Manolo Marquez and AIFF part ways mutually; Federation to put out advertisement for head coach role

The Manolo Marquez chapter in Indian national team football ended on a rather anticlimactic note as the All India Football Federation (AIFF) mutually agreed to part ways with the Spaniard on Wednesday.
The decision was one of the many taken at the AIFF Executive Committee Meeting today.
'Mr. Marquez did not resign. After discussions with the AIFF, it was mutually agreed that he will not continue as India (men) coach. Accordingly, he was let go,' M. Satyanarayanan, the acting general secretary of the AIFF, told Sportstar.
Marquez, who guided Hyderabad FC to the Indian Super League (ISL) title in 2022 and won the Super Cup with FC Goa this year, had succeeded Igor Stimac as India coach a year ago.

But he has failed to replicate his club success at the international level. India did not win any competitive match under the Spaniard, despite Sunil Chhetri, India's record goalscorer, coming out of retirement earlier this year.
His last match was a 0-1 loss to Hong Kong, India's first competitive defeat to the opponent in 32 years.
Marquez was in two minds after the draw with Bangladesh in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers in March and had eventually made up his mind to move on.
However, there were discussions between the AIFF and the coach, with the latter pushing for Marquez to continue. That ultimately hinged his decision on the third round qualifier against Hong Kong on June 10, where the loss acted as his breaking point.
The Blue Tigers played eight matches under him, including friendlies, losing thrice and winning just once, a 3-0 victory over the Maldives.

India, which was ranked 99th in the FIFA rankings in July 2023, has now dropped to 127th, with no wins in competitive football since November 2023.
The Federation will now put up an advertisement for the vacant position, with Jamshedpur FC head coach Khalid Jamil one of the names expected to be on the shortlist as a replacement.
Khalid, like Marquez, has been a coach in the Indian Super League (ISL) and is the only Indian manager in the league.
He has taken two ISL sides, Jamshedpur FC and NorthEast United FC, to the ISL Cup semifinals, while the former was the Super Cup runner-up last season.
'Jamshedpur FC has not officially received an offer from AIFF for Khalid, and he has a contract with the club till 2026. If at all such an offer comes, the club will decide then,' a source told Sportstar.

Encarnacion-Strand hits his 1st career grand slam to power Reds' rally to beat Red Sox 8-4

Jul 03, 2025 07:42 AM IST BOSTON — Christian Encarnacion-Strand hit his first career grand slam during a five-run seventh inning and the Cincinnati Reds rallied to beat the Boston Red Sox 8-4 on Wednesday night. Encarnacion-Strand hits his 1st career grand slam to power Reds' rally to beat Red Sox 8-4 Elly De La Cruz, TJ Friedl and Santiago Espinal added RBIs for the Reds. Nick Martinez pitched 6 2/3 innings, yielding four runs off nine hits to help Cincinnati avoid being swept in the three-game interleague series. Wilyer Abreu hit a two-run home run for the Red Sox. Romy Gonzalez drove in two runs, including an RBI double in the seventh to pull Boston within 5-4. Brennan Bernardino opened for Boston, pitching 1 1/3 innings before handing off to Jorge Alcala and then Chris Murphy. That trio held Cincinnati to three hits and no runs over 5 2/3 innings before Greg Weissert took over. Weissert got the final out of the sixth. But things fell apart in the seventh when Stephenson led off with a single, followed by Rece Hinds reaching on a fielder's choice and Gavin Lux walking to load the bases for Encarnacion-Strand. Weissert was pulled after surrendering five runs off four hits. Earlier Wednesday, Abreu hit a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth to help Boston earn a 5-3 win in the completion of a game suspended by rain on Tuesday. Abreu jumped on Martinez's changeup in the sixth, driving it over the right-field wall and into the Reds' bullpen beyond the reach of Hinds. It came after Hinds had made a catch against the same wall in the fifth, robbing Jarren Duran of an extra-base hit. Encarnacion-Strand's grand slam was Cincinnati's sixth of the season. LHP Andrew Abbott will start for Cincinnati when it opens its three-game series at Philadelphia on Friday. RHP Lucas Giolito is scheduled to start for Boston at Washington. WATCH: Nitish Reddy deceived by Chris Woakes' brilliance, bowled after a shocking leave

Nitish Kumar Reddy. New Delhi: Recalled to the Indian Test team, Nitish Kumar Reddy could manage to get only one run off the six deliveries in the Second Test on July 2 (Wednesday) at Edgbaston, Birmingham. But it was not his bad score that attracted notice, it was the humorous manner in which his stumps were broken, following a misjudged leave. The all-rounder made his way into the Indian playing XI as a replacement of Shardul Thakur who was left out after he put up a subpar performance in the first match. India's MCG hero batting at No.6 was out of rhythm and failed to gel since he found it hard to take on, facing probing deliveries of Chris Woakes. You can't leave those 😅 Chris Woakes clean bowls Nitish Kumar Reddy for 1️⃣ 🇮🇳 2️⃣1️⃣1️⃣-5️⃣ — England Cricket (@englandcricket) July 2, 2025 English all-rounder got the ball hopping through the air and skimming back brutally into the defence of the right-hander. Unluckily, however, to Reddy, who chose to leave the moving delivery, there remained to him only to hear the rattle of the stumps as he left away with only one run off six balls upon his Test re-entry. India had a horror beginning in the Test with KL Rahul being dismissed early scoring only 2 off 26 balls. However, Karun Nair along with Yashasvi Jaiswal kept the innings consistent by scoring valuable 31 off 50 balls with five fours. And when Nitish Kumar Reddy got his chance, he failed make any impact with his bat.
