Tomás Romero picks up second victory in three starts and New York City FC beats Toronto FC 3-1
New York City (9–7–4) moved into sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 31 points. Wolf opened the scoring in the 20th minute with his team-leading ninth goal of the season. His side-volley shot went off the far post and redirected off the other post into the net for a 1–0 lead. It was just the seventh first-half goal this season for NYCFC, which entered lowest in the league in that category. Mitja Ilenic made it 2–0 in the 49th with his second goal of the season. Agustín Ojeda dribbled into the area for a cross that deflected off Ilenic inside the far post.
Toronto (4–11–5) cut its deficit to 2–1 in the 70th on an own goal. Theo Corbeanu got past his defender along the right sideline and got to the endline for a cross that went off defender Justin Haak and Romero's arm into the net. But four minutes later Kevin O'Toole scored his first goal since March 9, 2024, off a great pass by Wolf. Toronto, which entered with just 25 goals allowed this season, was looking for its first road victory against New York City since September 2020.

Caitlin Clark's Injury Woes Continue, Misses Second Straight Game Against New York
Caitlin Clark missed her second straight game against New York on Tuesday while recovering from an injury to her right groin. The Fever's star guard also was absent from the team's game against the Liberty before the All-Star break. She was supposed to compete in the 3-point contest as well as Saturday's All-Star Game but missed both events. Clark told reporters on Saturday night that she had been getting treatment during the festivities which took place in Indianapolis. She was injured in the final minute of last Tuesday's victory at Connecticut. Clark went to see a doctor in New York according to Fever coach Stephanie White. White said she hadn't talked to the trainers between shootaround and the game to get an update on how the doctor's appointment went. Barclays Center was full of fans many of whom wore Clark's No. 22 jerseys. The second-year player missed 10 games during the first half of the season with three different muscle injuries. Clark never missed a game because of injury during her college career at Iowa or last season when she was selected the WNBA's Rookie of the Year. The two-time All-Star is averaging 16.5 points, 8.8 assists and 5.0 rebounds this season for a team that was expected to contend for a league championship. However, Clark's injuries and other obstacles have kept the Fever hovering near the middle of the standings with a 12-11 mark. 'These soft tissue injuries sometimes nag until you can actually have time to really allow to heal in the offseason,' White said.

Mets activate Starling Marte from injured list
The New York Mets reinstated designated hitter Starling Marte from the 10-day injured list Tuesday. Marte was available off the bench against the Los Angeles Angels. The 36-year-old veteran outfielder had been sidelined since July 7 with a bruised right knee. He was hitting .270 with four home runs, 20 runs batted in, and a .739 on-base plus slugging percentage in 58 games. In other roster moves, the Mets optioned designated hitter Jared Young and reliever Kevin Herget to Triple-A Syracuse following Monday night's 7-5 victory over the Angels. Right-hander Chris Devenski was designated for assignment. In their place, right-hander Justin Garza was recalled from Syracuse, and Rico Garcia was added to the bullpen after reporting to the major league club. Garcia pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings of one-hit ball over two relief appearances for the Mets earlier this month. He was claimed off waivers by the crosstown-rival New York Yankees and had one shaky outing for them last Friday in Atlanta before the Mets claimed him off waivers again Monday. New York also announced that left-hander Brandon Waddell's optional assignment to Syracuse was reversed, and he was placed on the 15-day injured list (effective July 19) with a right hip impingement. Waddell slipped on the mound during his most recent appearance last Friday against Cincinnati. He got through the rest of his outing and seemed to be OK, but then his hip worsened in the days that followed, manager Carlos Mendoza said. Waddell became the 11th pitcher on the Mets' injured list.

Giants sign safety k'von wallace on the eve of the 1st practice of training camp
The New York Giants added some secondary depth on the eve of the first practice of training camp by signing safety KVon Wallace. Wallace, who attended minicamp in June on a tryout basis, posted to social media a photo Tuesday of him signing a contract, and the team announced the deal not long after. It was not immediately clear what the corresponding roster move would be to add Wallace. The soon-to-be 28-year-old missed the second half of last season after injuring his right ankle Nov. 3 in Seattle's overtime loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He made 15 tackles and forced a fumble during his nine games with the Seahawks before landing on injured reserve. Wallace is expected to compete for a reserve spot behind starters Jevon Holland and Tyler Nubin and could contribute on special teams. A fourth-round pick by Philadelphia in 2020 out of Clemson, Wallace spent his first three NFL seasons with the Eagles and has also played for Arizona and Tennessee. He has appeared in 75 regular-season and playoff games, starting 19 of them.
