Tribal heroes honoured on Hul Diwas

Ranchi: Hul Diwas was solemnly observed across Ranchi on Monday to commemorate the valiant tribal uprising of 1855 led by Sido and Kanhu Murmu.
While chief minister Hemant Soren paid floral tributes at Jharkhand Bhavan in New Delhi alongside his wife and Gandey MLA Kalpana, district and police officials in Ranchi honoured the tribal freedom fighters.
"Sido-Kanhu were the torch-bearers of resistance against colonial injustice. Their courage gave a new direction to the freedom struggle, long before 1857," said Hemant in Delhi.
"Hul was not just a revolt, it was a call for dignity, land, and identity. Today, we remember them not as martyrs of the past, but as symbols of ongoing justice for tribal communities," Soren added.
In Ranchi, deputy commissioner Manjunath Bhajantri, along with senior superintendent of police Chandan Sinha, paid floral tribute at the Sido-Kanhu statue erected at the Sido-Kanhu Park, Kanke Road.
"Hul reminds us that justice and rights must be fought for with courage. Sido-Kanhu and other tribal leaders' sacrifice continues to inspire us to build an inclusive, equitable society," said Bhajantri.
"Hul was a fight not only for land, but for dignity and rights. The courage Sido-Kanhu showed in mobilising 10,000 Santhals against the British is an inspiration even today. Understanding our roots helps build a more just future," said Sinha.
Members of the adivasi community, many dressed in traditional attire, gathered at the park.
"Hul Diwas is sacred to us. Our ancestors stood up against injustice that gives us strength even today," said Premshahi Munda, a tribal leader.
Birhu Tudu, a resident from Kanke, said, "We hope the govt ensures our youth know this history. Hul was Jharkhand's history, and it should be preserved forever."
As Jharkhand marked the day with solemn remembrance, the legacy of Sido and Kanhu continues to resonate in the voices of those still striving for equality and recognition.

‘Heads of State' movie review: Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Idris Elba, and John Cena go all out to save the world (and partly succeed)
In Heads of State, Priyanka Chopra, Idris Elba, and John Cena do everything but provide an escape from the current geopolitical headwinds. So, if you are looking for respite, look elsewhere. In fact, they put you square in the middle of a fragile international order being puppeteered by an American President Will Derringer (John Cena), with a penchant for acting in films, and a British Prime Minister Sam Clarke (Idris Elba), who runs at midnight in the streets of London donning Arsenal merchandise. The film opens with Noel Basset (Priyanka Chopra Jonas), a tough MI6 agent, leading a covert operation in the middle of Spain's Tomatina festival. However, things quickly go sideways when her team is sabotaged, and we are led to believe that she has died. On the other hand, in the land of the free, President Derringer and Prime Minister Clarke's hostility only grows. After fumbling a press conference, a staff member suggests that they travel on the same flight and make amends during the journey. And obviously, a Russian is going to swoop in to upend their plans — Air Force One is attacked by Viktor Gradov (Paddy Considine), a Russian-born arms dealer turned extremist, and the two gentlemen quickly find themselves stranded in a Belarusian forest. The duo must devise a plan to get out of the woods and reach the NATO conference in Italy in time for an important vote, all while being chased by Gradov's ruthless killers. Heads of State (English) Director: Ilya Naishuller Cast: Idris Elba, John Cena, Priyanka Chopra, Paddy Considine, Sarah Niles, Jack Quaid Runtime: 116 minutes Storyline: When Air Force One gets shot down over enemy territory, the President of the USA and the Prime Minister of the UK find themselves on the run and working together to thwart a global conspiracy. Watching Cena and Elba crawl their way back to civilisation with their larger-than-life personalities in full display makes for an entertaining watch. The sequence featuring the President and the Prime Minister crouched in a truck transporting livestock, with Hang Me, Oh Hang Me playing in the background, is one for the ages. The leads' slick action sequences cushioned by the acting chops of the supporting cast ground this movie. Basset's partly funny puns and surprising comeback midway through the film, Derringer's heart-breaking honesty, and Clarke's hard shell that eventually cracks help steer the movie to its shore. A special mention to the restrained Sarah Niles, as the top aide to the President, and Jack Quaid, the CIA safe house watchman, who brings brevity to the frame. However, by robbing the audience of a chance to experience this high-octane thriller in theatres, Amazon Studios is doing a big disservice to the craft of action movies. There is more than enough fun and frivolity in this summer movie, but its nonchalance (or wilful ignorance?) concerning the current global order left me feeling uncomfortable; it somehow manages to walk a tight rope of self-aware satire and fantastical politicking. Championing NATO as 'friends who stand up to a bully' is disingenuous and makes one sad at the thought of another movie from the West working as a propaganda vehicle. Ilya Naishuller's 120-minute-long film, in the end, feels like an attempt to whitewash the international groups and organisations that have caused instability across the developing world. Trump boasts effectiveness of airstrikes on Iranian sites, says they pushed Tehran to talks
