Roundup: African experts spot potential of Juncao technology to boost livelihoods, sustainable agriculture

The Star4 days ago
KIGALI, July 24 (Xinhua) -- African agricultural experts are looking to harness Juncao technology, a Chinese innovation used in mushroom cultivation and livestock feed, to improve livelihoods and increase incomes in rural communities across the continent.
"Juncao technology offers far more than mushroom cultivation; it is a comprehensive innovation having crop, livestock production, environmental protection, livelihood nutrition and economic empowerment," said Telesphore Ndabamenye, director general of the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board.
He made the remark while attending the closing ceremony of a Juncao technology workshop held on Wednesday in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda.
Stressing the importance of Juncao technology in advancing agricultural transformation, Ndabamenye said the participation of trainees from diverse economies highlighted the broad applicability of the technology, particularly in addressing the socioeconomic challenges faced by smallholder farmers.
"Juncao technology is regarded in Rwanda as a vital contributor to the country's inclusive agriculture transformation. It supports our national vision of a professionalized and commercialized farming sector with active participation of both men and women as stated under Rwanda's vision 2050," he said.
He reaffirmed Rwanda's commitment to integrating Juncao technology into the country's strategy for food and nutrition security, environmental sustainability, and economic development, in full alignment with continental and global development agendas.
Since Juncao was first introduced to Rwanda in 2006, more than 35,000 local farmers have received training, and over 4,000 households, along with 50 companies and cooperatives, have been supported in engaging in Juncao-related activities.
The July 16-23 Juncao workshop was held at the China-Rwanda Agriculture Technology Demonstration Center, co-hosted by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the Rwandan Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources, and China's Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University.
As part of the training, participants visited several projects in Huye and Nyanza, gained hands-on experience, and deepened their understanding of Juncao technology's potential.
Innocent Shayamano, chief agriculture extension specialist and project coordinator from Zimbabwe's Ministry of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, said the workshop covered critical areas such as cultivation management of Juncao grass, including all its agronomic aspects.
"This course was relevant and significant for our country. We have seen the opportunities in embracing Juncao technology in terms of using Juncao grass as a substitute for livestock feed. This technology came to transform livelihoods and ensure that rural communities have enough income," he said.
Chinese Juncao expert Lin Hui said the participants' active engagement, thoughtful questions, and enthusiasm for applying the acquired knowledge were truly inspiring.
According to Lin, Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University of China has organized 388 training courses over the years, benefiting more than 16,000 people worldwide.
According to Li Jiahui, a representative of the Chinese Embassy in Rwanda, the technology has benefited over 100 countries since 2001, helping families lift themselves out of poverty and achieve prosperity.
"It has been proven that Juncao is not merely a technology but a grass of wealth and a grass of happiness. China takes great pride in sharing the technology as part of its commitment to South-South cooperation," Li added.

Dollar strengthens after US and EU agree to tariff deal

TOKYO/LONDON: The dollar rose against major peers on Monday after the United States and the European Union struck a framework trade pact, the latest in a flurry of deals to avert a global trade war, with investors also looking to this week's US and Japanese central bank meetings. Meeting in Scotland on Sunday, US President Donald Trump and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the deal provided for an import tariff of 15 per cent on EU goods, half the rate Trump had threatened from Aug 1. That follows last week's US agreement with Japan, while top US and Chinese economic officials will resume talks in Stockholm on Monday aiming to extend a truce by three months and keep sharply higher tariffs at bay. The euro was last at US$1.1693, down 0.4 per cent on the day, reversing an initial knee-jerk rise in Asia trade as investors' focus shifted to what an easing in global trade tensions meant for the dollar overall. "The mood music on US trade negotiations has been a little brighter following agreements with Japan and the EU," said Paul Mackel, global head of FX research at HSBC. "If more 'trade deals' are reached, this could help to reduce this source of policy uncertainty that has weighed against the dollar, at least for now. It could also see other factors such as relative yields becoming more influential." The dollar tumbled sharply earlier this year, particularly against the euro, as fears that dramatically higher tariffs on trade with most of its major partners would hurt the US economy caused investors to consider shifting out of US assets. Normally, the gap between yields on government bonds is a major factor for currency moves, but at present the euro is meaningfully higher than the gap between US and euro zone yields would imply. The euro was also last down slightly on the yen and sterling, having hit a one-year high on the Japanese currency, and a two-year high on sterling at the start of trade. The dollar was stronger elsewhere, up 0.15 per cent on the yen at 147.83, while the pound was down 0.13 per cent at US$1.3428. As concerns subside about the economic fallout from punishing tariffs, investor attention is shifting to corporate earnings and central bank meetings in the United States and Japan in the next few days. Both the Fed and the Bank of Japan are expected to hold rates steady at policy meetings this week, but traders will watch subsequent comments to gauge the timing of the next moves. Investors will also be watching to see Trump's reaction to the Fed's decision. The US President has been putting the Fed under heavy pressure to make significant rate cuts, and Trump appeared close to trying to fire Powell last week, but backed off with a nod to the market disruption that would likely follow. In cryptocurrencies, ethereum jumped 1.7 per cent and reached as high as US$3,940.25, the most since Dec 2024.

Myanmar to exhibit about 80 booths at 22nd China-Asean Expo in September

YANGON: Myanmar will exhibit about 80 booths at the 22nd China-Asean Expo, which will be held in Nanning, capital city of South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, from Sept 17 to Sept 21, state-owned daily The Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Sunday (July 27). Myanmar will participate in the expo as the Country of Honor and explore market access for Myanmar's agro-based SMEs' products into the Chinese market, the report said, adding that Myanmar's high-quality gemstones will also be displayed at the expo. The expo provides a platform to promote the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and the Asean-China Free Trade Agreement 3.0, it said.
