The Cross Country badge, first used on the V70 back in 1997, returns here with an off-road-inspired makeover. Volvo has given the EX30 a raised ride height (19mm higher than the standard EX30), chunkier body cladding, and 19-inch five-spoke wheels finished in Matte Graphite with black aero inserts.
Other design tweaks help the Cross Country stand out from the standard EX30. The front shield and boot lid wear a darker finish, and model-specific artwork on the front end takes inspiration from Sweden's Kebnekaise mountain range. Skid plates and wheel arch extensions complete the rugged aesthetic. South African buyers will get the Cross Country in the Ultra Twin Performance trim only. That means a fully loaded cabin with a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable front seats, and a long list of safety and driver assistance features over 15 in total, including Pilot Assist and a 360-degree camera. Volvo will also offer accessories like mudflaps, a roof basket, and a load carrier for added versatility.

Under the skin, the EX30 Cross Country uses a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup delivering 315kW and 543N.m of torque, enabling a 0-100km/h sprint in just 3.7 seconds. The 69kWh battery pack offers a claimed WLTP range of 427km. Fast-charging capability means a 10 to 80% top-up takes just 26 minutes with a suitable DC fast charger. 'The EX30 Cross Country builds on everything people love about the EX30, adding rugged capability and distinctive design details,' said Felipe Yagi, Volvo Car South Africa's head of marketing and communications. 'It's a refined, all-electric SUV that feels equally at home on gravel roads or in the city, offering South Africans a practical way to go further with confidence.'
The arrival of the EX30 Cross Country highlights Volvo's ongoing shift to electrification, with the brand aiming for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to make up nearly all global sales by 2030. Local pricing and final specifications will be revealed closer to launch.

Will the 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado adopt Hilux's hybrid engine in SA?

Already available in Australia and scheduled to be introduced to the European market in 2025, will the 48 V mild-hybrid version of Toyota's tried-and-tested 2.8-litre turbo diesel make its way to the Land Cruiser Prado lineup in South Africa? Toyota has announced the Land Cruiser Prado is 'powering into a new era', with the '250' series of the Japanese automaker's rugged go-anywhere SUV adopting the 2.8-litre mild-hybrid engine in the European market. However, perhaps of even more significance, is this unit is already available in Australia, a market that largely mirrors ours. So, this made Car Magazine wonder: Will Toyota introduce this powertrain to the local Land Cruiser Prado lineup? As a reminder, the new-generation Land Cruiser Prado, which Car Mag reviewed at the local launch in July 2024 and evaluated in a road test in the October 2024 issue of the magazine, was unveiled in 2023 with five (market-dependent) engine options: 207kW/430Nm 2.4-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol 243kW/630Nm 2.4-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol-hybrid 120kW/246Nm 2.7-litre, four-cylinder petrol 150kW/500Nm 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbo diesel 150kW/500Nm 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbo diesel 48 V mild-hybrid More compact than the manufacturer's full hybrid system, the mild-hybrid setup comprises a larger, 48V, 4.3Ah lithium-ion battery pack and permanent magnet synchronous electric motor-generator, which operates with a two-arm belt tensioner that's been specifically designed for diesel powertrains. Noteworthy, the fitment of this arrangement doesn't compromise the Land Cruiser Prado's off-road capability. In addition, by way of the Hilux and Fortuner's unit, it offers a boost of 12kW/65Nm, while improving fuel consumption. Now, as mentioned, in addition to being available with Toyota's best-selling bakkie and Fortuner in South Africa, considering the 48V mild-hybrid has been earmarked for European introduction in 2025 and, significantly, employed across the board in Australia, it doesn't seem unlikely that this powertrain could be introduced South Africa. However, if it does, indeed, make its way to the local Land Cruiser Prado lineup, we expect it will probably only be towards the end of 2025, or in 2026. Volvo adds extended maintenance plan to XC60 range in SA

Volvo Car South Africa (VCSA) has introduced a limited-time maintenance plan for its XC60, aimed at offering long-term peace of mind and reducing ownership costs. For a limited period, new XC60 models, including the mild-hybrid B5 and Recharge T8 plug-in hybrid, will be covered by a seven-year/140,000km maintenance plan (whichever comes first). This extends the three-year/60,000km plan and applies across all trim levels. The offer is valid until the end of September 2025, while stocks last. 'Extending the maintenance plan of the XC60 reflects VCSA's focus on long-term vehicle care and customer value,' said VCSA MD Grant Locke. 'It forms part of our broader commitment to delivering an ownership experience that matches the quality of our vehicles and the needs of today's drivers.' The maintenance plan covers scheduled services, including labour, parts and software updates, in line with Volvo's recommended service schedule, giving owners greater confidence and predictability in running costs.
