A Thai auto industry expert has highlighted China's world-class expertise in EV technology, particularly in battery systems and industrial-scale manufacturing, which is complemented by Thailand's geographic advantages, skilled labor, and robust government support.
BANGKOK, July 20 (Xinhua) -- The growing presence of Chinese automakers in Thailand has marked a crucial milestone in collaborative efforts toward green mobility and deepening of ties with China, a Thai auto industry expert has said.
Suroj Sangsnit, president of the Electric Vehicle Association of Thailand (EVAT), described the partnership as a testament to the systematic development of electric vehicle ecosystem and a strategic step toward advancing shared environmental goals.
In a recent interview with Xinhua, Suroj highlighted China's world-class expertise in EV technology, particularly in battery systems and industrial-scale manufacturing, which is complemented by Thailand's geographic advantages, skilled labor, and robust government support.
This synergy, he said, enables both countries to collaborate across the entire EV value chain, from vehicle production and infrastructure development to battery recycling.
The arrival of Chinese manufacturers, offering "advanced technology, accessible prices, and swift product deployment," has made EVs more attainable for the average Thai consumer, fostering wider adoption, he said.
That has also spurred investment in infrastructure such as charging stations, battery repair services, EV maintenance education, and parts manufacturing, he noted.
In the first half of 2025, new registrations of pure electric passenger vehicles in Thailand increased nearly 35 percent over the same period last year, reaching 55,708 units, of which Chinese brands accounted for almost 90 percent, official data showed.
Over the past few years, several Chinese automakers have established production facilities in Thailand, significantly bolstering the Southeast Asian country's ambition to become a regional electric mobility hub.
Suroj underscored the EVAT's role in fostering regional integration within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations by creating a network with its counterparts. He noted that the goal is to develop common standards and enable cross-border infrastructure, such as charging roaming.
Suroj emphasized that EV cooperation will be a cornerstone of future cooperation. He envisioned collaborative efforts in technologies, including solid-state batteries, intelligent EV platforms, and battery recycling solutions, with the establishment of joint research and development centers in Thailand.

China meeting global demand for cooling products amid heat waves

China's 'summer economy' is gaining momentum, with domestic manufacturers racing to meet soaring overseas demand for cooling solutions. — China Daily BEIJING: Inside the bustling workshop of Dongguan JHS Electrical Co Ltd, a manufacturer of mobile air conditioners and dehumidifiers in Dongguan, South China's Guangdong province, the hum of machines filled the air as workers move swiftly through the assembly line, fastening, inspecting and packaging in early July. A total of 458 portable air conditioners rolled off the production line, neatly boxed and ready for export to Mexico. As sweltering heat waves grip many regions around the world, China's 'summer economy' is gaining momentum, with domestic manufacturers racing to meet soaring overseas demand for cooling solutions. With operations spanning more than 40 countries and regions, the Chinese company has established itself as a major player in the global cooling equipment market. 'Our portable air conditioners are independently developed, compact in size, energy-efficient and offer strong cooling performance,' said Gao Yueping, the company's chairman. 'Compared with traditional wall-mounted units, they are more cost-effective to install and far more portable.' Overseas demand has exceeded the company's expectations this year. By the end of April, its orders for portable air conditioners had surged 10% year-on-year, data from Huangpu Customs showed. With a new 80,000 sq m factory becoming fully operational earlier this year, Dongguan JHS Electrical expects total orders in 2025 to exceed 2.3 million units, generating an estimated output value of 1.6 billion yuan. To cope with unilateral trade policies in the United States, Gao said his company has expanded into new markets such as South-East Asia, where demand, particularly in less urbanised areas, is rising steadily. While production ramps up in southern China, activity in the eastern part of the country is just as intense. Roughly 1,400km from Dongguan, an air conditioner factory owned by Trane Air Conditioning Systems (China) Co Ltd in Taicang, East China's Jiangsu province, is also working at full capacity to ship products overseas as global demand for air conditioning systems continues to grow. — China Daily/ANN

