Could Hong Kong Football Festival rival city's rugby sevens as its crown jewel?

As clubs and fans departed over the weekend following the Hong Kong Football Festival, the event's success raised the possibility of the city enjoying a repeat influx of visitors. Advertisement Organisers touted the festival's wider reach, with 'an estimated 35 per cent coming from overseas to take in the football – and the sights'. Attendances reflected the appetite for Hong Kong hosting multiple English Premier League sides, eight years since it had last done so, with 160,000 watching two matches and four training sessions featuring Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur, plus Italian giants AC Milan. Ex-Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia was at his old club's game, after last year attending the Cathay/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens. 'This could be similar, with Hong Kong people having the experience of big football matches every year,' he said. 'Instead of the costumes, you go wearing the shirt of your favourite team, but it still feels like a big party.' Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard leads his team in thanking the Kai Tak Stadium crowd. Photo: Sam Tsang Players, managers and executives were united in their desire to do it again, while Rachael Carroll, managing director of the event's promoter TEG Sport, said Hong Kong's 'passionate fans, world-class stadium and very supportive government' made repeating the formula attractive.

Son Heung-min to quit Spurs, calls it ‘most difficult' decision of his career

After 10 years with Tottenham Hotspur, captain Son Heung-min announced on Saturday that he plans to leave the English Premier League club. At a media conference in Seoul, Son, appearing at times to be holding back tears, said his decision to leave the Spurs was 'the most difficult' of his career and said the club was supporting him as he looks to move on to another team. Spurs will face Newcastle United in a pre-season friendly on Sunday in Seoul in what could be the final match of Son's time at Spurs. He played 15 minutes in his side's 1-0 loss to Arsenal in Hong Kong on Thursday, with his appearance drawing one of the biggest cheers of the evening at Kai Tak Stadium. 'Before we start the press conference, I just want to share the information that I have decided to leave the club this summer,' Son said. 'Respectfully, this club is helping me to my decisions. So I just wanted to share this information before we start the conference. 'I came to North London as a kid, 23 years old, very young age, a young boy came to London who even didn't speak English and leaving this club as a grown man is a very, very proud moment.' Tottenham captain Son Heung-min raises the Europa League trophy after his side beat Manchester United in Bilbao. Photo: AFP He continued his tribute by thanking Tottenham fans.
