Volkswagen welcomes 540 young trainees through YES programme
The YES programme was initiated by the government in 2019 to alleviate youth unemployment.
The company said 296 trainees will work for VWGA:
232 at will be stationed at Kariega in Gqeberha, where the company assembles the VW Polo and Polo Vivo models;
62 are headed to its Gauteng headquarters in Sandton; and
two will be absorbed at the company's satellite parts warehouse in the Western Cape.
Another 244 trainees will be deployed with external partners in October.
This intake brings the total of YES trainees who have benefited from VWGA's involvement in the programme to 3,650.
'We know today's youth will be tomorrow's leaders, but we also believe in playing an active role in developing those leaders and innovators,' said Nonkqubela Maliza, VWGA's corporate and government affairs director.
'Through our participation in the YES programme, we want to offer youth the space to become economically active and gain invaluable skills on which they can build successful and fulfilling careers.'
Since its inception, VWGA has supported the initiative by providing employment opportunities and work experience for youth at its sites, in addition to opportunities in the dealer network and SME partners.

According to VW media and PR manager Tebogo Losaba the company does not respond to product recall queries and could not comment on the Ford Ranger matter. Earlier this year the automaker issued recall notices for its Golf 8 GTI and R and the current Polo sedan over concerns relating to the functioning of safety belts. This affected 159 Golf units and 253 Polo sedan units. This year it also recalled 142 Polo units and eight Taigo models for a faulty component in the gas generator of the passenger airbag module. The notices affecting the Golf, Polo sedan, Polo hatchback and Taigo were shared by the National Consumer Commission. Separately, the manufacturer has an ongoing campaign in effect to address faulty Takata airbag modules, an issue that has troubled automakers who used the beleaguered supplier. Owners are able to see if their vehicles are affected through a VIN checker on the VW local website. We approached three VW franchise dealerships in the Johannesburg area to enquire about the prospect of the 3.0 V6 diesel engine's camshaft sprocket failure and whether there were campaigns in effect for the Amarok.

The cars were made available for sale from 11 August 2022. Volkswagen of South Africa has informed the National Consumer Commission (NCC) of a recall of 253 Polo Sedans. This is an addition to the recall of 18 Polo Sedans that was announced last week. NCC spokesperson Phetho Ntaba said the cars were made available for sale from 11 August 2022 to date. 'The recall is due to incorrectly fitted seat belts on the driver and passenger sides.' The Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 protects consumers from hazards and ensures their well-being and safety by governing product recalls. The NCC can order a recall if a product is deemed unsafe or poses a potential risk to the public. The first recall was made on 17 July 2025, in which VW stated that the affected vehicles were the Polo sedans. The issue is caused by a mix-up of belt webbing. Seat belts in Polo Sedans 'The NCC received another recall affecting an additional 253 vehicles,' she added. According to VW, the recall is due to a fault in the rear right seat belt; both rear seat belts (left and right) require inspection. Due to the manufacturing issue, the seat belts' restraint function may be severely limited in the event of an accident. 'This could lead to serious or fatal injuries for the driver.'
