
Extreme heat's hidden health and economic toll – DW – 07/02/2025
In a country of 1.4 billion people — where at least half of the labor force works outdoors and only 10% come home to air conditioning — heat is more than a discomfort. It's a threat to the economy, livelihoods, and health.
"Heat waves have been increasing in India, spreading into new geographies and occurring earlier than expected," said Purnamita Dasgupta, Chair Professor of Environmental Economics at the University of Delhi. In such heat waves, temperatures can exceed 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit).
As temperatures rise, productivity falls. In 2023 alone, India lost 182 billion potential labor hours to extreme heat, according to medical journal, the Lancet. By 2030, it could lose the equivalent of 34 million full-time jobs.
Agriculture and construction will be the hardest hit, but the risks go beyond outdoor work. Poorly ventilated homes in densely populated areas trap heat, making it difficult for anyone to recover from the day's high temperatures.
Governments are beginning to respond. Some local authorities are issuing rules requiring employers to provide shade, breaks, and water. A few employers are acting independently to restore lost productivity.
"But the reality is that in most cases, productivity does fall," said Dasgupta. At 35 degrees Celsius, a worker "operating at moderate work intensity loses about 50% of his or her work capacity."
When scaled across an economy, that decline becomes a massive economic drag.
In 2021, heat caused income losses of roughly $159 billion across sectors like manufacturing, agriculture, services, and construction — 5.4% of India's GDP, according to advocacy group Climate Transparency. Similar losses are projected for countries like Thailand, Cambodia, and Pakistan by 2030.
For developing nations with ambitious growth targets — like India's goal of becoming fully developed by 2047 — these losses are particularly threatening.
And the problem is global. Heat-related economic loss is already costing the US about $100 billion a year. That figure is expected to reach $500 billion annually within 25 years, according to US think tank the Atlantic Council. In Europe, c have already shaved 0.3 to 0.5% off GDP. That may not seem like much, but if efforts to adapt to heat lag, losses could increase fivefold by 2060.
Heat doesn't just harm economies — it endangers lives. A single day of extreme heat across India leads to an estimated 3,400 excess deaths. A five-day heatwave pushes that number to about 30,000, according to researchers at the University of California, Berkeley.
Europe, the world's fastest-warming continent, is already experiencing deadly consequences. In summer 2022 alone, high temperatures led to 61,000 excess deaths — many among the elderly.
"We all think of heat exhaustion and heat stroke — see that person collapsing at the end of a long run on a hot day — and those are the obvious ones," said Dr. Sandy Robertson, an emergency physician in the UK. "But actually, the biggest part of the illness that we get is a couple of days after."
In India, Dasgupta said low-income workers she interviewed often don't even make it to a doctor for heat-related illness because they don't realize they need help. In the UK during heat waves, Robertson sees a spike in stroke victims, respiratory issues, heart attacks — even assault injuries, as violence tends to rise with temperatures. Prolonged heat exposure is also linked to kidney disease, poor mental health, and impaired cognitive function.
Health workers aren't immune to the heat, either. Many UK hospitals lack air conditioning. When temperatures inside wards exceed 26 C, it leads to overheating events that compromise patient safety, strain staff, and cause equipment failures — including fridges that store life-saving medicine.
"We've seen hospitals have their IT systems completely crash because they've overheated," said Robertson. "If you're also facing a busy department and the heat itself, and it's already a stressful day, the systems that you rely upon to look after your patients going down makes it even more difficult and kind of more chaotic. It turns into a perfect storm."
Robertson recommends simple protective steps when it gets hot — like checking if medications affect the body's heat tolerance, looking in on elderly neighbors, and cooling homes by ventilating at night and closing blinds by day.
Stifling, dangerous temperatures that cause emergency departments to fill are likelier in cities. Asphalt, concrete and other urban infrastructure absorb and release heat much more than natural spaces like woodland. In particularly dense cities with few green spaces, this urban heat island effect sends daytime temperatures soaring by up to 7 F (3.9 C) compared to outlying areas.
