outlets.

A man was held in Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) custody after allegedly vaping on a public bus. AsiaOne understands that he has since been released. A video shared by SGFollowsAll recently went viral showing the individual, dressed in a No. 4 military uniform, taking several puffs from a pink device, presumably an e-vapouriser. Mindef told AsiaOne in a statement today (Aug 2) that the man had been identified and put in SAF custody to assist with the investigation. The ministry said that SAF takes a "serious view" on the possession and use of vapes by service personnel and called it "both a matter of military discipline and an offence under national law". Offenders could be fined up to $1,000 or detained if the devices are found to be laced with controlled drugs. "Besides enforcement, the SAF also undertakes awareness and education efforts, and provides cessation counselling and support," the ministry added. "Service personnel are encouraged to speak to their commanders or medical officers if they require help." Vape seizures and disposal bins Between January 2024 and March 2025, over 17,900 people were caught for possession and use of e-vapourisers, with the Health Sciences Authority (HSA) seizing over $41 million worth of devices and components in 50 operations. Sixty people aged between 17 and 43 were also prosecuted for selling vapes. Starting July 25, the Ministry of Health (MOH), HSA and People's Association have placed vape disposal bins at 24 locations around the island for people to willingly curb their habit and safely dispose of their vaping paraphernalia. This comes after recent public concerns about vapes laced with etomidate, an anaesthetic agent that can cause seizures and psychosis which has been deemed a Controlled Substance under the Poisons Act. Health Minister Ong Ye Kung revealed that a third of vapes seized in Singapore were such 'Kpods'. The purchase, possession and use of e-vaporisers is illegal under the Tobacco (Control of Advertisements and Sale) Act and offenders can be fined up to $2,000. Possessing or supplying pods containing etomidate can result in jail of up to two years and/or a fine of up to $10,000 under the Poisons Act. As an interim measure, etomidate will be listed as a Class C drug and subsequently, persons caught using etomidate-laced vapes will face mandatory supervision and rehabilitation, and penalties under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