Washington, July 4 (UNI) US President Donald Trump, boasting the effectiveness of the US military's airstrikes on June 22 on Iranian nuclear sites said today that Washington's attacks on Iran had effectively ended the hostile rhetoric being peddled from Tehran, pushing the country towards talks. "We just did a really great job. And then, of course, you cap it off with the hit, the perfect hit in Iran, where they were talking awfully badly, you know, death to America, death to Israel. They were talking awfully badly," Trump said at a rally in Des Moines, Iowa, reports Iran International. "They're not talking badly anymore, to be honest with you. And we might even meet with them and see," he added. "They want to meet, they want to meet, and we'll see if we can do something. But they want to meet. I think they want to meet very badly." Earlier in the day, Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews that "Iran does want to speak. And I think they'd like to speak to me. And it's time that they do. "We're not looking to hurt them. We're looking to let them be a country again. They got beat up and, you know, they were they were both exhausted, frankly. But Iran really got beat up. And I think they want to meet. I mean, I know they want to meet. And if it's necessary, I'll do it." Trump made the remarks after his phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where the two sides discussed Iran and Ukraine, though not much settlement has been made on that issue, Trump said later. Modi announces OCI cards for 6th generation of Indian diaspora in T&T
Port of Spain/New Delhi, July 4 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards will be issued to citizens of Indian origin in Trinidad and Tobago, extending up to the sixth generation. This move will allow them to live and work in India without restrictions. PM Modi lauded the Indian diaspora for their resilience, cultural richness, and significant contributions to Trinidad & Tobago. He also acknowledged the community's continued efforts to preserve Indian cultural traditions. To further strengthen these bonds, Prime Minister announced that OCI cards would now be issued to the 6th generation of the people of Indian origin people of Trinidad & Tobago. This special gesture was greeted with loud applause. Prime Minister also underscored that the Government of India would be supporting several initiatives to nurture the 'Girmitiya' legacy. Girmitiya was the name given those Indians who left the country in the middle and 19th century to serve as labour in the then British colonies "Our decision on the sixth generation of the Indian diaspora in Trinidad & Tobago being issued OCI cards will strengthen their connection to India and preserve our shared heritage for future generations," PM Modi said. Addressing the Indian community in Port of Spain during his first visit to the Caribbean country as Prime Minister, PM Modi underlined the deep emotional and cultural ties that bind India with its diaspora. "Today, I'm happy to announce that the OCI cards will be given to the sixth generation of the Indian diaspora in Trinidad and Tobago. We aren't just connected by blood or surname. You are connected by belonging. India welcomes, and India embraces you!" PM Modi said. PM Modi called upon the people of Indian origin to visit their ancestral land and deepen their connection and roots with India and not just be connected virtually via social media. "I encourage all of you to visit India more in person, and not just virtually via social media. Visit the villages of your ancestors. Walk the soil they walked on. Bring your children and neighbours. Bring anyone who enjoys 'Chai' and a good story. We will welcome all of you with open arms, warm hearts and Jalebi," he said. PM Modi also congratulated Trinidad and Tobago for becoming the first country in the region to adopt India's Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system. "I congratulate Trinidad and Tobago for being the first country in the region to adopt UPI. Now, sending money will be as easy as sending a Good Morning text message. I promise it will be faster than the bowling of the West Indies," he said. Highlighting India's rapid growth, PM Modi said the country has emerged as the fastest-growing major economy and has successfully lifted millions out of poverty. "India is the fastest-growing major economy in the world. Soon, we will be among the top three economies of the world. The fruits of India's growth and progress are reaching the most needy. India has proved that we can defeat poverty by empowering the poor... The World Bank has noted that India has lifted over 250 million people above extreme poverty in the last decade. Prime Minister stressed, "National Missions on AI, Semiconductor and Quantum Computing were becoming new engines of the country's growth. Underlining the success of UPI based digital payments in India, he expressed optimism that its adoption in Trinidad & Tobago would be equally encouraging. Reflecting on India's age-old philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam , meaning the world is one family, vividly demonstrated during the Covid pandemic, he offered continued support to T&T in its pursuit of progress and nation making."