One way to combat heat's deadly effects is air conditioning, which can be essential, particularly for vulnerable populations, like the elderly. But if AC runs on electricity from fossil fuels, it contributes to the greenhouse gas emissions heating the planet and worsening the heat waves in the first place. AC also worsens the heat island effect, raising nighttime outdoor temperatures by about 1 C.
Instead, smart design for heat that incorporates lots of green space and other simple hacks are important on the city level, said Nick Rajkovich, an architect and associate professor at the University of Buffalo.
In Seville, Spain, narrow streets create shade and keep temperatures down. Los Angeles has painted its streets white to reflect the heat. In Xiamen, China, green roofs have lowered city temperatures by nearly 1 C.
"We used to plant trees along the streets because it kept horses cool as they pulled wagons," noted Rajkovich.
Another thing that can help is rethinking building design. Like with city design, looking to the past.
"Before the advent of air conditioning in particular, we did rely a lot more on natural ventilation for buildings," said Rajkovich.
In the arid southwestern US, Pueblo Indians pioneered a style of architecture with thick walls made of adobe. The mix of mud or clay, sand, and straw absorbs heat by day and releases it at night. The buildings' flat roofs also collect rainwater. In Burkina Faso, double roofs separated by an air cavity help heat escape and provide shade to entire buildings.
"These are all strategies that we can use to be a lot smarter about how we cool buildings," said Rajkovich.

New Wildfire Near Athens, Crete Blaze 'Retreating': Firefighters
A wildfire on the island of Crete that forced the evacuation of 5,000 tourists and locals is "retreating", Greek firefighters told AFP on Friday, but a new blaze fanned by strong winds is spreading east of the capital, Athens. Hot dry weather in Greece -- not unusual for this time of year -- has heightened the risk of summer wildfires, and scientists say human-driven climate change is making them more frequent and more intense. The new wildfire broke out at Koropi, a town some 30 kilometres (20 miles) east of Athens, where residents received text messages from civil protection units urging them to evacuate the vicinity. That fire "has reached the courtyards of the houses", Koropi mayor Dimitris Kiousis told public television channel ERT. "The fire is ongoing. All residents (in threatened areas) have been evacuated," Thodoris Grivas, deputy mayor of Koropi, told ERT. "We do not yet know the extent of the disaster," Grivas added. A fire department official later told AFP that the situation appeared "improved". "There remain some scattered clusters," he added. In all, 120 firefighters were at the scene, with 30 engines, eight planes and the same number of helicopters, fire service spokesman Vassilis Vathrakoyannis told reporters. A coastguard vessel was patrolling nearby. Concerns remain for the coming days, particularly Saturday. when temperatures are due to rise, with the risk of fire still high. Temperatures are forecast to reach up to 43 degrees Celsius (109 Fahrenheit) in some areas of the country, according to the EMY weather agency. Greece had until now been generally spared the heatwave roasting parts of Europe, particularly Spain, Portugal and France over recent days. Early on Friday afternoon, at least two water bombers and two helicopters were battling flames fanned by strong winds blowing across Attica, the Athens region, and the capital itself. The fire was destroying olive trees and brushwood, ERT images showed. Firefighters earlier managed to bring under control a separate fire which had on Thursday threatened the port of Rafina, around 20 kilometres northeast of Koropi, after some 300 local people were evacuated from their homes. Fire crews remained on alert, as the Rafina wildfire was not far from Athens International Airport and winds still posed a threat. The blaze destroyed a several houses and vehicles, local mayor Dimitris Markou told ERT. It also disrupted ferries to and from tourist islands in the western Aegean, including Mykonos. On the island of Crete, around 230 firefighters, 48 fire engines and six helicopters remained at the scene near the resort town of Ierapetra, even though the blaze was receding. Some 3,000 visitors had been forced to leave their hotels and guest houses on Wednesday evening and 2,000 local residents were also evacuated, authorities said. "The fire is retreating," Vathrakoyannis told AFP. "There are still fears of flare-ups but there is no longer a major