US bank employee barred from leaving China in criminal case

BEIJING: China has confirmed an exit ban on a US bank employee involved in an ongoing criminal investigation. Wells Fargo managing director Chenyue Mao, a Shanghai-born executive based in Atlanta, is restricted from leaving the country while authorities probe the case. Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun stated Mao is 'involved in a criminal case currently being investigated by the Chinese authorities.' He added, 'The Chinese law enforcement agencies have imposed exit restrictions in accordance with the law.' No further details about the alleged offences were disclosed. Wells Fargo acknowledged the situation, saying it is 'closely tracking this situation and working through the appropriate channels so our employee can return to the United States as soon as possible.' Reports indicate the bank has now restricted employee travel to China following the incident. Guo emphasised that Mao 'cannot leave the country while the case is ongoing, and has an obligation to cooperate with the work of investigators.' He called it an 'individual case' and reiterated China's openness to foreign business, stating, 'No matter whether you are Chinese or not, you must follow Chinese laws while in China.' The case adds to growing concerns among multinational firms about China's business climate. Industry groups cite unclear data laws and prolonged detentions as key challenges. Tensions between Beijing and Western nations, particularly the US, have intensified in recent years. Separately, The Washington Post reported a US Commerce Department employee was also barred from leaving China after failing to disclose his government role on a visa application. The Chinese American man, from the Patent and Trademark Office, had visited family months earlier. Guo said he was unaware of the case. Recent incidents include a Japanese Astellas Pharma executive sentenced for espionage and AstraZeneca's China head detained over alleged illegal data practices. In 2023, a Kroll executive faced similar travel restrictions, highlighting risks for foreign professionals in China. - AFP

Glove sector plunges down to 59% amid weak demand, tariff fears

Glove makers under Hong Leong Investment Bank (HLIB)'s coverage have declined significantly in the first half of 2025 (1H2025), with share prices down between -47% to -59%. The sector was first weighed down by growing investor risk aversion towards export-oriented sectors in early-2025 in view of the potential unfavourable reciprocal tariffs to be imposed on Malaysia imports by US President Trump post his inauguration. Sentiment was further dampened by earnings disappointments from Hartalega and Kossan in Feb 2025, which missed both our and consensus estimates. This was accompanied by a weak forward guidance from Hartalega, which flagged the possibility of returning to losses in upcoming quarters and raised concerns over Chinese peers' expansion into Southeast Asia (SEA). 'Based on our checks, sales orders for generic medical examination rubber gloves remain subdued since Feb 2025, with the US replenishment cycle guidance continuing to be pushed back,' said HLIB. According to the glove makers, the softness was primarily attributed to US distributors still sitting on the front-loaded inventories, while ex-US markets are facing fierce competition from Chinese players. We believe that the muted US demand faced by Malaysian manufacturers may also be linked to transhipment activities by Chinese peers, who rerouted shipments through Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam, before exporting to the US. This is evidenced by the rising market share and imported customs values from these countries, even as total US customs values for imported medical and surgical rubber gloves during March-April 2025 remained comparable to the front-loading period in October-November 2024. For pricing, glove makers have indicated the average selling point (ASP) for generic medical examination rubber gloves will remain in a downtrend due to lower raw material prices and ongoing fierce competition domestically and regionally. Based on our channel checks, there will be about 5-8 bil pcs/annum coming online in Vietnam and c.5bn pcs/annum in Indonesia by end-2025. In addition, we estimated that Intco will add 10 bil pcs/annum from China itself in 2025. On a positive note, there remains potential for a gradual demand shift among US buyers from vinyl gloves to nitrile rubber gloves should the ongoing 90-day tariff negotiations between the US and China end unfavourably. This substitution effect, estimated at an additional 28-38 bil pcs/annum, could help absorb the incoming supply from Intco's expanded capacity, thereby supporting the path toward restoring supply-demand equilibrium by 2026, based on our view. —July 21, 2025 Main image: Reuters
