I'm in the first year of a UG course in economics. In Class 11 and 12, I had taken Science. What are my career options? Airin
Dear Airin,
Traditional career paths include banking, insurance, market research analysis, business journalism and international trade. You could also explore Data Science and Analytics or Quantitative Finance. Actuary Sciences is another good option. You can also explore research and academia or public policy and roles in the government.
I am in the fourth semester of B.A. Hons. I wanted to do a B.A. LL.B. but didn't get admission into the university I wanted. I am also preparing for the UPSC CSE. I am wondering if I should do a B.A. LL.B. after graduating or attempt the UPSC. Kangna
Dear Kangna,
Are you confident about attempting the UPSC exam based on your preparation? How strong is your desire to study law? What are your immediate career goals? Based on your answers, make an informed decision about whether to pursue B.A. LL.B. after attempting the UPSC (regardless of the outcome) or to focus solely on career paths related to your B.A. Hons. and/or the UPSC.
My recommendation would be to complete your B.A. Hons. and attempt the UPSC CSE without the added burden of a law degree. Completing your current degree will likely be faster than starting a new five-year law programme. A Bachelor's in any discipline makes you eligible for the UPSC CSE. There will be an added advantage of some overlap of the UPSC syllabus with your B.A. Hons. programme.
However, if you pursue a B.A. LL.B., it will open up various career options in the legal field (litigation, corporate law, legal advising). This may cause a delay in your attempts at the UPSC CSE and will require a significant investment of time.
Switching to B.A. LL.B. now means loss of the time and effort already invested in the B.A. Hons. degree. The admission process for law programmes is also highly competitive. Switching mid-way could disrupt any momentum that you have built in your UPSC preparation.
I have completed a PG in Sociology and am preparing for the UPSC. In UG, my subjects were History, Sociology and Political Science. I can't do a Ph.D. because of the time commitment. What else can I do? I don't want to be idle while preparing for the UPSC. Harsh

Explore platforms like Coursera, edX, and NPTEL for courses related to public administration, economics, international relations, current affairs, or any other area relevant to the UPSC syllabus or your interests. Short-term certifications can add value to your profile. Read widely on diverse topics to broaden your understanding of the world. Unemployed SSC teachers launch protest march 'Nabanno Abhiyan' towards Bengal Secretariat
Howrah (West Bengal) [India], July 14 (ANI): Senior Secondary Commission (SSC) teachers who lost their jobs after the Calcutta High Court decisison in 2024, launched a protest march 'Nabanno Abhiyan' in Howrah towards the Bengal Secretariat under the banner of 'Jogya Shikshak Shikshika Adhikar Mancha'. They lost their jobs following a Supreme Court judgment which held that the whole appointment process was tainted. The teachers who lost their jobs staged several protest against the Mamata Banerjee's government demanding justice. Calcutta High Court in April, 2024 declared all appointments null and void in the selection of candidates in West Bengal government-sponsored and aided secondary and higher secondary schools through a 2016 recruitment process. The court further ordered that those who were recruited illegally will have to return their salary. All appointments by the SSC in the categories of teachers of classes 9, 10, 11 and 12 and group-C and D staffers through the State Level Selection Test-2016 (SLST) where irregularities were found have also been declared null and void. A bench of Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar found that the West Bengal SSC's selection process was based on large-scale manipulations and fraud. 'In our opinion, this is a case wherein the entire selection process has been vitiated and tainted beyond resolution. Manipulations and frauds on a large scale, coupled with the attempted cover-up, have dented the selection process beyond repair and partial redemption. The credibility and legitimacy of the selection are denuded,' the apex court bench stated in its judgement. The apex court found no reason to interfere with the High Court's direction that the services of 'tainted' candidates must be terminated and that they should be required to refund any salaries/payments received. 'Since their appointments were the result of fraud, this amounts to cheating. Therefore, we see no justification to alter this direction', the bench added. (ANI)

Security cordon around Bengal state secretariat as 'eligible teachers' plan protest march
Tight security arrangements have been made around West Bengal state secretariat 'Nabanna' in Howrah on Monday (July 14, 2025) as 'eligible teachers', whose jobs were annulled following a Supreme Court order, planned a protest march demanding their reinstatement, a senior police officer said. Although the route march of the 'Joggya Sikkhak Sikkhika Adhikar Mancha' (Deserving Teachers' Rights Forum) has not been finalised yet, Howrah City Police deployed senior officers at crucial junctions to maintain law and order, with a specific focus on major entry points to Nabanna. 'We are focused on preventing any major disruption to daily life and keeping the situation under control. To stop any such attempt, iron barricades have been placed at four strategic locations in Howrah to halt the protesters from advancing toward the state secretariat,' the officer said. 'Towering metal barriers have been erected at Bangabashi Crossing on GT Road, Ramkrishnapur Ghat Gate on Foreshore Road, Kazipara Crossing, and Satragachi Crossing,' he said. 'There are prohibitory orders around Nabanna and assembly of people is not permitted in the area. Additional security measures have been taken in the wake of the planned protest march,' he said. Around 2,000 police personnel, drawn from multiple commissionerates, have been deployed across Howrah. Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel have also been stationed at strategic locations, while water cannons are on standby to disperse any attempt to break through police barricades. The forum demanded that the state publish lists of 'untainted certified teachers' besides OMR sheets, and restore the jobs of eligible teachers. Chinmoy Mondal, spokesperson of the forum, said that they were determined to hold the protest march despite the threat of police action. 'This is our democratic right. We want the state government to fulfil our demands,' he said. The teachers, who are scheduled to gather at Howrah station, have been staging protests for the past 68 days near Central Park in Salt Lake after earlier demonstrations at Bikash Bhavan, the headquarters of the state education department. The Supreme Court on April 3 upheld a 2024 Calcutta High Court judgment annulling the recruitment of 25,753 teaching and non-teaching staffers appointed through a recruitment drive by SSC in 2016, terming the entire selection process 'vitiated and tainted'. Those who were rendered jobless claimed that the reason behind their plight was the inability of the state School Service Commission (SSC) to differentiate between candidates who secured employment through fraudulent means and those who did not. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had earlier arrested former West Bengal education minister Partha Chatterjee and some other officials, who held positions in the state SSC when the irregularities in the recruitment process took place.