front," he added. Scattered hot spots still remained and firefighters were dealing with several smoke-filled areas from which flare-ups had restarted, the fire department told the ANA press agency. Weakening winds in the hard-to-reach area had improved the situation, firefighters said, although a fire brigade spokesperson had warned overnight of some "difficult" days ahead. Last month, fires on Greece's fifth-biggest island Chios, in the northern Aegean, destroyed 4,700 hectares (11,600 acres) of land, according to the WWF and the National Observatory of Athens research institute. The most destructive year for wildfires was 2023, when nearly 175,000 hectares were lost and there were 20 deaths. Germany udpates: 1,000 firefighters tackle wildfires in east – DW – 07/04/2025
Two major wildfires have been burning in the eastern German states of Saxony and Thuringia. Meanwhile, several people were injured when a bus overturned in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Follow DW for more. Following a heat wave that brought temperatures up to 40 degrees Celcius (104 Fahrenheit) across parts of Germany, firefighters have been deployed to tackle raging fires. A total of 1,000 emergency personnel have been deployed to Gohrischheide in Saxony and the Saalfelder Höhe in Thuringia, both in eastern Germany. Firefighters on the scene estimated the extent of the affected area to reach 1,000 hectares (2,470 acres). A police spokesperson said 20 people were injured when a bus overturned on the A19 motorway in the northeastern German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. One passenger was critically injured after being trapped for two hours before being freed. The cause of the accident is still unclear. The low-cost bus had 53 passengers and two drivers on board, and was travelling from Copenhagen to Vienna. Police said the accident took place at around 2:40 a.m. local time (0040 GMT) near the Röbel junction heading toward Berlin. The part of the motorway where it happened remains closed. The bus was owned by the Flixbus company which was involved in a deadly crash in Germany in January. Record Cold Grips Argentina, Chile And Uruguay
A polar air mass has brought record low temperatures to Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, causing at least 15 deaths and forcing governments to restrict gas supplies and activate emergency shelters. The three South American countries have all recorded sharply below-zero temperatures as the polar air originated from Antarctica and swept across the region. In Argentina, at least nine homeless people have died from the cold this winter, according to NGO Proyecto 7. The capital Buenos Aires recorded its lowest temperature since 1991 at -1.9 degrees Celcius (28.6 Fahrenheit) on Wednesday, while the coastal city of Miramar saw snow for the first time in 34 years. Further south, the town of Maquinchao recorded -18C on Tuesday. Electricity demand caused cuts across Buenos Aires, leaving thousands without power for over 24 hours in some areas. The government suspended gas supplies to industries and petrol stations Wednesday to ensure household supplies, and removed price controls on gas cylinders Thursday. Uruguay declared a nationwide "red alert" after six people died, allowing President Yamandu Orsi's government to forcibly move homeless people to shelters. Montevideo recorded its lowest maximum temperature since 1967 at 5.8C on June 30, according to meteorologist Mario Bidegain. Chile also activated homeless shelter plans during the coldest days. The city of Chillan, 400 kilometers (250 miles) south of Santiago, hit -9.3C, according to the Chilean Meteorological Directorate. "What happened this week in Chile and the Southern Cone in general is a cold wave caused by an escape of a polar air mass from Antarctica," climatologist Raul Cordero from the University of Santiago told AFP. Snow even fell in parts of the Atacama Desert, the world's driest, for the first time in a decade. "It is not so common for these cold air masses to extend so far north, so we cannot rule out that this is also caused by climate change," meteorologist Arnaldo Zuniga told AFP. The region expects relief in the coming days, with Buenos Aires reaching 12C on Thursday, Montevideo 14C and Santiago 24.7C. "I was quite surprised by the change from cold to hot -- the change was very drastic," student Dafne Naranjo, 18, said in Santiago. Climatologist Cordero said heatwaves have become more frequent than cold spells in recent years. "The frequency of heatwaves has tripled, whether in summer or winter, not only in the Southern Cone but throughout the world," he said.
